Telling anyone to do a good deed every day has a rather old fashioned sound to it. But being sincerely kind to others, makes the doer of the kindness happier as well as the recipient. But that is not why the kindness is done - the motivation is for the other's happiness. The doer of the good deed feels happier, because kindness simply feels fitting.
There are many things we may regret, but kindness is not one of them.
Kindness of course requires a kind of wisdom - so you do not offer a drink to someone who is trying to give up, for instance. And you make sure you respect the other person and check if they want whatever you are offering. But a smile to a stranger in the supermarket is simple and uncomplicated and may cheer you and the other person for a long time after you lose sight of each other.
A delivery driver stopped in the lane the other day when I was out walking, and we had a brief chat - as he drove on he grinned and said "You've made my day!" He left me smiling too as I went on with my walk.
We are lucky to be able to give and receive kindness, and to do small good things in the world. What examples have others got of 'good deeds' or acts of kindness which have cheered them?
