Do you see yourself as a 'Pensioner'?

On the thread about the cost of hairdressing, some people mentioned concessionary prices for pensioners.

I didn't know it was still a thing and haven't seen it on offer here. It conjured up an image of white haired old ladies having a weekly shampoo and set, on rollers, sitting under a dryer.

Then it dawned on me that I am a pensioner!

I'm not a pensioner but does anyone know why women over a certain age used to have their hair cut short and have it permed like the former Queen - I suppose it was the generation that was the sage age as the former Queen?
Why did they all do it? How did it become a 'thing'?

It was the fashion when they were young. Then came the 60s and most young women grew their hair, which is why more and more women over, and well over, 60 still have long hair.

A friend, aged 85 has had her long hair cut short this year because it was getting so thin. It had been long since about 1962.

Now, of course, the most popular cut for older women is the pixie cut in its many variations. A cut I had in my 40s, but changed a along time ago

Never! I’m retired.

I will be 79 shortly and I just showed my son a photo of my mother in law on her 80th birthday. "Do I look almost as old as her?" I asked. His answer was "You are joking aren't you?" Now she was definitely a pensioner!

If a discount is on offer then I will take it . I actively told people about a discount provided by a bus company to those over 60 when it was not advertised/

kittylester Sun 04-May-25 15:20:36

Anno I don't care what colour your hair is or your actual age, you will never be an old lady - it's the attitude that counts.

Interesting question Jane Judge I would be interested to hear the answer.

My mother in law was like that, had a perm for years and years after perms went out of fashion. Went to the hairdresser every week for a shampoo and set. She was the same age as the late queen.

The Waitrose scheme is not open to new members.
Tesco withdrew their scheme a while ago.
I use the Iceland discount day and go to the Odeon Silver Cinema.
Boots has enhanced points for over 60s.

I can't find anything about M&S or Costa Coffee.

I do like your word “unsult” Monica (yesterday 10.26).

Carlotta Sun 04-May-25 12:01:44

A lot of the over 60s discounts that you find through a Google search no longer exist.

Well I know for a fact that the discounts at Iceland, Waitrose and Cineworld exist because I use them! grin

I've had pensions for nearly 25 years therefore I am a pensioner. And yes, Kitty I am a white haired old lady, though I don't ever sit under a drier in rollers. Cut and blow-dry for me.

Carlotta Sat 03-May-25 22:24:34

What discounts do you get at M&S? Never been offered anything with my sparks card for being over 60. Ditto Costa coffee?

Costa Coffee: Offers senior discounts on drinks with a Costa Club card (varies by location). I don't know how much the discount is but you could ask at your local branch.

Marks & Spencer offers a 10% discount for shoppers aged 60 and over, which is separate from the Sparks card discount. To receive the 60+ discount, you need to show a photo ID in-store or online. The Sparks card discount is a separate offer, and may also offer other benefits.

Also Tesco over 60 discount card:

What is the Tesco Over 60 Discount Card? The Tesco Over 60 Discount Card is a special membership card designed to provide senior shoppers with various discounts and perks. By signing up for this card, you can enjoy savings on a wide range of products and services.

Iceland Over-60s Discount:

Iceland have introduced a discount for over-60s. This deal can be claimed every Tuesday, and applies to every product. There is no minimum spend, either. All you need to be eligible is proof of age and you can get 10% off your weekly shop. This discount also applies in The Food Warehouse.

I’m quite happy to be called a pensioner - by definition, I draw a pension, so that’s what I am. I’m even more happy to accept any discounts going, however they’re described.

I’ve heard that Iceland offers a 10% discount to shoppers aged 60 and over every Tuesday.

And Boots gives double Advantage points to over 60s - you just need to sign up for them.

The National Trust and English Heritage offer cheaper membership rates, though with the NT it only applies if you’ve been a member for 3 years.

I’ve had “pensioner specials” at various fish and chip restaurants, and our local annual literature festival offers free tickets to events for all over 60s (as well as a lot of other people in many and various categories - they seem to be very generously funded as very few people actually have to pay). DH’s barber has special “senior” prices too. We once had an afternoon at the fantastic Gdańsk shipyard museum for the equivalent of 20p, by virtue of our age. We weren’t a bit put out when the person issuing our tickets identified us as old enough. smile

There have to be some advantages to getting old - I’m happy to embrace them all!

A pensioner is what I am, and I don't mind being referred to as one. And at 81 I wouldn't mind being defined as a grandfather of four, or whatever, if the occasion arose. I content myself with just not thinking of myself as old, though my joints remind me occasionally.

GrannyIvy Sat 03-May-25 17:38:13

I have never been offered discount at m & s or Waitrose in spite of shopping regularly at both shops 🤷‍♀️

Maybe I look too young 😂😂 Definitely hasn’t been advertised in my local stores I have noticed Waitrose is busy Tuesday mornings with the older generation!!

Celieanne86 Sat 03-May-25 17:34:27

I was quite shocked recently to hear my grandson refer to me as old grandma, he’s 21 and should know better. Admittedly his other grandma is in her 60s and I’m nearly 88 but it was still quite a rude awakening and he was told off by his dad, I fear the oil of Olay must have given up at last 😱

There are pensioner discounts if you look for them.

Waitrose: Offers a discount for over 60s on a Tuesday, providing 10% off when you have a My Waitrose card.
Marks & Spencer: Offers discounts for over 60s with a Sparks card.
Pizza Express: Offers discounts for seniors when dining in (typically on selected days or times).
Costa Coffee: Offers senior discounts on drinks with a Costa Club card (varies by location).

Cineworld: Offers discounts for seniors on cinema tickets. Some locations offer reduced ticket prices for those over 60.
Odeon: Seniors can get a discount on tickets, typically for morning showings.

National Express: Seniors can get discounts on coach travel, with a Senior Coachcard offering 1/3 off fares
Senior Railcard: A Senior Railcard (for those over 60) gives a 33% discount on most train fares throughout Great Britain.

Seek and ye shall find.

Wasn’t aware of the Waitrose offer.

Ditto Costa coffee.

I do have a bus pass which I use occasionally . I usually drive myself, and I get a “senior” ticket when I use the train but again only occasionally. On holiday last year I got a “senior rate” when visiting a museum but mostly wouldn’t think of myself as a pensioner .

I still work 3 mornings a week at almost 72 am completely independent and still think I’m forty years younger in my head!

Margiknot Sat 03-May-25 16:33:17

My hairdresser has a slightly lower rate at certain less popular times - it’s for anyone who can make those hours not age or income related.

hollysteers Sat 03-May-25 15:22:17

I see myself as a Senior Citizen.

Apparently it’s proving difficult to recruit Chelsea Pensioners🤔

I forget I am a pensioner now and have been known to forget to pay the OAP rate on going somewhere and been reminded by my daughter that I am a concessionary😂 I just think I’m retired and keep busy but lucky to get my DWP and have a bus pass. I’m fortunate at the moment to be fit and healthy but aware this can change in a heartbeat.

My hairdresser doesn't offer pensioner rates but he does give 10% off to students!!

An eye to the future, dragonfly.
