Toothpaste?!!

I'm keen to look after my teeth and have a good electric toothbrush and floss etc . My problem is toothpaste. It used to be quite simple. I like Oral B. Now, however, there's all sorts of Oral Bs. I've looked beyond that and become completely flummoxed. There is just so much choice. Is a toothpaste costing £10 a tube so much better than one costing £1.50? What's more important, whitening, enamel and cavity protection, fresh breath etc etc etc.
I asked the dentist and he was very vague saying Colgate but there's all sorts of Colgate too.
Any ideas or suggestions welcome.

Do you like fennel?
I used to like Toms.

I think I’ll try a children’s toothpaste, perhaps they don’t taste so awful as adult ones.

As far as I know, it doesn’t really matter, so long as you floss

I go for a kids’ boots own brand one as it has lower fluoride, and doesn’t irritate my mouth with ‘extra minty freshness’, and doesn’t have silica oxide in it.

I prefer to use Colgate Total Care and usually buy two or three tubes when they are on offer. I have OralB electric tooth brush and head should be changed every three months. I do not put water on to brush before brushing and do not rinse out after, just spit out. My teeth are tight together so I have to use fine inter-dent brush to clean in between before brushing.

I use Colgate plaque removal and deep clean. At one time it was just toothpaste but there are so many different types now and the price has risen a lot. I tend to bulk buy when there are offers on.
GD has a problem with the peppermint flavour of toothpaste and her mum has to seek out other flavours.

My dog prefers the poultry-flavoured toothpaste.

Be careful about using Corsodyl. It contains chemicals that can cause allergic reactions.

I was recommended to use Corsodyl mouth wash on one side of my mouth only, thankfully, after having an implant. That side of my face became very swollen with a huge bruise along my jaw line, where the remnants of the Corsodyl pooled despite spitting it out.

An acquaintance saw me like that - and thought I had suffered domestic violence! An appalling misjudgment of my DH, who has never been prone to violence. I had to show her the stitches and new tooth to prove her wrong.

I alternate between Corsodyl and Sensodyne. As has been stated earlier, Corsodyl takes a bit of getting used to but my teeth feel really clean when I use it. I do have really sensitive teeth ( check ups are a nightmare; proper Marathon Man stuff) and wonder how Sensodyne works because it’s so effective. I’ve had to stop buying their toothbrushes though, as they’ve changed the shape and they hurt my gums.

I have the sensitive tooth paste from Aldi. It has the usual amount of fluoride and does well for my teeth. I do brush and spit. It seems to work fine.

I hate the tastes of mint and artificial sweeteners. I use the tiniest possible amount and think it’s the brushing which matters not the toothpaste.

... if you have sensitivity you need one that actually works though!

I find that the Sensifoam Whitening toothpaste from Colgate works very well. But I know what you mean, sensitive teeth are a nightmare.

I use ASDA toothpaste, 50p a tube. I don’t believe all these added benefits work. Where is the proof!

Nannan2 Tue 01-Apr-25 00:20:54

Silverbrooks, our dental receptionist/manager is very mean with any sample tubes, you practically have to beg or prise them from her to get one, we would never get a few😆anybody would think she was buying you one herself out of her own salary the way she acts.

My dentist told me that as long as the toothpaste has fluoride then use it 80p supermarket own or £6.00 brand.

I have problems with toothpaste in that I detest peppermint but also have sensitive teeth. So my choices are very limited, but my dentist is happy with my teeth cleaningColgate Sensifoam whitening is a good toothpaste and tastes more like spearment than peppermint but it's not easy to find and a lot of shops don't stock it. All the extras that are available with cavity protection, fresh breath etc. are not even considered for me. By the way my dentist told me that I caused my sensitive teeth by using an electric toothbrush with a hard bristle and pressing too hard, these days I know modern brushes have a presure sensitivity built in but I now find they make my teeth feel like they are shaking my teeth out of the sockets.

I’m a hygienist and when patients ask which toothpaste is best , I say whatever you like the taste of, as long as it has fluoride .Own brands are just as good as named brands . It’s more important to spend money on your toothbrush than toothpaste and to use floss and interdental brushes.
For sensitive teeth I recommend sensordyne or Colgate sensitive .
Duraphat is the toothpaste on prescription only . As is Biomin which is recommended for dry mouth, especially post chemo .
If you suffer from ulcers , dry or burning mouth or lichen planus , use a toothpaste which is sodium lauryl sufphate free .
The whitening toothpastes don’t work . You need whitening treatments .

I was going to mention sodium laurel sulphate. I saw my doctor a few years ago because I kept getting blood blisters in my mouth and realised my toothpaste contained it. It’s in so many things.

It's not the toothpaste, it's what you do with it ie use it on toothbrush correctly. Unless you have any specific dental/allergy health issues that require a specific kind, clean your teeth regularly, use interdental brushes and try to attend dental surgeon at least once a year for check up.

I changed dentists recently. I love my coffee and as such end up with coffee stains on my teeth. I had asked previous dentists what toothpaste they recommended and never received a straight answer. I decided to ask this new dentist what toothpaste he recommended and used himself. He was very forthcoming and said the basic dark blue Oral B. Well I can honestly say I wish I would have started using this years ago!

kittylester Mon 31-Mar-25 20:31:13

That's totally wrong stillness - never rinse after brushing your teeth.

We use Kingfisher with fluoride. Kingfisher is sodium laurel sulphate free.

Thank you Tenko for sharing your expertise with us. Very kind of you and helpful. 👏

Toothpaste is just something you put on a toothbrush. It doesn't have magical properties. Adverts that say it does are lying.
