I’ll never complain about spiders or daddy long legs again
A new species of giant stick insect has been discovered living in the rainforests of Queensland, Australia. The Acrophylla alta bug, which at 44 grams is the weight of a golf ball, is believed to be the country’s heaviest insect.

This is another reason I wouldn't go to Australia! Giant stick insects, deadly spiders in the loo and a constant diet of barbecues and Fosters lager wink

Really Nannan2 can't you see it's
just a light hearted bit of fun?
In real life conversation turns to trivia from time to time.
Life can't always be about the heavy stuff. smile

Notspaghetti - she ate him.

There is nothing like making ameal of a male spider. l bet they are vety, muscular fit and juicy with all that web building.

Plus, you get plenty of legs for extra cold snacks.

I bet she had at least half a dozen fresh flies for starters

Never was afraid of spiders until one bit my finger twice. I was on the way to put it out of the door. Wasn't too bad but felt like a wasp sting, went red and all better in a few days.
However OH has 2 very large red patches on the back of his leg. Had antibiotics and antihistamines tablets and ointment
GP says its false widow spider bites and will take a good 3 weeks to heal. He didn't feel it bite him though. It's painful and itchy now 10 days later

Oh dear, the look of that insect is enough to give me nightmares. Am scared of quite a few insects, spiders, beetles, daddy long legs, dragon flies, big moths, cicadas, etc.
If I saw that stick insect in my house I would have to leave the house until someone caught it and took it away.

“We”, thanks to son, had the school stick insect one summer holiday. It managed to escape a couple of times and was found loitering on the hallway wall then on the side of the fridge, looking “menacing” in the glow of the fridge light when I went in it get some milk out.
We picked privet for it and other bits of suitable stuff but I later on realised that for a couple of weeks I had in fact been feeding an actual stick🤨 absolutely no idea what happened to it.

Ha ha!

jojogogo Sun 03-Aug-25 17:18:59

This 22inch rat doesn’t look too good either ! 🐀

What a beautiful creature!

JaneJudge Sun 03-Aug-25 14:44:04

I think some type of thing that looks like a stick insect is poisonous to the skin but I can’t remember what they are called

Janlara Sun 03-Aug-25 14:33:45

I think you mean "bi" 😂

BlueBelle Sun 03-Aug-25 14:14:22

Why would anyone be frightened they are not an aggressive insect
I don’t know what changes you are talking about WhyDelilah I haven’t noticed the site getting any more staid !!!

we are down five stalwarts for one reason or another and the tone has changed with vying and jostling, this platform may be just too staid for you now

Iwish we had a net between this and the strident foul mouthed inane competitiveness of the other one

JaneJudge Sun 03-Aug-25 13:45:07

gosh it is big

I used to keep stick insects, but this one is massive in comparison.

Aldom Fri 01-Aug-25 18:40:32

My children kept stick insects too. They kept breeding and there were loads, some did escape. In the end my kids took them down the garden and let them go.

NotSpaghetti Fri 01-Aug-25 17:57:30

What a beautiful insect.

I wouldn’t worry too much about finding a male. I suspect that she is quite capable when the need arises. 😊

If you read the article they have no idea really what the male is like.
That's what I was thinking about.

Grandma70s Fri 01-Aug-25 17:08:27

They can’t hurt you, can they? I’d love to see one - though preferably not suddenly and unexpectedly.

My children used to keep stick insects. Not that big but from a tiny seed they grew the length of my palm.
They don’t need males, the females reproduce without mating. That’s parthenogenesis.

I used to have some, too. I shared a bedroom with my elder sister, who wasn’t too happy when they occasionally escaped…

It's amazing! Someone is holding it so why be afraid of it?

I don't know if the so-called person is alive, dead, or an AI hologram.

Aliens can trick you with their technology.

butterandjam Fri 01-Aug-25 16:59:56

NotSpaghetti

They haven't found a male yet BTW.

The little stick insects I kept as a child, did not require a male to reproduce . They ALL lay hundreds of fertile eggs.

Maybe they are all trans.
