Today is No Tobacco Day

Not to be confused with No Smoking Day which was 12 March.

There is very real concern about the growing popularity of vaping, especially among young people.

There is mounting evidence that vaping is not a safe alternative to smoking but the tobacco industry is going all out to promote vaping and making it more attractive by marketing new flavours and new gadgets.

There needs to be more awareness of the dangers of vaping before another wide-spread tobacco related health issue is created.

Vaping does not involve tobacco?
Snus is a smokeless tobacco, originated in Sweden and is a growing trend.

You're right Jaxjacky, vapes don't contain tobacco.

Vapes CAN include nicotine, which is generally regarded as not toxic (though out for further research). But you can buy the juice in different nicotine strengths (including zero).

I was diagnosed with Oral Cancer in late 2023 and was a regular smoker. I switched immediately to vapes using medium-strength nicotine and the consultant was delighted, dismissing my concerns about their safety. I soon reduced the nicotine strength to the lowest available and am about to try zero nicotine.

I do use "Tobacco flavour" but although some liquids with this flavour are developed from tobacco leaves, no actual tobacco remains after processing.

That is not to say that e-cigs are completely risk-free but the damaging elements currently known about are far, far fewer and lower strength than those in cigarettes.

I do find it appalling that young, previously non-cigarette smokers have taken up using e-cigs and agree with the government's plan to charge duty on the liquids, as well as outlawing disposable e-cigs.

I understand why it’s important for smokers to be able to wean themselves off cigarettes by vaping. I’m a ex smoker myself and know how difficult it is to quit. But vaping is not without risks and can result in wet lung. It horrifies me that young people are vaping without realising that they could be causing long term damage to their lungs.

The scary thing is that very, very young people are vaping and that it comes in attractive flavours.Designed to attract young ones. These companies have absolutely no morals whatsoever.

To be perfectly honest I am more concerned about the fact that people are smoking cannabis more freely and blatantly than ever before.
It is a fact that young people becoming addicted to the strong stuff are at risk of developing psychosis.

On a side note, a ban on disposable single use vapes comes into force in the UK today. Hopefully this might help to stop people just throwing them away all over the place.

It was decades ago, but I still remember dh telling me how, during a business meeting, a colleague got his fags out and asked whether anyone would mind if he smoked.,

Someone said, ‘You do realise that this is No Smoking Day?’

‘Oh, is it? I’ll enjoy this all the more, then.’
Sorry, but I did 🤣!

MayBee70 wet lung doesn’t exist, you may mean Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome, it’s not caused by vaping
but most commonly from pneumonia or sepsis.
Information from the NHS site Myths about Vaping.

The MacMillan Nurse I spoke to still calls it wet lung. And she says that vaping long term will cause it and she’s horrified that young people are using vapes.

i have been vaping for the last 5 years, had a 60 a day habit, my doctor and the heart and lung doctor told me it was better to vape than smoke, although i went through 60 a day i was not a smoker who inhaled into my lungs as there was only a very small white patch on one lung, i use tobacco flavour oil, it is more of a comfort habit that helps with my stress, anxiety and epilepsy seizures brought on by other medical problems that are not from smoking or vaping, if they did not have all the flavoured oils. kids would be less likely to vape, they seem to thing a strawberry of cola vape makes them look cool and grown up.
