What's in a name?

Have always disliked my name, it sounds old fashioned for someone my age.

However, I think it would make a good, second name.

Pity the parents of my two GD’s didn’t think of that!

I think Calendar Girl is a lovely name!

Now, about Muslims, I'm of two minds. On the one hand, it's good to be accepting and tolerant. On the other hand, it is a very misogynistic religion. So, should we be tolerant and accepting of unacceptance an intolerance?

To the people who fear that Muslims are taking over the country:

Next was Noah with 4382.
There were 591,072 live births in England and Wales.

4661 is less than 1% of 591,072

Nearly all Muslim boys have Mohammed in their first names.

Well, if I was going to be picky, I'd point out that Noah is a name from the Old Testament, not the New, so any worries about Bible Bashers ( usually referring to Christians ) can be laid aside.

Noah is top in Wales and Scotland, along with Olivia.

Can you imagine being a grandparent, spotting "Gransnet" as a forum you expect to be welcoming, but on arrival you see that you are not welcomed but treated as unwelcome on here and, by implication in your country, just because of your grandchild's given name?

I can't understand such thread being allowed under GN rules but perhaps, even on here, some are allowed to believe they are more equal than others.

Names do date. Mine hasn't been in the top 100 for years yet there were 5 in my school class.
When naming my DD, we took ages, wanting to avoid a pretty, girly or "baby" name. She didn't like her name but she does now she's an adult.

Mohamed is one of 20 names on the 2 lists. I thought the discussion was about. ALL of them, not just one.

I posted an entry near to the start talking about all the girls names, which I notice that no one picked up on, even though I set it up to be provocative.

This thread does reveal a latent racism among many GN members, which is not the same as saying people are racist, because I doubt if many are.

Not so long ago most English first names came from the Bible .
The same names being repeated in families again and again.
Now names are more diverse and unusual.

Mohammed is an extremely popular name amongst Muslims and their nanes are almost exclusively from the Koran .

Mohammed is a nice name. Why the fuss? There are worse things happening in the world.

I found a list of extinct girls names, I bet the names of many Gransnetters are on here. Fashions change so rapidly, and there’s a trend at the moment for parents to use unusual or made up names, which means no one British names is as prevalent as it used to be amongst newborns.
