a question about taxing your new second hand car

You can tax it on the 10th of August, for the full month from the 1st of August, paying for time before you owned the car.
The worst day to do it would obviously be the last day of the month!

Your new car has to be taxed so if you pick it up on say the 10th August you will in effect have to pay for the full month regardless.
We actually brought a new to us car last year around the 10th August we paid a full year's road tax which expired at the end of July this year so even though we did not pick up the car until the 10th we paid the full month of August. Hope this makes sense.

I don’t think you go to the PostOffice either, if you still have one of those, it’s all done online.
Either way you have to pay the full month whatever date you bought it.

When my DH changed his car recently, the dealer sorted out the road tax and also the refund on his old one, plus advising us the best time to do all this for maximum financial benefit.

We’ve used him for years, local, reliable, trustworthy, as he says, his reputation in the locality is very important to him and he looks after his ‘regulars’ particularly well.

There are some Post Offices where you can buy car tax, generally in towns, our village one doesn’t.

It can all be done on-line, depending on the car the time of month you pay it may not make that much difference.

We recently changed our car in the middle of the month, the car we bought was second hand. The garage did the tax online for us while we sat there. We paid by direct debit and the payment was taken from our account a couple of weeks later, although the tax covered from the beginning of the month (So we paid for time we didn't own the car).
We were sent a cheque by the DVLA for the refunded tax in respect of the old car which we paid for annually.

I've just done it, you pay the full amount no discount as you don't get a full month. Same when you sell it really as you don't get anything for the current month just from the first if the next month. When I get my rebate I'll know for sure.

I had to do it at the post office as the previous owner had it registered as a disability vehicle so I had to change that and pay at the post office.
