Any more than 25 December is Santa Claus Day, that movable date in March/April,Chocolate Egg Day or Hot Cross Bun month.
It’s Shrove Tuesday

First and foremost it's Shrove Tuesday, aka Pancake Day.

And before you waffle about Lent etc, bear in mind that Easter was pinched from other religions, so I have no trouble “pinching” pancake day from Christian’s,

Ouch!

So what other religion was the resurrection of Christ taken from?

You are astonishingly rude at times.

The pun obviously soared over your head.

😄😄 yes, the clue was in “waffle”

What a ridiculous thread. Playground stuff from grannies! It is Shrove Tuesday but if some want to call it pancake day so what.

Churchview Tue 04-Mar-25 08:42:18

I read the thread title and thought I'd got the date wrong and had just served up plates of pancakes a week early.

Each to their own, in our house it’s Shrove Tuesday AND Pancake Day! Yom Yom grin

keepingquiet Tue 04-Mar-25 08:34:29

Pancake day is only of historical significance. It was the way to use up eggs and milk before the forty day Lenten fast. As few people give up eggs and milk for forty days anyway it really has no significance any more.
Shrove Tuesday (its English name) is the day most people went to be be 'shriven' or to confession to be forgiven of their sins before the holy season began. This practice too, has fallen into disuse so other than making money for supermarkets with their pancake day offers, there isn't much tradition left in it.
I won't be making pancakes today.

Its Shrove Tuesday , unlike most of Central Europe this week is seen as Carnival in places like Germany, Netherlands and Belgium, fun fairs are the norm , Monday is known as Rosenmontag in Germany.

But it’s Pancake Day on the Good Morning thread! 😂

Don’t be silly, I was simply teasing rosieandhermaw I’m sure she is mature enough to know that.

What religions? Well it was almost certainly built on the old pagan celebrations of renewal, birth and fertility. One of the goddesses was Eostre, who was often pictured with eggs and rabbits. Rather charming I think.

I am partial to a well made waffle, with fresh strawberries and cream 🧇🍓

A waffle is just a tartan pancake.

👏. Well said!

That amused me as much as the daftness of people using Before Common Era instead of BC with dates because they hate any reference to Christianity so much! So the birth of Jesus is still their starting point - you couldn’t make it up could you!

ViceVersa Tue 04-Mar-25 08:03:07

It's always been Pancake Day in this house!

I have no intention of waffling on this or any other topic and resent that.

I like the name Fat Tuesday, mardi gras, because it doesn't limit me. Just eat as many indulgences as you like by smothering the pancakes in whippy cream or chocolate sauce. 😋

MrsSquirrel Tue 04-Mar-25 07:51:02

Maybe it's not Pancake Day for you Rosie but it is for me. We don't all have to have the same holidays.

Oh no! Please don't remind me this early in the day, I'm only just on my first cup of delicious earl grey lol.
I hate making pancakes, not that keen on eating them either but DH loves them with bacon and maple syrup, so that's dinner tonight. Thankfully it's only one day a year
For all those who will be making/eating pancakes today whether it's for Shrove Tuesday or just because you want to Enjoy
😋

GrannyGravy13 Tue 04-Mar-25 07:46:50

We have two GC here after school, pancakes will be made.

I know it’s Shrove Tuesday, I am laying in bed trying to work out what I am giving up for lent.

The day still has a name though or do you get round saying Christmas or Easter??

Whitewavemark2 Tue 04-Mar-25 07:39:24

It is in our house as we aren’t Christian’s.
