Maybe it inspired you, made you laugh, or just hit at the right moment.

My grandad had a great one expressing positivity
‘It’s better than a slap across the belly with a wet fish’
One I like also a positive one is
Turn your face to the sun and the shadows will fall behind you’
and
‘If you always do what you’ve always done, you ll always get what you always got’

The smallest good deed is better than the best good intention.

"Hurt people hurt people."

This from poet Lemn Sissay. He is referencing the orphaned (or in care) and damaged children with whom he shared the institutions in which he grew up.

I think it is a very profound statement and reinforces the need for proper support to be available to young families for the long term benefit of us all.

"Life is a jest, and all things show it;
I thought so once, and now I know it."
John Gay's epitaph.

Thomas Bailey Aldrich. 11 November 1836-19 March 1907:

- Identity -

SOMEWHERE—in desolate wind-swept space—
In Twilight-land—in No-man's land—
Two hurrying Shapes met face to face,
And bade each other stand.

"And who are you?" cried one a-gape,
Shuddering in the gloaming light.
"I know not," said the second Shape,
"I only died last night"

HA HA HA! I love it!

When I was at school, they hammered poetry into our heads for years; I absolutely hated it.

It was all dark and grim and boring. And so were the poets. I had no idea what the teachers were waffling on about. Not once did they mention Thomas. I'd never heard of him!

It was only a few years ago that I first came across it on the internet. Read it for the first time.

My grandma used to say " Look after your belly and your back will provide for itself. I like that grin

"We must all face the choice between what is right and what is easy". Prof. Dumbledore to Harry Potter.

Without wishing to come over all religious, I think this has resonated down through the centuries and certainly resounds today more than ever.

"What does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul?"

Not sure I have this the right way round 'All will be well and all shall be well' Mother Julian of Norwich. I find it comforting.

The one I really dislike is 'it is what it is '.

Tomorrow a new day a fresh start.

My parents always said never be a borrowed or lender be .

No sayings but I treat people how I want to be treated.
Don't tell lies as you will be caught out.
If you want something save and make sacrifices to get what you want.

The phrase I hate is bank of mom and dad. You want work for it.

There's always a silver lining. My version is always find a positive from a negative .

GG13 that saying drives me mad it’s all you hear on social media but nobody lives by it
It’s certainly overegged nowadays

I’ve had two incidents in recent weeks where if you can’t say anything nice didn’t quite fit the bill.
Both were in the charity shop where I volunteer.
One involving I persistent shop lifter ( in a wheelchair where she hides the stolen items) and the other is an older man who has taken a shine to my manager and speaks to her in a very inappropriate way.
Nice words just wouldn’t have cut it in both these situations.
Both of them were left in no doubt what I thought of them🤬

Don't let tomorrow's cloud spoil today's sunshine.
I like this one as it reminds me not to fret over things that probably won't happen.

‘Do unto others as you would have them do unto you’ has stuck with me and I hope I do it too.

Mark Twain "I've had a lot of worries in my life, most of which never happened "

That’s one I really need to take to heart.

Pantglas2 Mon 04-Aug-25 07:48:16

All of these resonate and another one I rather like is “When people show you who they are, believe them”.

It applies to kindnesses as well as nastiness and fortunately I’ve come across more of the former than the latter.

The past is a place to learn from, not live in.
