I find I am hanging about far too much, low energy, aches and pains. A pattern is developing of cups of coffee and no focus.

I'm wondering about " fighting" it and getting showered and dressed. I don't think I ever saw my Dad in a dressing gown or heard my mother say " I'm tired".
Different times I suppose

At age 84 I arise between 9 - 10p.m. Have breakfast, shower and dress, this takes me about 1 hour and 15 minutes. Most days I walk - or should I say stroll for about 2- 3 miles with my chum. We leave at 2p.m. and return about 4 - 4.30.

GrannySomerset you are still in what I call early grief that the first 10 years. After my husband died still had son at college and daughter last year of uni . Both parents to look after and mother in law. So I didn't have time to think about what I wanted. I was with my husband for 29 years and married 22.

You where properly married and a couple lot longer than me and it's harder. You go from having the other half of yourself to just being you . And if you feel as I do I am still only half a person .
How do you go from us to me in a blink of an eye. You can't it takes time to adjust .

I had a purpose but I wasn't happy . It took me from 2004 to 2019 to have a life . Grief is always there and still overwhelms me .

Is there anything no matter how small you want to try . Do it and see how you feel. Lot of classes are at local colleges at reduced rates for older people. Churches have various clubs but you don't have to be a member of the church . Lot of people hire church halls for activities. If you try something try something else. You will meet people of different ages and backgrounds.

It's scary putting yourself out there but it only takes going out of your front door. Even for a walk in a local park you will find people to talk to .I talk to people at bus stops ,in shops cafes . I never thought I would do all the things I do .
But you and everyone can try new things just takes a bit of courage . That first step in the hardest . But you can do it . What would your husband say ? 🌹

I've lived in pyjamas ever since the start of the pandemic. Only change into leggings when I go out, which isn't very often. Don't bother with make up most of the time. I do feel so much better if I do go out and meet people but then I realise how bad my mobility is which then gets me down again.

I get the dog walked for an hour before 11am, so I'm bathed, dressed and out by 10. If it's the day when I'm meeting people, it's a bit of a rush, other days I'm laid back.

Once I've done what needs doing, I'm back in pyjamas too.

I've never compared the structure of my day or week with my parents'!

That's interesting. They loom large in my psyche.

You change back into pyjamas?

My dressing gown is old, got bleach stains and needs putting in the rag bag so no, I don't wear it downstairs.

Perhaps if I bought a nice new one ..... if I could find one I like.

I have to have two cups of tea, something to eat and do Wordle before I can get going. This morning we had to rush out earlyish buf it was after the morning rush hour.

I'm older than you, though!

Allira Fri 13-Jun-25 16:34:03

I don't wear makeup unless I'm going out - giving your skin a rest is a good idea! I do moisturise.

My hair needs attention every morning.

With respect Maybee70 this way of living is not healthy.
Your not an old lady, you could have 20 more years on this earth.
For your own longevity make the effort.

Probably chicken and egg Maybee if you went out more your mobility would improve, perhaps just start a with a little walk and increase slowly every day? I think you have a dog, ypu could take him/her for a short walk.

I get up every day between 5.30 and 6, breakfast at 7.30 and dressed by 8. Sometimes I sew before breakfast, or I will start to potter around the house. My energy is always good at 77

Today I put a big wash on and went out on an hours cycle ride with some hills. Small lunch and then I altered a dress pattern and fixed the bolt on a dropped wooden gate and repaired a hose link to my water butts

My last meal is eaten by 3.30, I don`t eat anything for the next 16 hours

I applied for an allotment recently and have `owned` one since early december, it was in such a bad state that there was no charge until this april. I love going up there and usual cycle

What I am saying is that hobbies and projects are good for motivation, just sitting and waiting for something to happen is defeatist because life is for living and needs to be grabbed with both hands. We have to reach out

It does not matter that I don`t see people in my normal life, I am content in my own thoughts

