Madeleine, this is an old thread.
Good morning Mick and all GN's on a slightly windy, greyish morning but with a hint of sun coming up.
I dont know if any of you go back to look at the days posts, I usually post in the morning and dont always get back to see more later, so just wanted to say I posted later yesterday that I had managed to go out to a little village thing and came back feeling calmer and wanted to thank everyone for their help and care, and how much it had helped on a day when I felt so alone and miserable. So here I am today, still in a lot of pain, and it is taking me ages to get going, but I am here and the best I can say is that things are looking a bit better than yesterday.
Plans for today are quite simple. I am going to enjoy my desert island discs and private passions and lots of other radio programmes, which can keep me company as I continue to wade through the shambles. I did make a beginning yesterday and already have a big bag of mostly paper for the recycling, so I could actually see a way to walk to my chair without falling over stuff today! I am being careful to rip off any address or information about me from any letters adverts or information leaflets from the hospital etc and they do not go into the bag. We have recently been warned about this from our local police group, who said they had found someone purporting to be a dustman collecting bags to go through for information. Well fortunately , from my background I have always been very careful to do this, as I am not risking people getting information from my rubbish. I also tend to rip up such letters and when I hear anything about wretched Trump trying to get his greedy paws on another country it gives me great strength to rip things up with him in mind!!
I have a feeling that I didnt send my sons card off in all the hassle of yesterday , but cant see it at the moment so must carefully go through a towering pile of papers , put to one side to deal with later. I will carefully take half off first, or the lot will fall and jumble up everything. While I am doing all this sorting I shall also be being kind to myself and making cups of coffee and thinking of something that I will really enjoy eating , both to have something to look forward to, and giving me something else to think of apart from what I am going to do with the dresser. But now I have calmed down somewhat I shall be able to make a list , and add names to it as I think who might want it. I cant take a photo of it yet as the top is all cleared but there are a variety of piles of papers, books and bits still on the lower shelf, and of course it is still surrounded by bags of bits from the top half. Still by tomorrow, I hope to have at least cleared all the bags if nothing else. I am treating myself like a small child with promises to go out somewhere tomorrow if I get this all sorted!! Anyway once again thanks to you all for your support yesterday. It was so good to feel that there was someone knowing how hard things were and being on my own does make days like that worse, so it is great to feel part of the fellowship of gransnet.
I wish we could all meet up one day, for a grand , put the faces to the names, and descend upon some unsuspecting hotel or town en masse and take over the place! Well perhaps we might manage a get together in more local areas, or if we are on holiday somewhere near other gransnetters. Anyway long may we be there for each other every morning.
Ah , the sun has just made a welcome appearance and things are looking brighter now. Might even put a bit of washing in too. Does it show my age when I feel slightly guilty about putting washing out on sunday? As a child I remember my mother having quite a routine of what jobs were done when. This was partly because with at that time 2 children , who came home from school for lunch, an electric copper in the outhouse, but no washing machine in the beginning , just the mangle etc and not many gadgets , it was quite a full time job keeping the house clean with in those days coal fires too, so you had to have some sort of routine to cope with things.
She usually but not always washed on monday. Part of the reason would be that we would have had a roast sunday dinner, so there would be cold meats and pickle, with a bit of salad and either jacket potatoes or some saute potatoes, which didnt need a lot of preparation, whist she battled with the mangle and hanging out clothes etc etc. So as I loved the pickles etc I was very happy with mondays dinner. Sometimes she would just make a big jam and lemon curd tart too. She would put raspberry or strawberry jam - home made , on one side and lemon curd on the other with twiddles of pastry across them. We could then choose to have either one or the other or a bit with both jam and lemon divided by the pastry bit. I thought it looked lovely and she would always warn us that it had just come out of the oven and not to eat it until it had cooled down a bit. Once I couldnt wait and learnt the hard way how hot jam burns your mouth!! Most of the women down the road would be doing the same, and the one thing that you didnt do, unless there was illness in the house , was put out washing on a sunday!
