Is it just me or does anyone else cringe when owners refer to their dogs as ā€˜fur babies’? Think I’m turning into a grumpy old woman 😠.

I responded to seeing a braw Scottie in an outfit that he didn't need it, he was a dog with a perfect fur coat. I got a lot of indignant replies (mainly USA). Blocked the lot! So satisfying.
PS I do love Scotties (we had two) but never felt the need to dress them up. Nor would either of them have tolerated it . . .

In America we noticed there were fenced off areas for dogs. The right way around I would think.

Absolutely agree. At the park yesterday in the kids’ playground — children have this small fenced off area while dogs get the rest of the huge park.
And still the ā€˜fur baby parents’ brought them into the no-dog zone 🤢
Do we have our priorities wrong in this country?

The children have the rest of the park too. Not all people with children dislike having dogs around. There are still loads of places dogs can't go including vast tracts of beach where kids are allowed. I realise there are horrible people who don't pick up after their dogs but the most common spoiling of the children's areas are by teens who practise vandalism as a hobby.
I would have spoken to the people who took their dogs into the fenced off area. I don't think that is on. We actually have a park without a fenced off play area and I want to see it so even though I am a dog owner.

BlueBelle when an animal dies and goes to the other side (what I call back home) they are guided by the angels. The bridge is made up of the colours of the angels that take them across. E.g.archangel Michael is the blue or indigo.
I know a few mediums and psychics and some of them have actually seen people’s pets go across the rainbow bridge to safety, love and happiness and all illnesses have disappeared

I've never seen an animal cross over but I saw one a couple of weeks later that came to show me she was ok. Death is not the end šŸ’”

Did you speak to the dog owners who brought their children into the play area? I would have.

I think there are a massive number of dogs in this country. They seemt have become a sub set of homo sapiens. Will not be surpised if the near future they will ne counted in the population and allowed to vote

Hmmm the problem would be that not all digs live to 16. Although the 7 dog years to 1 human year would make them just over two. I’m not sure that even the most ardent early boter woukd go for that.

Thank you, Betony. Billy Wilder was quite right!!

Betony Fri 25-Jul-25 16:43:40

Point taken, icanhandthemback! Just remember what the great Billy Wilder said: 'Nobody's perfect'.

Don't know about fur babies, but I just love the term cake baby for someone who has put on a lot of weight around the middle, but nothing to do with pregnancy!

I think that is quite a cruel term. Probably because I have a lot of weight around the middle with the skinniest legs you've ever seen!

part of human nature to nurture

Yes that’s a good point Happikyretited123. During my tough year with bereavement, shoulder break and abdominal surgery meeting the needs of my dogs played a significant role in my following medical and physio advice to the letter.

It’s just something else to moan about. As you say, what people call their dogs is their own business.

Smileless2012 Wed 23-Jul-25 17:22:43

I would never assume that a post on social media saying 'My boy has gone missing' would be in reference to a child.

Elrel Wed 23-Jul-25 17:19:03

It can be disconcerting to see appeals on Next Door and other social media which say ā€˜My boy has gone missing’ when it is not a child but a beloved animal.

I am not sure I understand why that should provoke a reaction from you - what dog owners call their dogs is their own business!
Dogs, and cats have been shown to relieve loneliness and stress and they can be a lifeline to some people, so it’s not surprising some people think of them as fur babies. Part of the human instinct to nurture maybe.

I would personally avoid "Rainbow Bridge" & "Fur Baby" but many pet dogs are fur babies in the family and if you watch the RSPCA ads, you have to be pleased for them that they are cared for as carefully as a baby would be.

Well said Vivaldi. Every dog deserves a loving home with owners that put the dogs wellbeing first.
I am a dog owner and treat mine as loving dogs, don’t dress them up etc. If people want to call their dogs ā€œfur babiesā€ and refer to themselves as mummy and daddy, why should that annoy other people? Indeed it isn’t anyone else’s business!
I do have a friend who is rather disapproving of the dog/human bond and I rather enjoy referring to my dogs as ā€œfur babiesā€ just to wind them up!

Blossoming Wed 23-Jul-25 15:40:36

My cats were never my babies. For one thing I have never seen a real human baby sitting under my car (so I couldn’t reach them) dismembering a freshly caught rabbit.
