Ice cream

When I was a child ice cream came in small blocks which were put between two wafers. You could get the same thing covered with chocolate and they cost 6d.
Then there were family-sized blocks, brought home from the shop wrapped in newspaper as insulation. They were vanilla or striped, chocolate, strawberry and vanilla.
The ice cream then tasted of margarine and I dread to think what it was made from. Better ice cream came from the Italians and then came Mr Whippy, with whipped emulsion which had never seen actual cream and a 99 chocolate stuck in the top.
I think it was the 90s before we started to buy good dairy ice cream in cornets or tubs and I love it! In Rome there were a hundred flavours and even supermarket ice cream is pretty good now.
On this boiling hot day, which ice cream do you fancy?

A favourite recipe perhaps. Thanks.

My favourite always- I buy it from Carte d'Or.

How about recipes for homemade? I am particularly looking for NO EGG ice-cream and sorbets.

Brown bread icecream . Easy to make in the freezer and a lot more delicious than it sounds

I never was mad about ice cream TBH, but I buy Mackie’s proper dairy ice cream - and cornets! - for the Gdcs. At this time of year I top the cornets with a strawberry.

I do enjoy a mango sorbet though. 😋

I’ve just eaten a cherry magnum, very nice. I also like salted caramel. Anyone seen any banana ice cream ?

NotAGran55 Sun 29-Jun-25 18:31:09

My favourite 😋

Yes you can get coffee ice cream but not with nuts in any more!!

ViceVersa Sun 29-Jun-25 17:06:58

I think Tesco and M&S both do a coffee ice cream.

I make ice cream for the dogs as a very occasional treat. Mashed banana, smooth peanut butter and greek yoghurt. Mixed and thinned with a little water before freezing. I have to be honest, there are worse things.

Living in Alton. New Forest ice cream made with fresh cream is sold in several places. 👐👵😆

My friend called round with a tub for each of us of raspberry icecream from the Wee Isle dairy on the Isle of Gigha.
It was delish - a new flavour from them. Thankyou friend.

We didn't have a freezer when I was small - or even when my own children were little - so I remember how much of a treat ice-cream was!
I always loved vanilla best. 👌

Once we had a freezer If we had it at all it was always home-made. It was still A treat though.

Now we sometimes buy an ice cream if the grandchildren will be visiting- it isn't so much of a treat to them though. 🙁

I'd love a tub of Jude's Ginger Spice icecream. Sadly it's very hard to find.

That sounds delish😋

Ice cream is my vice too and especially on days like this. We’ve been into our nearest town today to a local cafe that make there own. Not surprisingly the fridge was half empty but I had raspberry cheesecake flavour in a tub. I’m not a fan of cones.
Yesterday at another well known (to the area) place I had strawberries and cream. A limited edition for Wimbledon.
I have to say chocolatelovinggran I think the best ice cream I have had was in Italy and the best flavour never found anywhere else was fig flavour. Just amazing.

Coffee ice cream. Why is it so difficult to find now?

ViceVersa Sun 29-Jun-25 15:59:19

Ooh, I do like ice cream - but it has to be good ice cream, none of the cheapy stuff! Ben and Jerry's Cherry Garcia used to be one of the favourites, but I haven't seen it in ages. There are very few flavours I don't like, to be honest - but my favourites include pistachio, anything with almonds/amaretto and cherries in it - and I also love a nice sorbet. Vanilla - yes, has to be good 'proper' vanilla - to have with lovely fresh berries and maybe some meringue.

Salted caramel is my latest favourite ice cream

Nannynoodles Sun 29-Jun-25 15:51:16

I used to like a chocolate or coffee and nut ice cream cornet but they are impossible to find now.
Maybe because of nut allergies?

JamesandJon33 Sun 29-Jun-25 15:51:03

The hotel we go to makes their own liquorice ice cream. It’s marvellous.

boheminan Sun 29-Jun-25 15:44:51

The highlight of any holiday for me was always a knickerbocker glory. I think they used to sell them in Wimpy bars.

Casdon Sun 29-Jun-25 15:41:26

I’d always choose a sorbet (preferably lemon or blackcurrant) over ice cream, it’s never been something I crave, as I’m not keen on milk or cream and it doesn’t like me either. If I did have some, it would need to be strong flavoured to disguise the underlying dairy taste, like rum and raisin, or a flavoured yoghurt one.

I'm in Liverpool right now....I've just had a Cheshire made coconut scoop in a waffle cone 😋

AmberGran Sun 29-Jun-25 15:37:34

We had a mini Magnum after dinner yesterday. Haven't had one in years. The best bit is biting off the dark chocolate from round the outside grin

AGAA4 Sun 29-Jun-25 15:30:26

A good quality vanilla for me. My DD says it's boring.

Shinamae Sun 29-Jun-25 15:23:22

I don’t drink and I don’t smoke but ice cream is my vice and I go to the ice cream parlour in town at least once a week and sometimes twice and I have a wonderful concoction with strawberries and bananas Three different sorts of ice cream topped off with whipped cream and chocolate sprinkles….😋
