Any more than 25 December is Santa Claus Day, that movable date in March/April,Chocolate Egg Day or Hot Cross Bun month.
It’s Shrove Tuesday

As long as they don’t call it ‘Jif Lemon Day’

Hear, hear, RosieandherMaw.

I despair of that Chocolate Egg day, the December Festival called all sorts llike "Winterval"....

I also have a particularl loathing for Mother's Day, which it isn't, it's Mothering Sunday!

Well, I might buy a lemon today in case the urge to make pancakes overwhelms me. Whatever the history of them, they are yummy.

Pancake day = lemon and sugar (sometimes oranges) …sometimes a new pan

Usually as a pudding after dinner-dins.
Either way, yum!

A really old, seasoned pan is best!

I'm going to try making them in the liquidiser today as the kitchen isn't quite sorted out yet. 🤞

I suppose really. Shrove Tuesday is a Christian day of repentance.

Pancake day is associated with the agricultural year and the beginning of spring.

They just coincide😄😄

It's nicknamed Pancake Day, aka Mardi Gras as Indigo8 said, so we could fill up on pancakes before the austerity of Lent. That's a fairly modern concept too.

We're supposed to go to confession on Shrove Tuesday.

Pancakes with bacon shock that is so wrong in my world! Lemon and sugar in this house.

The savoury ones need to be made with buckwheat flour. It's tricky to work with because it is flimsier and tears more easily when tossed, but the taste is better with ham, cheese, etc.
I like one of each, a savoury to start and a sweet to follow.

I didn’t know, lost track.

I used up all the eggs in an omelet last night 😬

And before you waffle about Lent etc, bear in mind that Easter was pinched from other religions, so I have no trouble “pinching” pancake day from Christian’s,

That is debatable.

Eostre (Ostara) was a Germanic pagan goddess but the idea that the festival around the Spring Equinox is named after her by early Christians in other countries surely cannot be correct.
It may be the name Easter was mistranslated in early translations of the Bible into English and so the name caught on but later translations of the Bible don't use that word. .

Of course Easter is a Christian festival, the most important one in the Christian calendar.

Call it what you will but
When life gives you lemons - make pancakes. 🥞

If you’re a Christian it’s Shrove Tuesday, if you aren’t, it’s Pancake Day. Live and let live.

Shrove Tuesday or pancake day doesn’t bother me pancakes will be made!

Oldbat1 Tue 04-Mar-25 10:03:00

What is in a name I ask? To me yet another day which is printed into the wall calendar. Ive never understood the point of Lent - yes to volunteering to help those who need assistance but a pointless exercise otherwise. Who/What does giving up eg chocolate help exactly???

Indigo8 Tue 04-Mar-25 10:02:04

I believe that many Christian countries call it Mardi Gras (fat Tuesday) and have colourful parades.

We have two GC here after school, pancakes will be made.

I know it’s Shrove Tuesday, I am laying in bed trying to work out what I am giving up for lent.

DH suggested we give up chocolate. As we rarely eat it then that's not much sacrifice.
Now, give up 🍷 or perhaps give up cleaning for Lent 🤔

Witzend Tue 04-Mar-25 09:53:36

It’s pancake day around 3 times a week in DD’s house. When I’m there I always make them for Gdcs’ breakfast - for the 3 of them I have a production line going.
Nutella is the favourite, but that’s weekends only. Often it’s sliced banana with lemon or honey.

My own favourite is just lemon and a little caster sugar. Or if I’m pushing the boat out for me and dh, my version of Crêpes Suzette. 😋

Shrove Tuesday, pancake day! I hadn't realised!
I am under prepared. I have one egg, very little milk, and for today's dinner I have planned a beef stew.
I'm afraid my pancakes will have to wait until another day.

Ouch!

So what other religion was the resurrection of Christ taken from?

You are astonishingly rude at times.

Don’t be silly, I was simply teasing rosieandhermaw I’m sure she is mature enough to know that.

What religions? Well it was almost certainly built on the old pagan celebrations of renewal, birth and fertility. One of the goddesses was Eostre, who was often pictured with eggs and rabbits. Rather charming I think.

You also said in another thread this week that Easter was plagiarised by the Christians.

I wink emoji and I may have believed you.

I know it's Shrove Tuesday

But it's always Pancake Day in my world

mum2three Tue 04-Mar-25 09:35:33

So long as people understand the reason behind it, I see no problem with calling it Pancake Day. It should be the start of Lent, when people practise austerity. Children should be taught all this, as we were, instead of thinking in terms of pancakes and Easter eggs.

crazyH Tue 04-Mar-25 09:35:07

During the school run days , I always made pancakes on pancake day. Oh I miss those days - they are now 22 and 23 years old .

Remember 📺 advert? Don't forget the pancakes on jif 🍋 day!

We lived in Cyprus for three years, and Monday (yesterday) was Green Monday. It is a public holiday when families like to gather outside in the countryside, enjoy picnics and good food to begin their Lent and the beginning of spring.
We always used to try and go out for the day too, perhaps to a coastal restaurant and enjoy a nice lunch and have a walk along the beach.
Then today would be Mardi Gras, with a carnival procession in Limassol where we lived.

Yes, I will be making pancakes today!

Jaxjacky Tue 04-Mar-25 08:52:23

Pancake Day here, that’s what my Mum called it and she was a church goer, I think tomorrow I have to find a twig from an Ash tree and shove it down my sock.
