Do you get up and get out?

I find I am hanging about far too much, low energy, aches and pains. A pattern is developing of cups of coffee and no focus.

I'm wondering about " fighting" it and getting showered and dressed. I don't think I ever saw my Dad in a dressing gown or heard my mother say " I'm tired".
Different times I suppose

I still work, but as a shift worker my days vary. For those who are retired just enjoy the time you have to either be energetic or lazy as you choose without any guilt. Our time on this Earth is short and if you’ve reached retirement it’s unlikely that you’ve had a life doing nothing much so this is now your time to spend as you wish. Get up early, get up late, have a relaxed brekkie and read a book. Who needs to be dressed and made up by 7 a.m😁 Forget what stuffy parents did, there’s no virtue in it, just meant they could never truly relax.Be different and do what you like not what you feel you should be doing.

I am a lark and wake early. I can’t stay in bed, I get up as soon as I wake at about 5. I potter around in dressing gown, drink coffee, do a Codeword puzzle, feed the animals.
I get dressed at about 7 and take my dog out for her main walk of most of an hour.
Later on I spend hours sitting down and I usually have a nap. It’s a shame to waste time when you have a limited time left but I don’t have the strength to do more.

I don’t do nothing, but read quite a bit, knit or chat on line. So that’s not an issue

As for kneeling😮😮
.

Not sure about my micro biome though. That involves stuff like kefir?

Happy to give it a go though.

Petra, I agree about using those muscles. Balance is incredibly important and core muscles need to be strong enough to support the body. I have good balance, can almost be at a standstill on my bike

Pilates is very good for core

Since I lost my terrier in April 24 I have struggled to get into a walking routine. Always seem to find a reason or alternative pursuit.

But apart from that I find no problem keeping busy.

karmalady I am always in awe of you daily doings. Tell me, do you ever just sit and relax?

Stting doing nothing is boring, my relaxation is to do things, kneeling down while weeding is very relaxing, so is spinning (wool).

I fully relax when I go to bed, upstairs by 9.15 and asleep by 10. Important to have a routine to enable the circadian rhythm to keep on a steady course. A good sleep is healing and so is eating to support our microbiome. The microbiome helps energy, health and happiness

I'm sure you are doing your best Maybee, which is all any of us can.

The answer to your problem is very easily fixed.
Pottering round the house and garden is very different to walking a distance outside.
All those muscles are only having a short time span work out so they arnt infact working whereas when you walk your not only taking longer strides ( using different muscles) but those muscles you use to potter around have to work a bit longer.

Some days we are lethargic and slow to get going but mainly winter months. In the warmer weather we are up, showered, dressed etc by 8 am and we sit in the garden planning our day. Today, despite the heat we drive to a lovely town, walked, looked around the shops and tourist areas, had lunch by the river, more walking and drive home. Now, we are having a quiet sit reading. We try to plan three days at least out and about plus hobbies and activities to keep us going.

I've lived in pyjamas ever since the start of the pandemic. Only change into leggings when I go out, which isn't very often. Don't bother with make up most of the time. I do feel so much better if I do go out and meet people but then I realise how bad my mobility is which then gets me down again.

With respect Maybee70 this way of living is not healthy.
Your not an old lady, you could have 20 more years on this earth.
For your own longevity make the effort.

When I’m at my partners we walk the dog on the beach every day. I can walk on firm damp sand on the beach. But I struggled last time to get to the beach across the dunes. A walk that I used to do every night along the road and then up a steep hill to the castle ( which was good cardiovascular exercise) I found I couldn’t do any more. I managed it once in four weeks. And when I joined a dog walking group which meets once a year I did the beach walk but struggled to walk back to the house on the pavement.I’m on my feet all day working on my house ( the neverending decluttering and gardening) but can’t walk outside of the house. I’m doing exercises in the house, too. I don’t understand why I can’t walk outside of the house ( actually questioning my sanity to be honest). Hopefully, when I get to see someone about my x ray results I can make sense of it all. I’m going to the gym next week to see how I get on with the equipment I used to use pre pandemic.

Dottydots

I'm up at 7.00 to 7.30 each day, otherwise I have a headache. I try to go for a walk but sadly I don't often talk to anyone as my strokes have caused me problems with my speech and I feel embarrassed. Just talking about it now makes me want to cry, but I've just got to battle on.

dottydots my friend goes to stroke club and has found a lot of help there.