Sunday was seen as a day of rest, even if you were not church goers and only disorganised or slutty housewives needed to hang washing out on sunday. Well it wasnt a day of rest either for wome of course, with sunday dinner to prepare etc. People would go out into the vegetable garden to collect some home grown veg to go with the dinner , and so we could not have had fresher vegetables. It was usually our job to go and collect veg for mum, and I loved the runner beans and peas, not so keen on the boring cabbage and brussel sprouts in season. Ah a long time ago, and after sunday lunch we all listened to the radio for things like Round the Horn, and the Navy Lark. It just shows how good the actors where when you thing that Ronnie Barker and Lesley Phillips were on those programmes and then continued for many years on radio and tv. I miss the plays that they used to have on the radio. They were always worth listening to and you could get on with jobs as you listened. Suppose that is where I started the habit of listening and although much has altered I still enjoy radio 3 and 4 , learning new things every day, and having the chance to hear great concerts and orchestras that I couldnt affort to go to live.
Well Mick , hope you are having your quiet day and good to know you are on the mend.grandMattie, you sound as though you have set yourself a mammoth task with your new blocks. Hope it goes well. I am with you and not interested in the Bond books , never my cup of tea. You will be pleased to think it is september tomorrow and things getting back to school and jobs and people around. I hope it also means that you get some more help in the church. Even if they do not normally help you would have thought that one or two people could see you struggling and offer to help for once. I think they are rather taking you for granted and other people should step up and take a turn. Greyduster, hope the jam making goes well. I had a lovely victoria plum tree in my last garden and miss ifs bounty for jam and crumbles etc. Dear Susan56 so sorry to hear you are back in hospital. Hope they can improve matters for you and that you will soon be home. Glad you can now look at all the posts and see what we are up to. Kalu, know just what you mean, as you get involved in a job you forget to have a break. I am a great one to talk as I do just the same but one idea I did for a while and should start doing again is to have a timer that buzzes. I set it up for whatever so perhaps 30 minutes or 45, and when it buzzes you stop and have a rest. When things are going well you cannot believe you have been working nonstop for that length of time, but of course you then pay for it the next day. So although I am irritated by its buzzing it is a useful reminder .Hope your ankles improve today.
So wishing everyone a calm and peaceful sunday I shall now return to my sorting but not before making a welcome coffee , why not join me?
A very late Good Morning from Stockport which is damp and murky.
I think Storm Floris is on its way.
My S is taking his two boys 16 & 14 to N Wales tomorrow for a week, I hope it doesn’t affect them too much.
Sorry to hear you are in hospital Susan and hope you are soon home.
For the FGT’s everything crossed and kindest thoughts winging their way to Urmston.
The same thoughts go to everyone with worries/ problems whether health related or not.
A quiet day for me, no cooking today, plenty of salad etc in the fridge.
Sorry to hear you are poorly Susan; hope you are home soon.
Good morning everyone from a cloudy Northampton, rain expected later.
Yesterday turned out nice and sunny, and I had a lovely walk to and back from DS's house, 20 minutes each way which was just about right. DS was at work but the rest of the family were in, DGD1 doing A Level Maths homework, DGD2 listening to music, and their mum pottering in the kitchen. Gave the girls their holiday pocket money; they are all off to Gran Canaria tomorrow.
Was offered a glass of wine, and then DD and her DH arrived to collect their little dog and also take DS's dog, as they are having her while the family are away.
Sat and chatted for an hour or so, which was lovely.
Then walked home and cut the back grass and did a bit of garden pruning. DD-out-law messaged and phoned to make sure I'd got home ok, which I thought was lovely of her!
I also printed off the confirmation letter and other details of my newly booked holiday - I do like to have a hard copy.
No plans for today, read the weekend papers, catch up on some tv. A small gammon joint.to cook for dinner this evening.
Wishing all a pleasant day.
Morning all from a dull Ayrshire, I might make a few birthday cards today for the men in my family who have birthdays in autumn, after a quick scoot round with the hoover..enjoy your day.
Get well soon Susan. Thinking of the Fgts and all with mountains to climb. Safe travels to those on the move.
Off to cycle to nowhere before The Archers.
Have as good a day as possible everyone.
Good morning everyone,
I hope you are home soon, *Susan. 💐
I haven’t read through all the posts yet, just skimmed the first few as I’m going out soon, but I’ll come back later and catch up.
It’s brightening up a bit at the moment after early morning rain.
Take care.
Good morning from a damp northwest coast. A quiet day yesterday and that’s the plan for today too. My right hip aches in bed through the night and I have to change position frequently.
I’m watching Penmarric on YouTube from 1980 and enjoying it, although the acting etc is all a bit melodramatic.
