Meghan’s April Fool?

From The Tines this morning
Imagine if I told you I was giving you something “in keepsake packaging that you can repurpose to tuck away love notes or special treasures, and to remember this pivotal moment with me”. You would look at me strangely and ask if I should perhaps seek specialist medical help, and you would be right. And if I then told you that this keepsake packaging could be used as a “small bud vase for flowers on your nightstand or to hold pens on your desk”, could you guess what it was ?
A vintage piece of pretty china, say? Big reveal: it's a jam jar^

Whouda thunk?
Using an old jam jar for pencils? (Who uses pencils?)
Personally I put mine through the dishwasher and re use them for the next batch of raspberry jam -sorry, spread

There are a lot nicer things than empty jam jars to store things in but the I suppose having paid so much for the jar of jam you may as well make use of the empty jar!

Lots of uses above and I use Bonne Mamom jars for storing grapes from our vine in brandy and as drip catchers under radiator valves till they get fixed (or silt up).

Does Meghan have a sense of humour?

I put individual cheesecakes in mine: are cheesecakes a thing in California?

As the original home of The Cheesecake Factory chain of stores, the aforementioned dessert is most definitely a thing in California! grin It started up in Beverley Hills. Despite frequent visits to the US, I’ve never been to one, oddly enough.

That's reminded me that I used to buy crème brûlée in glass pots from M&S. I wonder if they still do them, I've still got my blow torch I used to caramelise the sugar topping. Eventually I'd have too many pots so they went into recycling after the charity shop didn't want any more.

Allira Wed 02-Apr-25 12:30:31

Most definitely.

I used to buy Bonne Maman? desserts which came in glass pots which were useful for all kinds of things afterwards.

When my children were young I used to have a ginger beer thing in a jam jar. I've forgotten exactly how it worked, but it meant we had a continuous supply of ginger beer. Did anyone else here have one?

Ginger beer plant. There are lots of recipes online. I’ve never done one but I know it can be absolutely explosive

Who'd have thought jam jars could be so useful?

I watched a documentary on consumer waste on Netflix..it states that those symbols are useless on plastic packaging. Half of it can’t be recycled so I now put it in the bin- for years I have put it through my dishwasher, now I find out it goes to landfill in china & other countries. I’ll only recycle tins & glass from now on.

When I was a-child I used to put caterpillars in jam jars, with some of their food plant. They would pupate and then emerge as beautiful butterflies, which I freed at once, of course.

Just my contribution to the Uses of Jam Jars thread 😀

I am surprised that Meghan hasn't thought of this. My goodness she could put a premium price on these 'Grow your own special butterfly and release to show your love of nature and care for the environent.

You could be onto a winner hereGrandma70s

I used to do the same.

You can get battery fairy lights that fit inside an empty jar. They are very pretty and popular on tables at weddings. Surprised Meghan didn’t come up with that use which would be nice on a bedside table sorry nightstand.

You could grow runner beans in jam jars too. Line jam jar with blotting paper, place in two or three broad beans, wet blotting paper, keep damp, place on a window sill and bean stalks fit for Jack will emerge!

I'm not sure what a nightstand is. I've heard of a 'one night stand'. Is it similar? 😀

😂😂😂

I went on a visit to a waste incinerator. The visit included a talk on recycling. We were told very firmly always to put the lids back on containers, even when they were made of different materials. Something to do with size and weight and where in the process they would be sperated.

Our council says to put lids separate to their containers,

It’s on their website, also in huge lettering on the side of their recycling lorries.

Why is the guidance different, I wonder? 🤷‍♀️

Same here, we have to remove tops from glass, and recycle the tops with plastic and metals.

Loving this thread.
Now, those fish paste jars would have made pretty bud vases.

I used to put primroses and daisies in them which I'd picked for my mother 🙂

My mum told me that when she was pregnant in the 1950’s she was told to have some empty fish paste jars to hand. I suppose that doesn’t have the ring of ‘keepsake packaging’ but they were useful to safely store a thermometer, apparently. grin

I’ll soon be digging our store of jam/marmalade jars out again - I need to make more apple chutney! Last September’s batch is nearly finished. But at least there are still plenty of UK apples in the shops.

I don’t have a ‘nightstand’ BTW. I do have a bedside chest, though.

Well, she says she’s a keen gardener Anniebach so who knows what she grows in the veggie patch?🤭

Ooooh, I remember a keen gardener , her mother walking around my friends garden asked what is that pointing at something in the garden ? friend said in panic ‘day scented stock’ 🫢
