Is intolerance getting worse on GN?

I am horrified to have been told, in the last couple of days, that Rod Stewart's music should not be listened to because he supports reform and to stop watching Eastenders and read a library book.

Well, I watched Rod Stewart and am still an SDP supporter - if they only still existed!

And, the library in our village is a very successfully run community library which i helped transition from Council control -between watching episodes of Eastenders.

For goodness sake - get a grip some of you!

If you disliked the song, Wyllow, just imagine how I felt on the more than one occasion when someone who didn’t pay attention to lyrics dedicated it to me at a disco. I’d be in my late teens, and absolutely drop dead gorgeous (of course grin).

Maggie May was a Liverpool prostitute who features in other songs. She steals a sailor’s money in some and gets him transported to Botany Bay in others.

Tonight’s The Night is grim though.

LizzieDrip Tue 01-Jul-25 10:00:04

Nevertheless Wyllow the next lines are:

“But that don’t worry me none,
In my eyes, you’re everything”

🤣🤣🤣

I took a dislike to Rod when his song came out, "Maggie May". There we all were bopping at a disco and it was only later I felt a profound unease. The song is of a young man who falls for an older women and he has a big offensive moan about her

read the lyrics, its as misogynist as any song can be

www.google.com/search?client=safari&rls=en&q=lyrics+maggie+May&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8

"You led me away from home
Just to save you from being alone
You stole my heart and that's what really hurts
The morning sun when it's in your face
Really shows your age"

Later events therefore didn't come as a surprise.

Not a good look to bring up old grudges on threads and ATAAT isn’t going to last long.

Excuse me? I didn’t bring it up. Someone else did, and her recollection of it was criticised by someone who suggested I was ‘uppity’ and had angered a group of posters. I reacted to that post.

Why are you getting involved if it’s such bad form?

Er no I never mentioned YOU personally at all Doodledog with the uppity word. I was suggesting a few posters, the names were irrelevant.
And now, for apology number 3, for using the word to any GNs who think I meant them!

Ooh, and Elaine and Linda, and Felix and Johnny....and Callum.

Excuse me while I go and read a library book.

Yes.

He lived next door to our very good friends, then sold his house to a footballer.

My son lived next door to Nigerian Princes. Ar least they said they were.

Nigel wasn't involved last night, escaped, but Bernie was!!!!!

I thought Rod was from Essex too. Didn't know he was a Londoner. Talking of Essex reminded me of David Essex and one of my favourite songs It was only a winter's tale.

Did you ever see "Mutiny"? Amazing!

He lived 2 doors from me in Queen Anne's Place, Enfield. I got around the districts!

I don't like Rod Stewart but find myself dancing around to Maggie May and love I am sailing.
I'm alright if I don't actually have to see him.

I love Rod Stewart, his older songs are often poignant and he’s not an Essex Boy (even though he lives there), he’s a Londoner through and through with a Londoner Mum and a Scottish Dad.

Yeah, you know what I mean. He lives in Essex. Has done for ages.
I'm an honorary Essex girl (10+ years of my life!)

LizzieDrip Tue 01-Jul-25 09:31:57

Thanks WW and Cossy.

That’s what my friend thought😉

There’s always someone who is offended by something and they have to be loud about it rather than just thinking it.

We recently went to a fun day which was packed and had a great music line up including a group of local men singing sea shanties. Everyone seemed to enjoy it and they got great applause. A woman walked past and said very loudly “I was enjoying the day until that last song which was SO misogynistic.” Someone pointed out that those old sea shanties have been around for centuries.

Whitewavemark2 Tue 01-Jul-25 09:21:38

That was to lizzie

Not wanting to get involved in the ‘discussion’ upper thread, but just asking for a friend🤔 … is referring to someone as a ‘righty’ deemed a personal attack?

No more than being called a “leftie”

And, Stenders was good last night - 2 episodes!

I've got sooo much to catch up on - no English TV here for weeks.
Hope Nigel is OK.

Now, the burning question of the day…does Rod wear a wig?🤔

C'mon. He's an Essex guy! Hair transplants and cosmetic procedures! 😆

Having been up close to him, if he has had any procedures (which I doubt) they were not successful.

😆

Lucky you, up close! I never bumped into him in Epping l, although M & S foodhall usually has a few celebs lurking! Xx

Doodledog Tue 01-Jul-25 09:13:11

Rod has some good songs, I agree. I hate Sailing though grin.
