Slightly off the OP but worth commenting on because it’s something that is actually happening.

My area has been plagued with young lads, faces covered, riding bikes really fast on & off pavements - a blooming nuisance, particularly to the elderly and children pedestrians.

This past few weeks, I’ve noticed increased police cars just driving round, and police officers actually walking the streets - chatting to folk.

Initially I thought something was afoot but apparently it’s part of the Safer Streets initiative.

Guess what, hardly any ‘balaclavad’ lads on bikes around now. What a difference!

Doodledog I understand. However this labour government seems to be focusing on England at the expense to Scotland so far. Our refinery is being closed but one in England is being taken into public ownership. That sort of thing. Sure start is excellent and I would hope the Scottish government will follow suit

Good that Best/Sure Start is back. Just one example of Blair's achievements most of which were rubbished by Corbyn but why don't we hear about it? I've not heard one Labour Minister mention it when being interviewed - they do need to start telling the good stories repeatedly. Good policies alone are not enough to sway voters.

We lost three centres of excellence in our area thanks to Austerity. Cameron said they were not reaching families who needed them but being used by families like his 🙈. Not in Blackburn, Bolton, Burnley, Accrington the weren’t, they were reaching vulnerable, hard to reach children. We now have huge numbers of children in care, some of whom could remain at home if effective preventive and support services still existed

We lost two, due to decreasing or low usage. They reopened under a different heading, but covering a wider range of support issues. DD recommended one of the new centres which was very useful to her re ASC.

same here and we have also had an increased police presence and guess what? they have disappeared. What a menace they were and how did it even become 'a thing'

Think I’ve answered my own question. Seems to be £500m for 1,000 hubs rolled out by 2028. Excellent news!

I remember David Cameron saying that. The centres cater for a very local community. They serve primarily a pram-pushing clientele. Those who can’t walk to them don’t use them but those living a bit further away and have transport do. Not sure how you get round that.

We had a Surestart/Childen's centre at the end of my road for many years.

A few months ago it closed and in September will be a private children's nursery.

Seems this has come too late for young families in my community...

I haven't heard of them. So I have just Googled my area.
There isn't any close by, so you would need to drive or get a taxi to get to the nearest one, no Bus route either.
Also asked my DD who has 2 children under 5, she was not aware of their existence either.

Hopefully the new proposals will address these problems by making the service available more widely.
They are likely to be aimed at deprived communities, which makes sense.

Because when the coalition government came into power in 2010 they were the first thing to go under austerity measures

Excellent news. My daughter was a Sure start volunteer. She was paired with families that had need of support for up to a year. She would visit the family for two hours weekly and play with the children (in one case), helping them develop their language skills. This gave the mum time for herself. The centres provided much needed support, especially for families that didn't have access or knowledge of NCT classes or Parents &Toddler groups etc. I truly feel that for every £ we invest in the early years we are repaid 100 fold in reduced crime, mental health issues, vandalism etc. We must invest in our precious children.

That's really good news. Getting young families fully supported gives better outcomes for the child and society.

Do you really believe all that? I'm obviously getting my info from a different source. I'll never vote Labour again ever.

Will await the introduction of Best Start to see exactly what is to be provided. Have all the details been released and where are all the people coming from to provide the services?

Really please the government is going to put some real money back into early years support.

It sounds promised but are some of these for England only (again!)?

That is because the funding for Scotland and Wales is in the hands of the devolved governments for health and education, and it is these who can choose or not to implement

Probably from the resources already in place. I will be interested to see which existing places will be renamed as Best Start and which will continue to be used as they are currently.

its brilliant news!!! Labour are doing fab now, really finding their feet.
Sure start was fab, as an ex child protection social worker if I knew someone struggling with parenting, which is easy to do on minimal resources, I'd take them along to sure start who would help them through difficult times.

Best Start is what it us called. This is exactly what I have been wanting this government to do from day one. Thank goodness for a proper Labour policy at last. We just have to hope that subsequent governments do not knock it on the head as happened before.

We must indeed invest in children and families, both for their own sake and for ours. We will all reap the benefit further down the line in so many ways. Fit well educated young adults who feel invested in our society rather than on the periphery.
