Tesco, shocking price hike

I’m a supermarket tart and am not loyal to any of them. But what irritates me more than I can say is how Waitrose have the word “only” by some of their prices as if we’re getting a massive bargain. I saw a leg of lamb priced at only £22! I notice that the donation box in supermarkets are very much emptier than they used to be.

I'm seldom in Tesco, not a big fan, but I'm always in our local Spar.

I used to buy cans of Monster/Ultra in there, a single can was £1.95, which I thought was reasonable, but I noticed recently, just as I was about to grab another, that they've now shot up to a whopping £2.25!

So now I buy them at the local newsagents, which only charge £1.75 and in Spar I also buy cans of Vimto Energy Zero, which are only £1.00 each!

One of my skinny sons is a very fussy eater and the pack of noodles he will eat have gone up to £6 for a packet of 5! A small jar of bobtail in our local shop (Morrisons) was £5!

What is bobtail please?

I am dreading going shopping after the next few weeks.Some of you may remember that I have been a type 1 diabetic for more than 70 years.I have coped with the diet for so long but have now been diagnosed as coeliac.
The thought of having to forego bread and biscuits etc and having to buy gluten free alternatives at three times the price fills me with dread.Even my Aldi unsweetened coffee sachets may contain gluten.
On top of all that my heart condition means no salt or very low salt and only one cup of caffeinated coffee a day.
The only bright spark is that I have been awarded attendance allowance so will be able to afford these inflated prices.

Have you looked on Coeliac UK? There is information on prescriptions for food and a push for reductions.

I never buy Ginsters pasties- they just aren't my thing although they seem cheap in price.

I have to admit to being a Tesco user- it is my local supermarket and I have tried buying things from local providers, markets etc but to be fair their stuff isn't as good as people make it out to be and it is often overpriced and goes soft if you don't use it the same day. Whereas, Tesco produce has always been better quality.

I once did a comparison shop with Aldi and the like but found the prices on the items I like (often not even available in Aldi or Lidl) didn't come out significantly different to what I was paying in Tesco.

If prices on basic food stuffs are going up, then this will be across the board and not just Tesco.

I can still do my weekly food shop for around £60 (less than a tenner a day) for two of us, although I admit to putting some items back because they have gone through the roof.

I hate to say but this is also a consequence of Brexit folks; I do recall people saying they didn't mind having pay more if we got our sovereignty back... so we just have to suck it up don't we?

I buy cereal for my DH. It is £3.60 a packet but you can get two for £5 at Asda.

The size of the packet is also getting smaller and smaller.

I use Aldi or Lidl for regular shopping and Morrisons for other things that I cannot buy in them. I was disappointed yesterday as Morrisons had NO organic live yoghurt! I was hoping to get yoghurt going but I’ll have to do it with dried bacteria.

I’ve decided that any pastry or treat goods are going to be made by me. If DH wants to buy other stuff her can. The cost of ready made food and staples just keep going up so I reckon homemade will be more cost effective again and better quality.

Pasties! I’m going to try to make some. As someone earlier pointed out they are a meal in themselves and even if I have to reduce the meat content and add beans instead it will just be better. I may just have to practice quite a lot!

I'm still reeling from the experience of Nestlè Coffee Mate jumping from 3.35 to 3.85 in a week, Sainsbury.

And a couple of weeks later it was grandiosely 'offered' at 3.45 with a Nectar card.

I don’t get these loyalty cards, why not just sell to Everyone at the proper price. I offered my card to a family, & promptly got told off. Week after a shopper had no card, same till woman got her own card out of her wallet, gave it to the shopper, said here use mine, I said no wonder you don’t want customers offering up their cards.. she didn’t know what to say.

Good advice Floradora but my point is that I shouldn’t need to. If the milk says 8th August why is it not lasting until then? I always keep it refrigerated and never used to have problems. Are they cutting corners or just being inefficient?

Not just supermarkets, I work in a small Newsagents, paper prices go up almost monthly. A bar of chocolate that used to be £1 not long ago is now £1.50. Every time we have a delivery all price marked items have increased

As there is so little difference between "cheap" fish and meat and the once "treat only" species, I am tending to go upmarket and paying the extra while maybe having them a little less often. (i.e. I am eating more risottos, pasta and scratch meals made from the bits and pieces in the fridge). I shop around. I restocked my freezer fish drawer recently with "sell by" smoked haddock and a couple of reasonably large mackerel, also "sell by", from Asda and today one Sea Bass from a pack of two, purchased from Aldi at a reasonable price (a bit over half the cost at Sainsbury's) will join them. Whatever happened to Coley (formerly known as Rock Salmon)? I preferred it to Cod but now it all seems to be Basa, that nasty catfish, as a Cod alternative.

I was looking for meat yesterday. To my amazement I found the belly pork strips I was looking at were priced higher per Kg than the leg of Pork! When did that happen? Belly pork is the cheap cut!

The best milk for long life I’ve found is lactose free, it’s not much more expensive than ordinary milk. We don’t drink much in my house, I take black coffee, and we are both mildly lactose intolerant - a 2 litre one will last us two weeks without going sour.

Aely as a child being brought up in a seaside town, we often had fish'n'chips (it once was a cheap meal) and Rock (salmon) my favourite fish, was very popular. It's not flakey like cod and has a soft bone. It seems to have a few various names...'Rig', 'Gurnet', 'Huss' and 'Rock' being amongst them. Now it's difficult to find, it's very different from cod or coley, sweet tasting, with a soft central bone...

I’m just back from Aldi having picked up a few essentials including milk. Their brochure has a page showing a basket of items costing £12.19 in Aldi but £19.20 in Tesco.

As I live within 300m of Aldi I rarely shop anywhere else. It is not worth the petrol to drive to a big supermarket. I also find the choices are overwhelming.
