Not sure of the exact area, but wonder about the 80+ years lady Ben Fogle visited in his programme 'New lives in the Wild'. Think she had been lucky to escape bad flooding in the past.

I think she's much further north, wasn't she north of Cairns?
They are more subject to cyclones up there than Brisbane, though.

DD was without power but safe, although the phone connection was terrible.

My niece and her family are in Caloundra, near Brisbane. Good to hear that it has now been downgraded Nanna8.

I have family in Queensland I just hope they are all safe. I’ve seen the devastation first hand these terrible weather events can do. We were in Florida a few years ago when a hurricane can was making its way and the panic at the airport was unbelievable, we were flying to New York to meet up with two of of AC’s and whilst in the queue at the check-in desk people were coming up to to try and buy our plane tickets. My DB’s house which is on the beach south of Daytona was badly damaged when the storm hit.

Family just emigrated to Brisbane and no power for 12 hours, high winds, lots of rain and school closed but they are safe👍

There has been a lot of trees down, powerlines down and lots of electricity loss but no huge major damage. It has now been downgraded, awful mess but not as bad as they thought it would be. Thank goodness.

All safely evacuated to friends here - plus dogs, fish, chickens ....

Still waiting, too, Allira.

Yes, DD has gone to stay with friends as there is a creek behind her house. She sounds very well-prepared.

I think it's been downgraded but could still cause extensive damage.

Tracker map of Alfred.
Sadly no photo facility yet😡.

Whereabouts are you, nanna8? Can you say?

All public transport and most schools closed round there now. We haven’t had one like this for 50 years. There was a 15 metre wave in South Queensland. Unimaginable. 500 kms region, pretty huge.

This is so far predicted to be Category 2

My GD is in Brisbane and about to get her first experience of a cyclone. She is in a first floor apartment and isn't sure what to expect. I hope she and everyone else in the area will be fine.

Thinking of those expecting this highly damaging weather system, and those worrying about loved ones from afar.

After extensive flooding, DS opened up the attic so the whole of the house under the roof is now habitable.
They have a brook running behind the house, all very wildlife-y, but no consolation when flood waters set in.

Allira Wed 05-Mar-25 10:49:37

DD is in Brisbane too. It was the persistent damp afterwards which caused the problems even for those who weren't completely flooded out.

ixion Wed 05-Mar-25 09:58:25

DS in Brisbane has spent 3 days moving as much as possible into their attic.
He says it's not the winds so much as the potential for flooding - again😢.

Living in my country is scary
My mother was scared of spiders, the sea and a number of other things found in Aussie, so no amount of persuading by my Father would encourage her to emigrate. He had a fantastic career lined up too. Us kids would have loved it.

Thinking of your family and friends nanna8 🤞

Aveline Mon 03-Mar-25 12:38:52

Oh dear. A friend is off to Australia for a wedding this week. It's somewhere north of Brisbane. Hope all is OK after all.

nanna8 Mon 03-Mar-25 12:36:26

Not us so much as we are further south but we have friends and family up there. Waves are already affecting the coastline. Horrible. Thanks for good wishes for us.

Indigo8 Mon 03-Mar-25 12:29:40

Hold tight nanna8 and hope for the best. I will cross my fingers for you.

crazyH Mon 03-Mar-25 12:20:49

Stay safe nanna8 - I have experienced one or two , growing up in India.

This cyclone is reaching much further south than they usually do, into New South Wales and Brisbane . Just hoping and praying that it weakens before tomorrow when it is due to hit. The Far North gets cyclones most years but we haven’t had one this far south for decades. Sometimes living in my country is scary.