I will try to finish my acrylic painting today, although I’m feeling rather allergic to it as it’s giving me problems…
Thoughts to Susan, good to hear your weight has stabilised Mick and I hope you all have the best day you can🌺
Good morning from Kent. It’s sunny at the moment but there are clouds!
My granddaughter is visiting later with her baby, my first great grandson. I’m biased, but he really is lovely. He is very happy and laid back and, at three months has just decided he knows who I am and that I deserve one of his smiles!
A friend visited yesterday. She has a problem with her cheekbone and no-one seems to know what it is or what’s causing it. Her next appointment isn’t for 8 weeks. She said, ‘I could be dead by then’! Getting appointments with doctors and/or hospitals is getting worse and worse here too, which is worrying. I dread to think how many lives will be lost due to this.
I hope all those who are likely to be affected by Floris will be safe and that their properties won’t be damaged. It must be frightening. I remember the 1987 hurricane, and I suppose it might be something like that, but hopefully not nearly as bad.
Keep safe everyone.
Good morning from the East Yorkshire countryside. It’s starting to brighten a little after a shower earlier.
I’m so sorry to read about your hospital admission Susan I wish you a speedy recovery and hope you will get home to your family soon 💐
Safe travels Ashcombe
Thoughts to you too FGT2 and your dear DH a very brave man.
Have a good day all.
Good morning from a grey and rainy NE.
Yesterday was a pleasant temperature with some sunshine so I went into the garden with the weed killer. Two of my neighbours were gardening too so we had a chat. We have all lived in the street for 54 years and are widows now.
DS says he will visit this afternoon when GD2 gets out of bed, she is a 15 year old who has had a busy week singing and dancing in a musical.
It is raining heavily now and is forecast to remain so into the afternoon.
Get well soon wishes to Susan.
Thoughts are with soop.
A virtual hug for FGT.
Fgt2 everything crossed for later this month
Good morning from a cloudy south coast where it has just started to rain. I don’t think we’re going to get much though. Nothing on the cards today other than a bit of ironing, lunch prep and then weeding between paving slabs at the front of my bungalow before it starts to get windy this afternoon.
Hope those of you further north don’t have any problems with storm Floris tomorrow.
Have a good Sunday.
Morning all from an autumnal looking West Oxfordshire.
Get well soon Susan.
We are taking granddaughter to a farmers Market later in a nearby village. Then, if it is windy enough, kite flying!
She enjoyed watching How to Train your Dragon at the cinema yesterday.
Her parents are currently wild camping in the Scottish highlands!
Have a good day.
Morning all grey day in the NE looking dull. Isn’t raining yet but think it’s on its way. Quiet day planned as off next week for well earned break. We are off to the lakes district mid week fingers crossed for the weather being ok. This will be my last week off before retiring at Christmas so I’ll make the most of it.. hope everyone is finding our summer pleasant but did notice the nights are cutting in a bit and only august. Hope you feel better soon Susan. Love to all.
Morning from grey skies in S Hants, no rain forecast until tomorrow, we may have some wind from Floris, no warnings though.
I hope you’re home soon Susan it all sounds rather rushed, I wish you a speedy recovery.
Safe journey tonight Ashcombe a new ship to explore.
Usual Sunday planned, grass needs a trim now it’s more green than brown, pots and baskets to water later and meat draw at tea time.
Have a pleasant day all.
🦩🦩
Good morning everyone from cloudy Lancashire. It’s raining heavily here.
Now on day 3 of antibiotics and feeling better. The antibiotics are making me drowsy and I have a metallic taste which is putting me off eating. MrB is making sure I eat, I have had a banana so far this morning.
Good to hear your health is better and weight stable Mick.
Sorry to read you’re in hospital Susan, hope you’re soon home
Safe journey to all travelling, the weather forecast is not good for the next few days.
A warm welcome to any new posters I may have missed.
Thinking of our poorly Grans and families, as always.
Have the best day you can everyone 🌹
Good morning all and it’s bright and sunny here in Essex.
I think our little corner will miss the worst of storm floris but I hope those of you in the path will stay safe.🙏.
Sorry to hear you are unwell Susan. Get better soon. 💐.
GG your boys will love Butlins. Our GC have been and enjoyed all the activities and ,as you say, you will enjoy seeing them having a great time.
Our no.2 son is off to Barbados on Tuesday to celebrate his 50th.
Safe and troublefree journey ‘home’ Ash. ⛴️.
