What's in a name?

Concerning figures out today show that the most popular boy's name in the UK by some margin in 2024 was Mohammed. That underlines the concerns of so many people, surely.

It just means those names have not been given to any children born in the UK since 2014 PoliticsNerd, that’s all, no hidden connotations as far as I was concerned.

No, Casdon I didn't see an implication in what you said. I was just pointing out how cyclical names are. My apologies if it read differently.

Could you please explain why it’s so concerning?

Why do you think?

Greenfinch Fri 01-Aug-25 10:04:59

My children all have biblical names.

An interesting question to Christians, in Spain and South America Jesus is a favoured name for a baby boy, pronounced Hayzus I think.
Why isn’t it a favoured name in other Christian countries?

I think it's about how different cultures honour their God. In some they use the name in others it off limits. Just think of all the girls called Mary in the past though. Apparently, in 17th century Massachusetts, Puritans named half of all girls Sarah, Elizabeth or Mary for their perceived moral qualities.

We have a Moses in our family back in the mid 1800s who had siblings named George, Aaron, Boaz, Christianna and Ruth.

This really is nothing new.

I thought this thread was going to be about my username as I was picked on on another thread for calling myself Sparklefizz yet being a non-drinker. smile

I like the boys name Ernest.

Oh am not sure about that name, there’s often trouble with them😁

If that’s Heaven and there’s tea, am all for it.
It wouldn’t have done your DH’s heart any good tho would it?

Had a big operation earlier this year - the consultant was Dr Mohammed - I was, and am, enormously grateful for his skill.

Absolute applause to you for this response to this thread . I would say how many of these babies are now second third or more British babies and so what ?

PoliticsNerd Fri 01-Aug-25 09:32:37

Hardly "extinct" Cassdon. Names tend to be cyclical.

Our collection of names to chose from is becoming a lot more international generally, although the pronunciation is not always the same as the original. That's been going on in this country since the beginning of history. We have always been more likely to assimilate than fight.

DH was terrified as he was being anaesthetised for a major heart operation. He woke up to a man's voice saying "Hello. I'm Jesus. Would you like a cup of tea?"

I guess it's better than "My name's Lucifer. Are you warm enough?"

If not being concerned about a very small percentage of boys being called Mohammed is 'virtue signalling', what is being signalled by those who are upset by it?

Actually, it's not just boys. My son-in-law's sister's second name is Mohomed.

growstuff Fri 01-Aug-25 09:01:48

Unless you're signalling something else which has nothing to do with names.

growstuff I'll be concerned about what I'm concerned about. I'm entitled to my own opinions whether or not you or anyone else share them.

Well, I don't understand why you're concerned that Muslim parents often call their male children Mohammed. You're entitled to your opinion that fewer than 1% of English and Welsh children are called Mohammed, but it seems a strange thing to be concerned about.

Monica We must have chosen well because there are loads of powerful people with the same first names as my children (not sure it's done them much good).

Casdon That looks like a list of the girls in my class at secondary class. Glad I'm not extinct - yet!

I picked up on your girls' names post M0nica. Hence why I mentioned our struggle to find an un-pretty/baby name for DD.
I was also pleased to have a strong consonant grin

Mohamed is one of 20 names on the 2 lists. I thought the discussion was about. ALL of them, not just one.

I posted an entry near to the start talking about all the girls names, which I notice that no one picked up on, even though I set it up to be provocative.

This thread does reveal a latent racism among many GN members, which is not the same as saying people are racist, because I doubt if many are.

I found a list of extinct girls names, I bet the names of many Gransnetters are on here. Fashions change so rapidly, and there’s a trend at the moment for parents to use unusual or made up names, which means no one British names is as prevalent as it used to be amongst newborns.

The following names have been extinct since 1994;

1. Bertha
2. Beverley
3. Carol
4. Carole
5. Doreen
6. Gail
7. Gertrude
8. Gillian
9. Glenys
10. Glynis
11. Hilary
12. Jill
13. Kay
14. Kerry
15. Lesley
16. Lindsay
17. Lyndsey
18. Lynne
19. Lynsey
20. Mandy
21. Maureen
22. Muriel
23. Phyllis

Mohammed is a nice name. Why the fuss? There are worse things happening in the world.

Esmay Fri 01-Aug-25 08:15:49

Not so long ago most English first names came from the Bible .
The same names being repeated in families again and again.
Now names are more diverse and unusual.

Mohammed is an extremely popular name amongst Muslims and their nanes are almost exclusively from the Koran .
