My garden has got a bit ragged due to illness etc.

Someone has quoted to:
- remove all the large plants that have sprung up around my small pond and replant with new rock plants round the edge.
- cut back the climbers that have gone a bit wild along my side fence with ruised bed beneath - may be 10 metres.
- put down a membrane on a very small area (c.6 feet by 4) and plant creeping thyme and blue star creeper.
- tidy up a 10 metre long very narrow path edge and remove the decorative stones so that it goes back to grass.
- sort out my pot garden on the gravel at the front of the house - there are probably 20 pots of varying sizes that need dead plants removed and replaced, top dressing and weeding.

He is quoting £425 for a day with 2 people.

How does that sound to you?

I paid 2 men 400 for relaying 32 patio slabs they here 2hr 30mins felt bit deflated after was i taken for a mug ???

Sadgrandma Sat 09-Aug-25 17:21:47

Sounds OK to me , I’d go for it. Better the devil you know…

crazyH Sat 09-Aug-25 14:01:26

Luckygirl that’s a very good quote. I paid £285 for a small front garden,(mostly paved) , weed the borders and lay membrane and bark ( I bought the bark)

It sounds like a lot to do in the time and I'd be happy with that quote. Presumably they are proper gardeners and know what they're doing when they cut back the climbers? They could do a lot of damage if they didn't do it well.

In the south east you pay £200 just for one chap to visit your house, if you are lucky enough to find someone willing to do so!

So it sounds good to me, but I appreciate that there will be different rates in different parts of the country.

Luckygirl3 Sat 09-Aug-25 13:47:04

I'll come back and let you know how it went!

Sara1954 Sat 09-Aug-25 12:03:11

Sounds very reasonable to me if you’re happy with their work, good gardeners are hard to come by, we had a brilliant chap for years, then he expanded and took on more staff, who weren’t very good, so I got another one, £45.00 an hour, and we could never see what he’d done.
Now we just get someone in for the big jobs, and do the rest ourselves.

Shelflife Sat 09-Aug-25 10:38:19

Sounds ok to me , I would settle for that.

Astitchintime Sat 09-Aug-25 08:39:08

If it makes the garden easier to maintain then it does a good investment to be honest. They have to provide transport, tools, ( all needing maintenance) pay their NI, have liability insurance, plus pay themselves a living wage.
Buy cheap - buy twice springs to mind.

Luckygirl3 Sat 09-Aug-25 08:28:50

Thank goodness my premium bonds came up trumps this month!

Luckygirl3 Sat 09-Aug-25 08:27:27

One is a woman!
But I have taken on board all your advice ... for which many thanks.
I will of course not pay till it is done.
It is a big job.

dragonfly46 Sat 09-Aug-25 07:47:35

I would say that is reasonable for 2 hardworking men.

ayse Sat 09-Aug-25 07:41:03

It seems pretty good value for money as they will be virtually redoing the garden. How much time and effort would it take you to do the same? Any doubts? As them for some local references and look at their gardens.

I’d just go ahead.

Chocolatelovinggran Sat 09-Aug-25 07:33:38

Bear in mind the cost incurred for removing the green waste. My local authority charges just under £100 for a van load.

BlueBelle Sat 09-Aug-25 07:17:24

Blimey that’s a lot of money if you ve already bought the plants but everyone else seems to think it’s good so I obviously live with a different level of money to use

escaped Sat 09-Aug-25 07:08:37

Sounds good to me, especially as you sort of know them and their work.

multicolourswapshop Sat 09-Aug-25 06:31:31

That’s about right but I’ve found someone recommended by my friend and he’s much cheaper

Allsorts Sat 09-Aug-25 06:28:17

Sounds good to me.

Aldom Sat 09-Aug-25 05:11:17

The quote sounds good to me.
They have a living to earn.
It's a lot of money for you to have to find though in order to maintain your garden. smile

GrannyRose15 Sat 09-Aug-25 00:14:05

Wish they lived near me. That sounds a tremendously reasonable price.

cornergran Fri 08-Aug-25 22:52:46

Seems reasonable enough lucky, you know them and their work, a real positive. The only thing I’d say, I’m sure you’d do this anyway, is to pay nothing until the task is completed and you're happy with the outcome. You’ll feel happier with your. garden when it’s done.

Usedtobeblonde Fri 08-Aug-25 22:44:53

My friend is currently paying £40 an hour for a gardener to tidy her garden and prune shrubs , of which she has quite a few.
Your quote seem a lot to me but apparently it is reasonable, below the going rate.

Georgesgran Fri 08-Aug-25 21:53:38

If there are 2 working an 8 hour day that’s £26.50 an hour each. Another way to look at it is the same as 1 man working 2 days?
A recent thread about the cost of gardeners found quite a few of us are paying more than that for regular maintenance.

As you’ve had them before and they’re good workers, I’d get them booked sharpish.

Grannybags Fri 08-Aug-25 21:53:11

Sounds like a bargain to me, especially as you know they work hard and do a good job

Oreo Fri 08-Aug-25 21:31:18

It’s a lot of work.
