Just got this PM from someone calling themselves Support1Grans -

‘We are writing to inform you that your account has been temporarily suspended due to content you uploaded that appears to potentially violate UK law. We take all legal matters very seriously to ensure a safe and compliant environment for all our users.

To address this issue and help prevent potential civil or criminal liabilities (which, in the UK, could include fines, imprisonment, and other penalties depending on the nature of the violation), we require you to immediately verify your identity. This is a crucial step to ensure your account's security and to comply with all legal requirements.’

I know for sure that I haven’t uploaded anything illegal and neither has my account been suspended so can only assume this is a nasty scammer trying to get members personal details.
Have blocked whoever it is but beware if you get a PM like this.

Maybe getting a message from someone else and opening it would make the bell go away?

I received two identical notices from this scammer .
I thought that it was genuine .
I spent some time wondering what I could have written .

I assume it means our emails have been hacked.

No, it doesn't necessarily mean that. Any GN member can send a Private Message to the Gransnet inbox of any other member, and anyone can join as a member (unless they have been banned). You get an automatic email from Gransnet whch says "A Gransnet member named XXXX has sent you a message" which you can read in your GN inbox - or not, if you don't want to.. There is a link at the top of all forum pages to your inbox, with a picture of a little bell beside it if you have a new message.

The sender only knows your Gransnet pseudomym, not your real name or your usual home email address. All they know about you is that you post on Gransnet under that pseudonym, and they can read on there what you have posted. Your home email address and other details are safe.

You should still report it to Gransnet at [email protected] so that they can send the writer packing and ban them.

If it was sent direct to your home email address, not via your Gransnet inbox, you should report it to yur email provider.

I regularly report email scams to: [email protected] - they acknowledge receipt with a standard email with more info.

Thank you Kelly 👍🏻

I’ve only been on about Ozzy and foot cream and dishcloths today. Wouldn’t have thought that stirred anybody up surely.

Hi all,

Thanks for alerting us to these spam PMs. We've banned this account by now and have deleted all of the PMs they'd sent out.

We're so sorry for any alarm that was caused here and we'd like to reassure you that your accounts are safe - the scammer would not have access to any of your account information.

If anyone attempted to view the link in the PM, we'd advise that you run a virus check just to be on the safe side.

Again, we're really sorry you were all contacted in this way.

Babs03 Thu 31-Jul-25 14:04:29

Ah I see someone already explained this.

woodenspoon Thu 31-Jul-25 14:04:22

You’re quite right. That’s what did happen. All now deleted.

Babs03 Thu 31-Jul-25 14:03:46

Yes but then my PMs get sent as emails as well, it doesn’t mean the person who PMs us has our email. I think Gransnet is set up this way. When I have befriended members they asked for my email even though our PMs come up as emails as well.
At least this is how I understand it.
🤨

woodenspoon Thu 31-Jul-25 14:02:58

Ah ok, yes thank you.

No it was an email not a PM Granny Gravy.

The other posters have had PM’s.

When you have a PM in your inbox you automatically get an email informing you, you can either access the PM through the email or go to your inbox on GN.

Oh woodenspoon, I think dishcloths & foot cream are both capable of being highly contentious topics of debate!
We can debate/argue about the least thing here on gransnet! 🤭

woodenspoon Thu 31-Jul-25 13:59:32

No it was an email not a PM Granny Gravy.

GrannyGravy13 Thu 31-Jul-25 13:58:52

GNHQ do not send a PM to contact GN members, they use email.

This is someone playing silly games.

Babs03 Thu 31-Jul-25 13:53:26

I assume it means our emails have been hacked.

Only if members gave personal details. Am assuming anyone can join Gransnet and send PMs to any member they choose.

woodenspoon Thu 31-Jul-25 13:51:30

Oh dear what a worry! What can we do?

Jaxjacky Thu 31-Jul-25 13:50:40

I assume it means our emails have been hacked.

Jaxjacky Thu 31-Jul-25 13:49:17

I got it and emailed a screenshot to admin

Oreo Thu 31-Jul-25 13:47:53

I haven’t got that message.

Have you reported it?

Tried to find a way to report it, how do I do that?

Charleygirl5 Thu 31-Jul-25 13:47:34

I received the same. I am afraid I just cancelled mine.
