British Citizenship Tests - Would You Pass?

Has anyone come across the compulsory tests for people wishing to obtain British Citizenship? There are sample test papers available online.

I have done several and I didn't find them very easy but perhaps that is just me.

My DIL aced it. She's an American, one of the questions when she took it was "can you speak English".

What was nice few months after there was a lovely ceremony and I believe the local Mayor presented the certificate 's to the successful recipients.

In the US ,I was asked where I came from as the lady "loved my accent" I replied I was from England. She then asked "Where"s that". Would she have been able to confirm that she spoke English?

My Australian son in law took the test and passed. I found it really difficult.

I didn't fail any of the ones I tried, but some questions were ambiguously , unclearly or simply incorrectly worded.

And some of them had nothing to do with Britain or the UK

I passed with 79% but there were some absolutely stupid questions there. Enough that I certainly wouldn’t want to live there again. That and the current political mess, rather live in Beijing.

There’s a very funny prologue in Bill Brysons book ‘ The Road to Little Dribbling ‘that talks about him taking the test.

Well I failed!!

Me, too - with 71%
I didn't bother to read the revision notes as suggested beforehand.

This old chestnut again! Yes, the questions are pretty random. No, the average Brit might not pass. Unless they had studied the book that contained all the possible questions (and there aren’t THAT many).
The point isn’t about knowing random facts. It’s about demonstrating that you’re prepared to put in a bit of effort, that you take the whole thing seriously.
Same thing with the written driving test. Some of the questions could be, well, questioned :-) But the answers are all ‘in the book’. Just learn them.

I do apologise for introducing an Old chestnut yet again. I have only been on GN a relatively short time and I didn't realise that this subject had already been done to death.

Don't worry, Magenta
I've had fun finding out what I didn't know 😁

My friend whom I’ve worked with for years panicked in case anything happened to her husband she’s been in this country nearl thirty year so she applied for it I was amazed at the questions!

I took one once out of curiosity (it was on-line, for fun, could you pass? kind of thing), about 40 questions, I think I got 36 and passed, DH also passed but got slightly less (34 I think), you had to get something like 75% to pass

Calendargirl Thu 17-Jul-25 17:54:58

I passed, but with a few wrong.

Some things I had never heard of.

blush

mokryna Thu 17-Jul-25 17:52:06

Oh dear two wrong but surely there are a written and oral tests as well?

Allira Thu 17-Jul-25 17:48:03

Ps DH knew the answer to cricket question, so presumably he can stay.
Spoiler alert:
Come on - it can't just last for five days it seems to go on all summer! 🏏

Allira Thu 17-Jul-25 17:45:19

I passed the three tests I took earlier but did get some questions wrong - I got the cricket one wrong 😯

westendgirl Thu 17-Jul-25 17:36:23

~I had a go at one set of questions and with guess work and some remembered knowledge just failed on two questions.
On the whole I thought the questions were irrelevant and most of them difficult. There were few about the way of life, how get about, education, attitudes etc..

Mauduit24 Thu 17-Jul-25 17:28:43

A friend of mine sat the citizenship test .we looked it up it’s not easy to say the least, but what relevance is it to modern day British life ?.

TerriBull Thu 17-Jul-25 17:20:00

One of the Australians in our family circle showed us the questionnaire, some of the stuff pretty arbitrary and somewhat irrelevant. As others have said, ask random British people on the street the same set of questions, and I have no doubt many would be stumped. I think it's more important for any individual intending to settle in another country to commit to abiding by their laws and to respect their culture. Having had an interview at Australia House many years ago with my ex for residents visas, not for the faint hearted, I was almost in tears at the end of it, even if we did get the visas.

SusieH Thu 17-Jul-25 16:58:17

My Italian teacher, and 4 Brits had a go, and we ALL failed. Some of the questions were so strange, and frankly, no arbiter of whether the foreigner would fit into British life, which I assume is what it is for?
Perhaps someone should come up with something better?!

M0nica Thu 17-Jul-25 16:48:58

I did a couple of the sample tests and really felt some of the questions were irrelevant.

One question asked me to recognise which of 4 famous film directors were British and what were the warring sides in the Civil War called. If, like me, you have little or no interest in films and rarely watch them, does that make you unfit to be a British citizen? It could be the one question that puts you over the limit so you fail.

I did a test online, scored 100%. questions included history, culture, traditions, values, national moral framework and laws. Nothing in the test were difficult, obscure or "trick questions", just a check that people wanting to come to live in the UK understand and respect our culture and values. It's a pity that it was not introduced years ago.

Well done - I though some of the questions were not those the average Brit would be able to answer though.

It has been around quite a while. In 2000, I remember being stopped in a Peterborough street by an earnest Chinese gentleman who asked where he could get a cream tea; I directed him to John Lewis, only to see him take out a questionnaire to write it down. Then the penny dropped <lol>

You should have sent him to Devon 🤭

Well, I can stay, but note to self: brush up on Irish history

Begorrah!