Don’t be embarrassed, I’m sure that most people would be only too keen to get to grips with your speech and understand you. Humour helps as well. If you go out the same time every day, I bet you see the same dog walkers as they tend to go out at the same time every day. Try getting friends with the dogs initially - they don’t care about you difficulties and 🤞 the rest will follow.

Thank you Claremont and Lafergar.

lafergar Fri 13-Jun-25 18:41:46

Aw Dotty, so sorry.

Claremont Fri 13-Jun-25 18:32:40

Alarm at 7.30, cup of tea at 8.00 then shower and its go go go. Sometimes my knee is very painful and won't bend - but I just get on with it.

Dottydots, I am so so sorry ot hear this. hugs, courage.

I'm a lark who doesn't sleep well.
I make sure most days something is planned apart from keeping one free.
This forces me to get up and dressed by about 8am.

I am up at 6 three mornings a week also still work . Up at 7-30 on Sundays for 9-45 church service ( it’s my old church since I’ve moved its a half hour drive) . The other days I get up later to please myself after taking a cup of tea back to bed.

I can’t do much walking . I’m waiting for a back operation which I hope will help me be more mobile and more importantly stop my chronic pain or at least improve it. I miss so many things because I can’t walk far or stand for very long without a lot of pain.

I have some lovely friends and plenty of interests and just try to enjoy each day . I’m 72 and other than my spinal problem I’m healthy

I’ve never been a morning person - always a night owl. The best thing for me about retiring is not having to get up at the crack of dawn. I get up about half eight, have two pots of tea while I read the paper. I’m lucky to still have my husband with me, so we sit together, me reading and him watching the news. Might get a few jobs done in my jamas. We get showered/ dressed probably about half ten/eleven. That’s when I start to get my mo jo back and tackle the day. Of course there are days when I have to get up early, but I love my lazy mornings and don’t feel guilty at all!

PS I always shower and dress after breakfast -occasionally after I’ve finished the housework.

That's where I'm goign wrong, this faffing about with housework.

Whitewavemark2 Fri 13-Jun-25 17:47:16

Also I’m not a great one (well not at all) for makeup. I do take care of my skin though. And only wear makeup for dressy occasions, and even then only with a very light touch.

Just realised this my post is riddled with mistakes... can't be bothered to correct them...

keepingquiet Fri 13-Jun-25 17:26:40

I woke up feeling unwell this morning and was very slow to get going. However, I ALWAYS get dressed, if I was too ill to do so then I would go back to bed.
I had to make a bank transfer and didn't have a card reader, so my only choice was to force myself to get a bus and go into town even though I felt terrible and dosed up on Paracetamol. I asked for the card reader in the bank and the woman said,'That was easy!' I replied, 'Not for me it wasn't!'
I then decided to have a slad luch with a glass of wine for lunch and got the bus home, did my transaction and fell asleep.
Now, I cannot motivate myself to do anything even though I know I have to go to the supermarket as I have bed and I'm out of paracetamol!
Sometimes you just have to force yourself to do stuff...I have no appetite either, so the Greek salad with some pitta bread is all I've eaten...ssometimes you just have to write off a day and hope that tomorrow is better! Hope it is for you.

I am widowed and live alone

karmalady Fri 13-Jun-25 17:15:46

I get up every day between 5.30 and 6, breakfast at 7.30 and dressed by 8. Sometimes I sew before breakfast, or I will start to potter around the house. My energy is always good at 77

Today I put a big wash on and went out on an hours cycle ride with some hills. Small lunch and then I altered a dress pattern and fixed the bolt on a dropped wooden gate and repaired a hose link to my water butts

My last meal is eaten by 3.30, I don`t eat anything for the next 16 hours

I applied for an allotment recently and have `owned` one since early december, it was in such a bad state that there was no charge until this april. I love going up there and usual cycle

What I am saying is that hobbies and projects are good for motivation, just sitting and waiting for something to happen is defeatist because life is for living and needs to be grabbed with both hands. We have to reach out

It does not matter that I don`t see people in my normal life, I am content in my own thoughts