My old friend and work colleague phoned yesterday afternoon. Dh was out with ds1 and I had just settled down with a cuppa to watch a Netflix drama. Nearly 2 hours later we arranged a meetup for September and I never did watch the drama.😉
We only see each other once a year as she goes off to New Zealand for 4 months every winter. .
We met in 1968 working in an office in London. She was just 16 and I was a worldly 18. I took her under my wing and she’s been there ever since.
Today ds1 is taking us out for coffee at the seaside. DIL is helping her dm who is poorly, so he’s spending time with us. He’s such a great chap, not to just us but to all his family.
Take care all , safe journeys, happy holidays and contented days. 🌼
Get well soon Susan 56. My daughter trained at RSH many years ago. I know the hospital very well.
My daughter and I will be in Shrewsbury on Wednesday and Thursday as I have sold my house and will be looking at six properties in Shrewsbury. Some very near RSH.
Thinking of you.
Good morning all from a wet Glasgow. We gave a yellow weather warning for tomorrow.😌
Susan, I'm so sorry to hear how unwell you are, wishing you a speedy recovery.💕
Yesterday was a very quiet day, apart from receiving five versions of the parish bulletin from the P,P., which totally messed up my morning.
I was on duty as sacristan last night and when the young, trainee sacristan (who is usually not at that Mass), appeared, I conscripted him to help out, it was a relief to have some help.
I shall, be glad when my new treatment starts and I hopefully start to feel better.
However his appearance meant there would be no sacristan to cover tonight and no-one available to step in.
The P,P has been in hospital, so I have managed to find parishioners to help out tonight, the P.P. is still quite weak. Nornally, I would have offered, but I am not well enough at the moment.
Today, DH will accompany me to buy compost, we have run out and I couldn't possibly carry it on my own. If it stops raining, I plan to potter in the garden.
Also, I need to do a small repair on a dress, that I bought on holiday. It was miles too long and I carefully took it up on the tier. Unfortunately it was trickier than I thought
and still too long and I had to unpick a bit. In the process, I made a small, nick in it. DH said, That is not like you to make a mistake like that,. I am making many like that these days!
Safe journey to your family Roses, I did that same journey as a student, with very little money. How naive and foolish I was, including nearly being arrested in Saltzburg for being down by the river at night. Aparently, the police thought we were ladies of the night, looking for business. 😱
I had a fabulous time.
You will be glad to be back home, Ash, have pleasant journey.
I wish you all the best Sunday possible.,
Good morning everyone from south Manchester where it’s dry but I can tell by the sky we too will have Floris rain later. No matter, we are confined to barracks these days through necessity. Himself is back on chemotherapy. He does the best he can while I stay anxious. He is due a scan mid month. A lot hinges on the result.
Oh Susan56 poor you. That admission sounded something of an emergency. A shock for you all by the sounds. I hope you are able to be discharged soon.
Good morning from a cloudy Cambridgeshire.
We had a good time at the races yesterday but not many winners. This morning DH is lawn bowling and I need to pop to the farm shop for a chicken to roast later and then washing and a bit of housework. Hopeful I can sit in the garden and read later. Our weather pattern recently seems to be cloudy most of the day and then sunny late afternoon and evening.
I’m sorry to hear you have been unwell Susan and hope you will soon be back home and feeling much better. Sending best wishes to all the poorly grans and hope everyone has the best day they can.
Good morning Mick and everyone from rainy Carlisle.
What a change from lovely, sunny yesterday!
I'll put up with this weather, it saves me giving my newly sown and now sprouting potatoes a soaking, but, needless to say, I'm far from looking forward to storm Floris tomorrow, we have a yellow warning here.
I was out early getting my paper after breakfast, going through the park which was quiet as usual at that time. Then it was just a gentle day of pottering and reading.
I started watching that old classic film The Wicker Man after dinner but, to me, it hadn't aged well and I found it just too silly so deleted it and watched recorded wildlife programmes instead.
This morning I woke with a really bad headache which started around 3am and disturbed my sleep until six when I gave in and got up. It's eased off but I think that's only temporary. It's going to be a quiet day here on the sofa! I've got my book to read but the print is rather small and I'm wishing it was on my Kindle. I don't put books on my Kindle that I want to pass on though, that's the downside of it.
I hope you soon get well and are back home Susan. Not good to find yourself suddenly in a hospital!
Have the best possible Sunday all of you.
