Anyone take over counter reflux tabs liquid, which do you find suits you best having tried two different ppi’s both that haven’t suited me, and waiting for drs appointment I was wondering if anyone has had any joy with Gaviscon etc

I’m on Lansoprazole but I also get bottles of Pep-tac (mint) from the Doctors and apparently as its an algae I can more or less use what I want.

I couldn't get on with PPIs so use silicolgel a couple of times a day and it seems to work well with no side effects.

Peppermint capsules are really good too.

Dark chocolate (which I cannot resist) is a major problem. However, I keep a stock of any over-the-counter product that contains Esomeprazole. Wonder stuff!

And Sainsbury's Healthcare version is cheaper than the major branded products.

When you see your doctor, do ask him to carry out a test fir helicobacter pylori. 80% ofvus have this bacteria in our stomachs, which can be sorted with a course of antibiotics.

Gaviscon plus is the best.

icanhandthemback Wed 06-Aug-25 14:54:48

Actually, it is Gaviscon Advance. Do visit your Dr though to find out why you are suffering. You might find that Omeprazole is a far better option.

Red wine was a real trigger for me, still have a very occasional glass but symptoms are a lot better.

I find Pepto biamal brilliant but if you want to try something different, without side effects, have a look at an Iqoro.
www.iqoro.com/
I’ve been using it for over a year and I now rarely use ppi’s.
It is a device recognised by NICE and can be prescribed by your GP (UK)

The best solution I’ve found is yogurt drink. No drugs at all but you do have to be near the fridge! 😁 Calms it immediately. I like the plain (Biotiful organic kefir drink is my favourite) but fruit flavours work too.

Hmmm, not sure. Won't anything containing fruit aggravate the condition?

Kefir is not advised if you are immunosuppressed, but I find a glass of milk beneficial.

I use bisodol tablets when out and Peptobismol at home. Doc prescibed Omeprazol to take half hour before meals, but that does required remembering (LOL).
Milk of Magnesia is also good. Gaviscon makes me sick - literally throw up.
I find keeping away from pastry and biscuits helps
(Can you tell, I have had this for years :-)) but I have refused surgery - think it is a bit drastic.

On advice from the GP I keep Gaviscon Advance liquid in…….just in case. I know my AR triggers so it is easy to avoid an attack but the Gaviscon works a treat if I get caught out. And it’s useful for rest of the family too, just in case.

My DD went to the GP with acid reflux and vague digestive problems and was diagnosed with Coeliac Disease eventually.

Hi have you tried bicarbonate of soda- is natural and works so well

Mt61 Wed 06-Aug-25 16:59:00

I have just had a tuna sandwich, now I have chronic indigestion, just had a spoonful of gaviscon 🤮hate the stuff & lanzoprazole- can’t remember now which way round to take it, tablet first, then gaviscon or gaviscon, then tablet 😩

My mum swears by that in warm water

Ask dr to prescribe you peptac liquid. Very much like gavisgon but not as “chalky” very good stuff. Also use a wedge pillow on your bed, works wonders

Jaxjacky Wed 06-Aug-25 17:32:48

Lanzoprazole and similar take at least 2/3 days to work, often a week or more and are usually prescribed to be taken daily.

Whiff Wed 06-Aug-25 18:57:48

My doctor told me to take Gaviscon I have the double action one in mint . Liquid at home and tablets to take out with me . Aniseed tastes horrible and the fruit one tastes ok but not of fruit but both work on my acid reflux.

Whiff Wed 06-Aug-25 18:59:02

Lansoprazole made my low sodium levels even lower hence my GP telling me to use Gaviscon.
