CariadAgain have you considered the reasons people steal( not really relevant to this discussion) ?Some steal out of desperation , mental health issues or just for excitement. This does not make them unintelligent.

I tend to think one of the first signs of intelligence is acting logically - ie "If I do x = I'll be clobbered one way or another y".

No "reason" (aka excuse) is a good one....if they don't have the sense to realise a. the victim might realise they're the culprit b. the victim might have a temper and a long memory and they've just gone on a mental list of "to be clocked one for it - strongly" if chance arises.

I think half this little town with a good grapevine probably knows exactly who the last thief I came across is and where he lives....

People who prey on the vulnerable are not worth consideration.

I am afraid I am very naughty I act very stupid and offer my bank number and reel off 16 random numbers and then ask do you want my password oh yes I then say P1 550 FF and leave them to it!

The podcast is called Scamsecrets on BBC Sounds. It looks into stuff just like this and is very enlightening.

I have just been listening to a podcast on this very issue. It is incredibly difficult to deal with and the scammers are getting more and more clever at fooling people.

I think more needs to be done-so keep reporting any issue that arises.

My opinion of someone's intelligence level always goes down from "average" to "thick as two short planks" if I can tell they're a thief.

In fact BT have had overseas call centres.

Thieves can and often are very intelligent.😊 You can’t generalise . Still rather rude though.

Now that one has got me pondering as to why anyone would have any consideration whatsoever for a thief LOL??? Errr...why....because if they had any and were a normal decent person = they wouldnt be a thief in the first place imo.

Grinning now at remembering a next door neighbour back along that invited me to a party in their house before I moved here. I didnt know them very well - but in I went to be polite and show willing and a guy there started chatting me up - with an entirely inappropriate start-up line of "My friend the thief.......".

He's probably wondering to this day why I switched off and walked away from him....as I was wondering why on earth he'd be friends with someone he knew to be a thief.

Why on earth would anyone be polite to a thief? I realised recently that someone that had been introduced to me by a (normal decent) friend of mine was indeed a thief. That was followed instantly by I slammed the shutters straight down on him and told my friend (who was mortified to find that he was one and apologised profusely for introducing him to me). She was pretty upset she hadnt realised he was...

I had a called on the landline just yesterday……..display showed a mobile number and as I’m waiting on news of a sick friend, naturally I answered.
It was a male with a very strong accent who announced that my “BitCoin Account had come to expiry and I needed to move my considerable wealth or I would lose all my investments.”
He asked for my bank details to enable him to transfer my investments……….that was the point where I told him that I knew it was a scam, I had his number and I was going to report him to the NCA fraud department. He didn’t like that and became extremely abusive at which point I cut the call and blocked the number.

Thieves can and often are very intelligent.😊 You can’t generalise . Still rather rude though.

We're talking about the thief......

Thieves are the ones that are thick - by definition.

We are not talking about the thread starter!!!

My parents went through a couple of years of similar threatening calls on their house phone .
They made my mother hysterical with fear .
She was convinced that she was going to be arrested for downloading pyrography on a computer which she didn't use and couldn't even see to use .
Unable to stop the calls -
I answered the phone exclusively and I was extremely irritating.I laughed and joked I spoke different languages .I deliberately
misunderstood what they said and finally within days they stopped .
I don't answer my mobile unless I recognise the number and if I do by mistake I employ the same tack .

I had a very similar one and reacted as you did. Having put down the phone she rang back and asked aggressively why I had cut her off. I said as before that I was not interested. She rang again but I ignored it. I don’t think she left a message though.

We still have a landline and never get these calls as we have set a a ‘call minder’.

It was very simple to do so you could check if your provider has a similar system.

We are with Talk Talk.
I expect most if not all of them do.

I don't have a landline any longer. I was totally fed up with all the scam calls.
DH and I decided to change broadband providers and do away with it. Anyone who wishes to actually speak to us calls our mobiles anyway.
