I’m tired of wearing thick winter clothes.

I’m counting the days until I can wear some lighter summer clothing. Even when it is sunny it’s still cold and I live in the south of the U.K.

What about you?

Surely, even in the south of England, March is far to early to discard winter clothes?

Here it is at any rate, summer clothes, if worn at all, are worn from May to the end of August.

I really dislike the cold and love to be cosy in warm jumpers and the obligatory vest!

My old Nan used to say " never cast a clout until May is out". I can't say I always stick to that but my winter clothes will remain out until the temp gets much higher.

We're going to Shetland in May and I have absolutely no idea what the weather is like there. I'll probably end up packing thermals and tee shirts!

I can't wait to wear my comfy sandals no socks or tights and a nice cotton dress I don't enjoy winter

Ziggy62 Mon 17-Mar-25 09:23:16

I went shopping on Saturday and for the first time this year didn't need my coat, I was wearing long sleeved t-shirt, jumper and scarf with jeans but it was lovely to leave coat at home

mum2three Mon 17-Mar-25 09:15:13

I feel rather ill when it gets hot, but I do appreciate being able to dress in just a cotton dress or t-shirt.

I borrowed my daughter's quilted coat to walk her dog, it was featherlight, warm and so comfortable, so much better than mine. I've decided to ditch some of my winterwear and invest in something new. I need warmth without weight!

vegansrock

Winter- jeans, long sleeved t shirt, jumper.
Summer- jeans, short sleeved t shirt, jumper.

Similar vegansrock apart from thermals in winter and if really warm, shorts in summer.

I just had a very nice weekend socialising.
I'd bought a couple of nice dresses for both occasions and was far too cold to wear them . .

I can't wait to feel warm. This winter has seemed endless. Just seen on GMB it's going to get to 19 degrees by Thursday. I'm a layers girl, really feel the cold so let's hope we'll have some sun soon.

Never cast a clout till May is out and all that

I have always understood that saying relates to Hawthorn also known as May Blossom, which flowers at the beginning of May, middle of May further North.
I remember, in the 1960's a friend's baby wrapped up in woolen clothes and covered in blankets. The baby was red in the face from being overheated on a hot day in May. When I mentioned to my friend that her baby seemed to be too hot she said her mother in law insisted she keep the baby wrapped up., stating 'Never cast a clout till May is out'.

I love cosy winter clothes and rather dread finding something nice and flattering for summer. I hate heat.

Georgesgran Mon 17-Mar-25 08:28:29

I prefer Autumn/Winter clothes too - hides the flab, but so looking forward to a bit of warmth. Here in the North East, we’re a hardy bunch, but enough is enough now! Howay the sun!

Babs03 Mon 17-Mar-25 08:17:04

I don’t mind wearing jumpers but it is all faff of getting out of the house, I am the same as an earlier poster, we have a narrow hallway so getting adults dressed for outside then toddlers who don’t want to wear a coat to start with, is a nightmare. So much to put on and then take off when we return. Can’t wait to just wear a light jacket or cardi to go out.

HelterSkelter1 Mon 17-Mar-25 07:54:07

I can't wait to get out the cut off/capri pants which is my summer uniform. And white trainers/plimsolls. I will need sunglàsses every day in the bright sun this week, but really want to leave off the thermal leggings and long sleeved vest under jeans and sweater. But I think they will be close at hand till April.
I do find a scarf round my neck keeps the rest of me warm as I don't like roll necks. I like the Seasalt handybands and often wear one on top of the other. I know that's a bit like a roll neck, but I get claustrophobic in a roll neck!! I can take a handyband off easily when I warm up.

Just quietly, the extreme hot weather we have had here recently is not nice at all. It is hard to sleep, it is hard to do anything outside without feeling exhausted ,dehydrated and your food goes off in an hour if you leave it out. Plus is that clothes dry in less than an hour I suppose. Anyway, it has gone a lot cooler now thank goodness.

BlueBelle Mon 17-Mar-25 07:15:57

Still got my thermals on

Astitchintime Mon 17-Mar-25 06:40:12

I won't stop wearing a camisole until May - cannot tolerate having cold back. Plus, I prefer layers too as I don't like turtle or polo neck tops although I do like a pretty scarf and even the finer ones are lovely and warm.

RosesandLilac Mon 17-Mar-25 05:49:01

I try to go with the flow of the seasons nowadays, I accept that the temperature fluctuates and I really don’t like hot weather, it drains me.
I love being outside so wearing layers is normal for me, I’m happy in jeans, jumpers, fleece tops whatever, so long as I don’t get wet knees I’m fine!🙂

Sallyforth Mon 17-Mar-25 05:40:58

I fear I may have to have my polo neck sweaters surgically removed. I find if my neck's warm I feel warm all over.

karmalady Mon 17-Mar-25 05:40:50

Indoors, tights, short sleeves and a dress made from heavy linen, cardi on hand which I did not use. The sun makes the house warm, first from the east windows and french doors and then from the west

I went out into the back garden and it was freezing cold in the breeze, I would have worn the full layered works if I had gone to my allotment

It will be dull out today so I will be back into wearing short sleeved silk vest, hand made old merino jumper, warm skirt and tights. This is almost my winter wear

I love the pops of sun in march, got to take advantage because sometimes this is the best indoor sun of the year, perfect for being cosy with a good book, while sitting by a sunny window

I am not fed up of being wrapped up, luckily we don`t have sudden transitions in the UK but I do remember very cold days in mid summer, on holiday when we did not pack enough jumpers

vegansrock Mon 17-Mar-25 05:19:41

Winter- jeans, long sleeved t shirt, jumper.
Summer- jeans, short sleeved t shirt, jumper.

escaped Mon 17-Mar-25 03:42:12

I agree, TwiceAsNice, that it's difficult deciding what to pack for a holiday in the next few weeks. I'm dreading how cold it might be, I really didn't want to be wearing thick woollies!
You made me laugh TaichiNan getting your washed winter jumpers back out again!

Whitewavemark2 Mon 17-Mar-25 02:46:25

I have a sort of between set of clothes that I wear spring and autumn. So my thick heavy sweaters, lined trousers and knitted dresses are all cleaned and stored now. I am now wearing lighter weight sweaters etc. But in all honesty it has been so unpleasantly cold these last few days, there is no pleasure in gardening etc. The weather app, tells me it is 10c, but it feels more like 2c!

Looking at the bbc weather app for the next fortnight, the day temperature is 10c, but the night temperature is staying above freezing so that is an improvement.

Deedaa Sun 16-Mar-25 23:28:06

I have got some really nice summer clothes, and all my winter stuff seems so dreary. I shall be so pleased when I can pack it all away again.
