Thanks for the greeting glammagran. Just sat down with coffee and waiting for sausages to cook for breakfast so catching up again. Been awake since before 4am so this seems like lunch time rather than breakfast.
Well mindful of the wretched scammers and thieves about, I dont say where I am going or the dates etc, and keep quiet until I am back home. Hence no info from me before. Now all can be revealed!!
Some months ago I had decided that I would hopefully have one last big trip at least, and usually do all my own organising. But this time I had decided to go to Canada, not been over there before and so enlisted some assistance and Hayes travel are very good here. The thing was that I would be 80 on July 10th. I wanted to do something to prove I am still the kind of person who can go around and travel and meet people as I always was, but of course where they get you in the short and curleys is the wretched insurance!! I have no problem with costs going up due to medical reasons, but the outrageous way they put the cost up by age is maddening and there is very little you can do about it The cost in your 70's is bad but say you are 80 and it costs as much as the flipping holiday!! So when in doubt use brain! When I was 79 and three weeks I took out an annual insurance, which cost enough as it was. As they will always wriggle out of it if they can during the year I contacted them for things like when I had my cataract done. They of course say they didnt need to know that , but I have covered my back that way. So the insurance covered me for anything during the year and then I was able to contact them and say I would be 80 whilst away in Canada but hoped they were not going to charge me extra for the 5/6 days left on the policy!! So that worked well., and got my canadian visa ok
I worked for an airline and could have gone to usa whenever but never wanted to go there, but should have gone to Brazil and instead ended up in Syria. So now it was up to me and I organized to fly from Manchester - rail direct from here no changes, and to arrive in Toronto lunch time. This would enable me to check on where my train went from the following day and go to my hotel. I booked to go on this Via trip 3 days and nights across to Jasper. I wanted to see the countryside all the way over etc and it was booked as a recliner chair and a bed for the nights. Then I was going to visit the Athabasca glacier, Banff etc et but ending up with my real treat of 2 days on the Rocky Mountain journey, where I would be treated as I should always have been treated, waited on hand and foot, marvellous view and great food and glass roof etc. !!!
After I had booked it all and paid for it, I then had quite a bad patch physically and my back was so bad could hardly walk about . Felt very depressed etc etc., and am very independant and hate having to ask for help. Began to wonder if I had been mad to set it up but was very much helped by an extremely annoying man at a meeting I attended. When I explained why I would not be at the following meeting, he had the cheek to ask if I was being rather selfish to risk such travelling etc etc. when someone might have to come out to get me!! He was so patronising that I am afraid I replied that as I spoke several languages and had moved round the world, whilst he only spoke english and expected the world to do everything for him, and that I would of course be fine and left in a huff.
I did begin to wonder when my planned journey to manchester airport by train - get on and direct no changes - was not possible as it was the one day they had shut the line for whatever they needed to do and so had to get someone to drive me there. Not the best start. Well got in and the flight was with Air Canada and they ushered through to the departure lounge before announcing that the inbound flight was about 3 hours late and consequently stuck for several hours in the airport and only arrived in Toronto at 8.30pm!! No chance to check out train for the following morning and just to hotel .
Following morning went straight to the station to be sure of the train and they were not boarding for 2 hours but no matter I was not going to miss it - as the rest of the trip depended on that train. So eventually we got going and I found my seat ok. Not a lot of room, and with all the hassle with the flight my back wasnt so great. Asked the attendant about my sleeping berth and she replied that they didnt have any free and so I was on the seat only for 3 days and nights!!! Wasnt their fault , they were doing the best they could. Anyway things could have been better, but I really enjoyed meeting all sorts of people and getting to see things as we went along.
The train was going right across the country and there Freight is King, so rather than the freight pulling into a siding, we were the ones doing that . The freight trains were amazing, some had 2 containers on top of each other on a flat bed. There were 5 children , very well behaved, and they counted this train as it passed us and there 181 freight wagons!! Then another bit of a problem for me was that if we pulled in somewhere , they were basically sidings. There would be a platform sometimes, no coffee shop or anything and you had about 20 minutes or more to walk to the shops in the little towns. So the attendants would tell you you had an hour or whatever and people went off or just got off to have a walk round, but with a long drop to the ground I didnt dare try and go anywhere as couldnt do the walking and be sure of getting back in time.
Still it was a trip worth doing. They had an observation car, and so I spent most of my time there. I had taken my cashmere jumper , light and warm, and it was colder , as it was all glass, up there so people came and left as they felt too chilly, so that became my space. An amazing cross section of people, obviously not got the money to use the plane, so met all sorts.
Dont know if you know the Amish people, but they do not use any modern things, cars planes trains etc and dress very modestly etc. Well I thought I must be out of date or something as there were a group of people travelling who definitely looked Amish. So there were two ladies and the children who were counting together, and we got talking and I found out that they were not Amish , but Mennonites, who have quite a lot of similiarities with the Amish, but do obviously use the train. These were an established group who were going across country to greet and help a new group to start building a new colony. They also had a phone between them, but it was not for calling friends etc, but there was a lady who made videos about their way of life etc to encourage people to understand and perhaps join them. I later met a lady who was both the equivalent of our GP and also a farmer out in the midprairies. So I was glad that I had had the experience but if I get the chance to ever go again I would go to Vancouver and all the things that I liked the most were that side.
Well I have to get going , am due out, but will say a bit more about th e Athabasca glacier etc etc later. Things were a bit tough with all these bits and pieces, not the end of the world but problematical. However for me it was very positive as I found that I am still capable of sorting myself out and dealing with whatever comes or goes, which has been so cheering and uplifting after the last few months.
Whilst it may have been one of the toughest physical trips I have had mentally it put it all back in kilter. The pleasure of meeting new people, learning all sorts of new things and seeing somewhere new is worth all the hassle.
Have a good day folks whether it is going off to the wild blue yonder or down to the swimming pool.
Regards Madeleine
