There’s a beautiful hotel called The Gallivant near the beach in Camber. The food is excellent and if you go on their website you can order a superb picnic 😋

I agree with you about The Gallivant. My daughter and I had a lovely time there. Especially going through their gins 😂

For any pony fans it's the setting for Monica Edwards' Tamzin and Rissa books.

I'd forgotten all about these books until I read your comment. I seem to remember one book where the characters on horses dressed up as ghosts to frighten the villains away!

Not at Camber, it has sand dunes and then sand. No mud. I live in Sussex. You must be thinking of somewhere else?

It us lovely but for remember that you need to take your picnic and plenty of water ic you are spending a log of yome on yhe beach. The beach is soft sand, so not good for sandcastles unless the tide is low enough. The water is great but it shelves so you need to be very careful if non swimmers.
Rye has numerous interesting curio / antique shops. There are dome great places to eat. It is well worth depending time yo explore. The Mermaid Inn is up a steep cobbled hill. There is a lot to see and do. Have a great time.

I went on a trip which included time in Rye. Most interesting and attractive little town, but many of the less mobile in our party simply pootled along the main street then settled down in a cafe. They found the streets too hilly, not helped by the cobbles, so missed the church and castle.

Camber Sands is terrific if (a) you are under 20 and fit or (b) you have obedient dogs with excellent recall! The tide really does go out for miles. When it is in, it is not possible to swim because the water is only about 10" deep, if that. Very flat. Also the local authority increased the parking charges last year to an astronomical level. I think it went up to £35.

Rye is lovely (but hilly) but as previous posters have said - wear sensible shoes! A couple of years ago the local council wanted to concrete over the cobbles for elf and safety reasons. There was outrage, oddly enough!

The other option, of course, is to go to Rye and have a splendid lunch in the Mermaid Inn!!

A favourite beach of mine. You will enjoy it

I thought the beach was closed because of pollution? Worth checking before you go.

Last time I went to Camber Sands was 1966, it was lovely. Full of nothing but sand but in the distance I spotted a castle, we all trekked along the beach and lo and behold it was a castle all built for one of the Carry On films. It was just painted would but we had a lot of laughs larking about in it.

We went a couple of months ago - tide was out in the middle of the day & it is a long & very muddy walk to the sea !!

Nanny27 Wed 25-Jun-25 14:11:34

My parents lived in Rye

Also meant to mention lots of interesting antique shops at the Strand and a wonderful art gallery, like an unfolding tardis, in the High Street.

Two completely separate places.
Tide in or out will matter at Camber Sands which is wonderfully extensive and empty for walking with the tide out.
Rye beautiful - comfy trainers essential. Lots of independent shops and cafes in the High Street, old houses and cobbled streets in the Citadel, and fab views from the tower of the huge 900 year old church. Free maps in most places. Have a lovely visit.

Camber Sands is a lovely beach for children.
Rye is a lovely place for adults!

Both Rye and Camber Sands are worth a visit, but be careful of the tides! We were walking along the beach unaware that the water, albeit shallow at the time, had come in behind us! It was a wet walk back! 😆

Yes another vote for Rye which has pretty streets and shops, Winchelsea also. Camber Sands attracts families and crowds in the summer.

Parking is a total nightmare and if you are lucky enough to find a place it costs about £30 a day.
If you go by coach there won’t be a problem. It’s a huge beach with soft sand but the sea can be far far away.
There isn’t an awful lot there other than a few cafes, the beach is the draw.

Rye is a lovely old town.

🙂 Oh yes, I loved those books.
My DD is named after one of the heroines!

Rye is a lovely place for a visit. Winchelsea too. My daughter and SIL have a small holiday home there.

And quite hilly. Wasn't it where E Benson's books were set and tbe TV series filmed of Mapp and Lucia?

Yes, and IIRC E F Benson lived there.

Rye is lovely, very quaint with cobbled streets . At Rye harbour there’s a nature reserve. It’s flat and easy to walk with a pub by the river . Camber sands is very nice but gets very busy .

Bellanonna Tue 24-Jun-25 18:25:23

On a nice day you should enjoy both. At Camber you pass through dunes to get to the sandy beach. l don’t recall pebbles but could be wrong. Rye is lovely and I’m sure you’ll enjoy your visits to both places but do come back and tell us.

Allira Tue 24-Jun-25 18:12:59

Rye is lovely, thankfully you're on a coach trip because parking is difficult.

Tenterden is a very pretty town a few miles away
With a steam railway 🙂 🚞
