A heartwarming story of the donkey foal with 2 mums

2 pregnant donkeys in a farm park in Dumfries weren’t expected to give birth for another 2 weeks. The farm manager arrived in their enclosure the other day to find a little foal standing between the 2 mums.

It wasn’t clear which donkey was the mother. He then noticed a second foal sadly lying dead nearby. Both donkeys had given birth overnight and both have bonded with the little foal assuming they are the mother. The foal is happily snuggling and feeding from both mums.

A DNA test to confirm the true mother would take 4 weeks so for now they are being left together and closely monitored. The hope is that they’ll remain a happy little family unit of three.

A lovely story and a clever choice of name for the foal if you know the story of King Solomon and the two mothers claiming a baby as theirs.

How amazing.
I has rabbits as a child and one got out and mated with a wild rabbit. She came back and had her babies.
She was a very unmotherly rabbit - but her sister who had never had babies, nursed the litter alongside her. It was quite amazing.

I know it's not the same but the two mums thing just reminded me.

That is a lovely story. It would be good if both donkeys continue to look after the 'baby'

I love donkeys. My maternal grandparents had a working donkey on their farm in Ireland. He was there in my earliest childhood memories and lived into his 20’s.

As a 5 year old, I believed my grandpa when he told me he was my donkey and he’d look after him for me in between family holidays. I was heartbroken when he died when I was 18, just a few days before we arrived for our summer holiday.
