I worked on the Chest Clinic in a big teaching hospital at 17 and that put me off smoking for life. So many really poorly people.

DH smoked when I met him and was hypnotised to help him stop and nearly 45 years later has never smoked again. They put him under along with a group of others to Stranger on the Shore by Acker Bilk 😂 but it worked for him!

I’m such an innocent petra! Much cheaper I expect and denying the government of tax…. The black market thrives if you’re in the know!

I think the majority of people who still smoke tailor made cigs are buying them from ^under the counter^in vape shops, Turkish barbers and the bloke down the road.

I remember my mum stopping by using ‘Nicobrevin’. - Jelly like capsules in a tin. Maybe mind over matter but she managed to give up. That said, my dad still enjoyed puffing on a King Edward cigar every night after we’d all eaten. He’d sit in ‘his’ armchair next to the fire, snip the end off the cigar and puf puff gently getting the cigar lit with a match.

Lovely memory of a gentle ex-Royal Navy man who died way too soon at the age of 47.

My son in law will be 50 this summer.

Well done Cumbrianmale56
I’ve never smoked, but I appreciate how hard the habit is to break, having watched family members go through it.

The most vile, stupid, selfish and ridiculous habit anyone ever takes up in the first place.

I think brands like Richmond sell for £15 a packet. It's still a very expensive habit if you have 20 a day.

FGT2 you prompted me to google for prices. The customer ahead of you was buying the most expensive brand at £18 a pack, s/he could save themselves a lot by going to the cheapest at just over £11 a pack. Still a very expensive way to burn money, so glad we stopped 19 years ago when the price was around £5 a pack. We both just threw away the remaining cigarettes and never smoked again (after a few earlier failed attempts over the years). I can't stand the smell now but am pleased not to be one of those reformed smokers who complains about the smell very loudly smile

I was behind someone in a shop and he bought 2 packs of 20 cigarettes and it was about £36. I nearly died.

Before I packed up my cigarettes went up to £2.40 a pack and I thought that was a lot. That would be about 2000. I joked with the shop assistant that I could not warrant paying that and she said “ you had better go on roll ups then”. She sold me a rolling machine, papers and a pouch of tobacco. I rolled my own until 2005 when I quit. The first few I rolled were so thin and tight that I could not suck in. 🤣🤣

Not really. You’d still only pay £7k out of your bank.?

Tizliz Fri 18-Apr-25 11:43:06

And you have paid tax on that money so giving up would be like a £10k pay rise

Tizliz

How can people afford that? 😵‍💫

I know!
A 20-a-day habit = £140 a week! Some £7,000+ a year.

I gave up in 2005 on Feb 1st. Never smoked a single one since. The main reason I gave up was because they were talking about the smoking ban in public places being introduced.

I saved a fortune and bought lots of treats like books, CDs, massage and beauty treatments, shoes and clothes and a beautiful summerhouse. I also treated my husband to several relaxing weekends away.

I stopped about six years ago. Went cold turkey. I don't feel an healthier, I didn't get many bugs when I smoked and don't now.
I still like the smell if I pass a smoker in the street. I miss smoking still.
I suppose I am glad that I stopped because of the money and because it is now socially unacceptable, but secretly wish it was different.

Oh well done. Cumbrianmale56.
Myself and DH have stopped smoking for over 8yrs now. We both went cold-turkey, he stopped first and I sort of followed suit.
The catalyst was a horrible flu bug but actually it was a blessing in disguise.
We both feel healthier & stronger & our savings are healthier too.
Another bonus is that we don't stink of fags anymore. We must have been mad to start in the first place! 🥴

Thankyou, I always wonder why I ever started, but I did a health check and it said by stopping smoking at 52, I've added 5 years to my life. Also the amount I save has meant I've been able to change my cars more often and not wonder where my money kept going.

Well done. I have always hated people smoking and think it is a filthy habit. Even more so now as I have lung cancer having never smoked in my life. I strongly suspect that this was caused by me inhaling other people's smoke.

So sorry to hear about your health problems Tiley. 🙏

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Fri 18-Apr-25 11:29:04

(Just shy of £18 if you’re interested!).

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Fri 18-Apr-25 11:27:58

I was astonished at the cost of 20 cigarettes someone was buying in front of me at the Sainsbury’s kiosk! Just wow.

I stopped smoking at the start of the first lockdown and, for all it was hard at first, I've managed not to touch another cigarette for 5 years. I feel a lot healthier- I get far fewer nasty colds and infections these days- I feel cleaner and I must be saving about £3000 a year. It's hard, but I would recommend stopping smoking to anyone as it does wonders for your health, your clothes don't smell of smoke, and it gives you a nice pay rise without working for it. For 35 years, I was a smoker and quitting at 52 was the best thing I did.
