Do you remember when GN had guests?

The recent thread that mentioned the parties, the bar and other silliness reminded me of other things we have lost

The prizes, the giveaways and the guest speakers.

I won a poster, a self catering holiday, children's toys. I had free books, skincare etc.

It made me quite sad to remember it all.

I think GN was probably friendlier in the early days, with more interaction from GNHQ - they’d frequently participate in some of the threads. I think it has become more impersonal somehow and it’s rare to hear from any GNHQ member of staff unless it’s to remind us of protocol these days. It certainly doesn’t seem as much fun as it once did.

I don't know but would imagine there are more members and posters now - that's my perception at least.

Some amazing prizes, why didn't I enter any of these competitions I'm asking myself? sad I did at least get on a couple of the guest questions and answers threads where a couple of mine were addressed by Judy Finnigan and Jeanine Cummins who wrote American Dirt. Although on reflection, I'd rather have had a Spa Day.

Oh yes I remember those competitions.
I was so chuffed to win a substantial John Lewis voucher some years back.

So is the GN site a lot smaller nowadays?

Nothing stays the same, sadly. I have tried mumsnet but prefer it here, there are a few funny ‘uns in mumsnet.

I was amazed to win anything, luck doesn’t usually come my way. There were books, some beautiful hand crafted mugs, a Christmas hamper and a gift box of woollen items, still in use and admired now.

Those were the days my friends. smile.

I won a high chair that could be fitted onto an ordinary chair. My son and his partner were delighted with it I also won a day out to Chessington with my daughter and her two children. We had a lovely day there.

Oh, it was such fun back then! I managed to get a book most months and won some lovely prizes. Including a family Forest Holiday which DS, DD2 and their partners enjoyed - their children were then only toddlers so went along for free - and afternoon tea for DH and me with M.C. Beaton including an overnight stay in Stirling, which was great fun. We were so lucky to be part of GN in those early days.

NanKate Wed 09-Jul-25 20:08:44

I won a book. Clearly they are cutting back financially 😏

M0nica Wed 09-Jul-25 20:06:54

I won a mother and daughter spa day. It has triggered a spa enthusiasm, not just DD and Me but also DH and now, DGD. We have tried lots of spas, but none as good as the first one we went o and we still go back there.

We do 3 or 4 spa days a year.

Greenfinch Wed 09-Jul-25 16:21:08

I won a book almost every month and was happy to write a review. I also won a box of children’s books and a hamper of food . I don’t remember the guests though.

Ziplok Wed 09-Jul-25 16:09:44

Yes, I won several books. The stipulation was to write reviews, which I did.
If I remember rightly, there was also the opportunity to ask authors questions about their books and they would give an answer session a few months later. That was always interesting.
It’s a shame none of these competitions and blogs are around any more.

joannapiano Wed 09-Jul-25 14:04:13

I also won lots of the books, and then wrote reviews on them.

JamesandJon33 Wed 09-Jul-25 14:02:27

Calendargirl Wed 09-Jul-25 13:24:21
