During my lifetime; capital punishment has been abolished, homosexuality between consenting adults is not longer a crime, women are now paid as much as men for the same job, corporal punishment in schools has be outlawed, rape within marriage is now a crime, racial discrimination is no longer allowed by law. We still have a way to go but in many ways, but not all, things are getting better.

My parents were actively involved in WWII and they never had a heating allowance or a free bus pass. The 1950s and 1960s saw mass destruction of many fine buildings in the name of progress and swathes of countryside were concreted over and built on. Cruelty to animals has always been with us in various forms.

I am not saying everything is rosy, it clearly isn't. I'm just say- ing it is not all bad.