I am widowed and live alone

I woke up feeling unwell this morning and was very slow to get going. However, I ALWAYS get dressed, if I was too ill to do so then I would go back to bed.
I had to make a bank transfer and didn't have a card reader, so my only choice was to force myself to get a bus and go into town even though I felt terrible and dosed up on Paracetamol. I asked for the card reader in the bank and the woman said,'That was easy!' I replied, 'Not for me it wasn't!'
I then decided to have a slad luch with a glass of wine for lunch and got the bus home, did my transaction and fell asleep.
Now, I cannot motivate myself to do anything even though I know I have to go to the supermarket as I have bed and I'm out of paracetamol!
Sometimes you just have to force yourself to do stuff...I have no appetite either, so the Greek salad with some pitta bread is all I've eaten...ssometimes you just have to write off a day and hope that tomorrow is better! Hope it is for you.

Just realised this my post is riddled with mistakes... can't be bothered to correct them...

Whitewavemark2 Fri 13-Jun-25 17:43:40

Since I lost my terrier in April 24 I have struggled to get into a walking routine. Always seem to find a reason or alternative pursuit.

But apart from that I find no problem keeping busy.

karmalady I am always in awe of you daily doings. Tell me, do you ever just sit and relax?

Whitewavemark2 Fri 13-Jun-25 17:45:09

PS I always shower and dress after breakfast -occasionally after I’ve finished the housework.

Whitewavemark2 Fri 13-Jun-25 17:47:16

Also I’m not a great one (well not at all) for makeup. I do take care of my skin though. And only wear makeup for dressy occasions, and even then only with a very light touch.

That's where I'm goign wrong, this faffing about with housework.

LadyGaGa Fri 13-Jun-25 17:59:17

I’ve never been a morning person - always a night owl. The best thing for me about retiring is not having to get up at the crack of dawn. I get up about half eight, have two pots of tea while I read the paper. I’m lucky to still have my husband with me, so we sit together, me reading and him watching the news. Might get a few jobs done in my jamas. We get showered/ dressed probably about half ten/eleven. That’s when I start to get my mo jo back and tackle the day. Of course there are days when I have to get up early, but I love my lazy mornings and don’t feel guilty at all!

TwiceAsNice Fri 13-Jun-25 18:00:02

I am up at 6 three mornings a week also still work . Up at 7-30 on Sundays for 9-45 church service ( it’s my old church since I’ve moved its a half hour drive) . The other days I get up later to please myself after taking a cup of tea back to bed.

I can’t do much walking . I’m waiting for a back operation which I hope will help me be more mobile and more importantly stop my chronic pain or at least improve it. I miss so many things because I can’t walk far or stand for very long without a lot of pain.

I have some lovely friends and plenty of interests and just try to enjoy each day . I’m 72 and other than my spinal problem I’m healthy

Dottydots Fri 13-Jun-25 18:19:56

I'm up at 7.00 to 7.30 each day, otherwise I have a headache. I try to go for a walk but sadly I don't often talk to anyone as my strokes have caused me problems with my speech and I feel embarrassed. Just talking about it now makes me want to cry, but I've just got to battle on.

Grammaretto Fri 13-Jun-25 18:23:05

I'm a lark who doesn't sleep well.
I make sure most days something is planned apart from keeping one free.
This forces me to get up and dressed by about 8am.

Claremont Fri 13-Jun-25 18:32:40

Alarm at 7.30, cup of tea at 8.00 then shower and its go go go. Sometimes my knee is very painful and won't bend - but I just get on with it.

Dottydots, I am so so sorry ot hear this. hugs, courage.

lafergar Fri 13-Jun-25 18:41:46

Aw Dotty, so sorry.

Dottydots Fri 13-Jun-25 18:44:45

Thank you Claremont and Lafergar.

dottydots my friend goes to stroke club and has found a lot of help there.

Don’t be embarrassed, I’m sure that most people would be only too keen to get to grips with your speech and understand you. Humour helps as well. If you go out the same time every day, I bet you see the same dog walkers as they tend to go out at the same time every day. Try getting friends with the dogs initially - they don’t care about you difficulties and 🤞 the rest will follow.
