Meghan’s April Fool?

From The Tines this morning
Imagine if I told you I was giving you something “in keepsake packaging that you can repurpose to tuck away love notes or special treasures, and to remember this pivotal moment with me”. You would look at me strangely and ask if I should perhaps seek specialist medical help, and you would be right. And if I then told you that this keepsake packaging could be used as a “small bud vase for flowers on your nightstand or to hold pens on your desk”, could you guess what it was ?
A vintage piece of pretty china, say? Big reveal: it's a jam jar^

Whouda thunk?
Using an old jam jar for pencils? (Who uses pencils?)
Personally I put mine through the dishwasher and re use them for the next batch of raspberry jam -sorry, spread

I’ve used pretty jam jars for years for all sorts of stuff and the Bonne Maman ones are great.Fill with favourite sweets and tie ribbon round them, grow herbs on the window sill from seeds in compost, fill with rubber bands or paperclips.I think now I need my own Netflix show, as I also could show how to cut up clean knickers once past their prime, for dusters, turn old socks into puppets to amuse tiny tots, cut down old wellies a bit and grow Spring bulbs in them. Where do I sign the contract?💰💰

All for people with more money than sense!

This could work with a jam jar?
Maybe a smaller pencil?

Well, she says she’s a keen gardener Anniebach so who knows what she grows in the veggie patch?🤭

Will they elevate ?
She’s already been elevated tho hasn’t she? Duchess of Los Angeles or something.Or did you mean the jam jar? Lord Jam Jar has a nice ring to it.😁

She certainly has been elevated that smile she is soooo high.

She's pulling the other one, surely?
These jamjars are aan identical shape to the ones I bought in Wilkos for my home-made jam, a dozen in carton, can't remember the price. Except they're much, much smaller. I couldn't keep all my love notes in one that size!

Sadly I don’t get love notes, but I could put my Tesco receipts in there.🤔

Be patriotic and buy British jam!

Agree. Even better grow your own and make the jam. If you can.

I use pencils and prefer them to pens.
I have various sorts from about 4H to 8B.
The ones that I take about with me in my bags are propelling ones so I don't need to carry a knife/pencil sharpener.

😁 NotSpaghetti exciting

If I put a jam jar of flowers on my nightstand, Peggy would be delighted….She’d drink it!

No but might levitate?

I use pencils, very sharp, for note-taking, along with a black gel pen and a pink highlighter. (me? Anal?)But they reside in a circular (cardboard ?) container with pictures from the Bayeux tapestry on the side. Jam jars are entirely the wrong shape: too wide and too short. And I don't eat jam, only marmalade.
Interested to know how much this amazing jam, sorry, spread, costs.

I'm afraid DD and I laughed for far too long about keepsake packaging! My nightstand is covered in books, no room even for a daisy. I fear my life just isn't meaningful enough.

I went on a visit to a waste incinerator. The visit included a talk on recycling. We were told very firmly always to put the lids back on containers, even when they were made of different materials. Something to do with size and weight and where in the process they would be sperated.

Our council says to put lids separate to their containers,

It’s on their website, also in huge lettering on the side of their recycling lorries.

Why is the guidance different, I wonder? 🤷‍♀️

I use pencils all the time, as I draw. They are usually in an old mug. But I keep all good looking jars….in case

But the jars aren't as nice as the Bonne Maman ones, which can be re-used for home-made preserves!

I keep my sea glass collection in mine! I’ve never thrown one out and have sometimes had to rescue one from recycling when my partner puts one with everything else.

I used to use Nutella jars as glasses when the children were little.

Still do! They are our everyday glasses.

My grandad stuck jam jar lids to the underside of a shelf in the shed. The jars stored nails, bits of string, all sorts of odds and ends. They unscrewed easily and contents could be seen at a glance. I think I’ve seen to gardeners do the same.

That is a good idea! I've seen people on YouTube make videos about doing that kind of thing.

I think ‘whatever’ is a better response to Madam Markle, and a more suitable name for her new business come to that!

Honestly though I don’t think enough people these days buy much jam and certainly not in sufficient quantities to make hers a viable business proposition.

Whoever earlier said she’s bonkers is spot on!

AuntieE Tue 01-Apr-25 16:28:39

People who draw use pencils - my late husband did at any rate.

I use a pencil when I trace sewing patterns,

And yes, I might well use a jam jar to keep them in.

So, I don't know why this strikes you as strange.

😂😂😂

Oh, silly me, are they cut crystal?

If so, don't put them in the dishwasher, folks!

mokryna Tue 01-Apr-25 16:19:42

She’s not talking about the run of the mill every day jam jars like Bonne Maman but ‘American Riviera Orchard to As ever’ jam jars, sillies.

Does Meghan not realise that people have been using empty jam jars for other purposes for a very long time. My dad used to soak paint brushes in jam jars. I used a jam jar for paper clips when I was working. My sister stored cotton wool balls in one.

They’re also handy in the greenhouse for storing plant labels and a Sharpie.
