Is intolerance getting worse on GN?

I am horrified to have been told, in the last couple of days, that Rod Stewart's music should not be listened to because he supports reform and to stop watching Eastenders and read a library book.

Well, I watched Rod Stewart and am still an SDP supporter - if they only still existed!

And, the library in our village is a very successfully run community library which i helped transition from Council control -between watching episodes of Eastenders.

For goodness sake - get a grip some of you!

Not a good look to bring up old grudges on threads and ATAAT isn’t going to last long.

Excuse me? I didn’t bring it up. Someone else did, and her recollection of it was criticised by someone who suggested I was ‘uppity’ and had angered a group of posters. I reacted to that post.

Why are you getting involved if it’s such bad form?

Now, the burning question of the day…does Rod wear a wig?🤔

C'mon. He's an Essex guy! Hair transplants and cosmetic procedures! 😆

Having been up close to him, if he has had any procedures (which I doubt) they were not successful.

Our idols often turn out to have feet of clay don’t they? In the past they weren’t often found out but in today’s world there’s nowhere to hide.

Yes, the days when stars could hide their sexuality or pay off people they’d abused are over, fortunately. Having every detail of their lives pored over, and exposed to public view is not always a positive thing though.

Blimey😄😄😊.

kitty your point has been well and truly made!!

Lets defuse this: ( I say this not out of fear of your threats

Oh my god you’re getting worse.
I have not threatened you. I have told you I am reporting your posts.
Can you please leave this in the hands of HQ.

I quite enjoyed the waffling about singers, Billy Bragg is deeply unpleasant, I may be shallow but it always makes me happy when he is criticisedgrin.
Someone asked if the moderators let you know if you have been reported, all I know is they used to. I have been reported twice, once for calling a male poster a misogynist and once for repeating a deleted post. HQ told me in quite a lot of detail why I had been deleted with regard to the male poster. They were right it was of course a personal attack but I certainly didn't regret it.

I struggle with separating the art from its creator if they’ve behaved really badly. I don’t care about Rod Stewart’s politics. He’s done some good stuff for charities. His music isn’t something I’d ask Alexa to play but I can sing along if it’s on my car radio.
Gill, who created beautiful church pews and so on, sexually abused his children. I can’t admire nor would I seek out his work.

Of course if the musicians ( I use the term very, very loosely) are shouting hateful slogans from a stage in front of thousands and being recorded live by the BBC then it’s easy to dislike them for their views.

Perhaps people don't always feel too well, maybe they are going through a rough patch. We don't really know do we? It's just a name on a screen.

It's not helping anybody this is it?

👍

GNs in reference to the OP, would you class a targetted 'pile on' as being intolerant? Just asking, as a point of information.

I reacted to being called ‘uppity'
FGS, I publically apologised to you and everyone on here, Doodledog and tried to make up. Perhaps you don't recall that either? Conveniently.

What a lot of irritation over not a lot —. in my opinion. Well said, Iam64. It's probably the heat, and I count myself in this too!

I admire the work of Caravaggio and have to screen out what he did when not actually painting.Wagners music is splendid but requires more screening out.
It’s a difficult one but generally speaking you can admire the creativity whilst disliking the politics or whatever else in the life of the artist.

AGAA4 Tue 01-Jul-25 08:38:56

This is between two posters so best to keep out of it.

kittylester Tue 01-Jul-25 08:38:20

I think Bluebelle's post illustrates that it possible get over things and move on.

Discretion is, often, the better part of valour.

I think with any creative or artistic well known people it’s often better not to know too much about their personal life if you like their music or art for example.
Once you know something about them, if they are open about it and even boastful then it’s hard to ignore and is off putting.
I don’t include their politics in that, it would have to be something really repugnant.

Some politics are repugnant though. Rod Stewart is on record as saying really racist things, as is Eric Clapton. It’s not just ‘it was the 70s’ (I do think we should make some allowances for people behaving in line with the times) but I draw the line at racism. I agree that unless the image is constructed around a political view (eg Springsteen, Dylan etc) it’s best not to know. People criticise Taylor Swift for not leaking her political views, but I think she (or her advisors) is wise. It’s not what she’s about.

Iam64 Tue 01-Jul-25 08:29:56

Well this thread suggests to me that recollections do indeed vary, as do reasons for taking offence and pressing report buttons.

So you can’t find the thread? Is that what you’re saying?

Like I said, I tried and tried with all the key words I could, even finding a likely one and checking all the way through.

I felt unable to do, what as a Quaker I believe in so strongly, "speak truth to Power"

But out of respect as I said above I have reported myself since I can of course see on reflection it was unwise if it could not be proved. I just ask posters who know me to judge if I'm the sort to lie about something like this

It really really did get to me you know.
