Mattress toppers

I have a Devon Wool mattress topper.
It's been very successful on my previous bed, which was too hard and on my recently purchased mattress, which is just right. I still use the topper as it adds that bit extra comfort for my arthritic bones.

I wonder whst the recommendation for a suitable mattress would be if you have a wooden slatted bed base. Which couldnt be sprung edge.

I bought a new mattress from John Lewis, back when JL were a by-word for excellent service. The sales man politely enquired if I share a bed and then told me , he recommended couples should always lie on the mattress together before buying. But since DH was not present, "just tell me his size". He then fetched a colleague of matching height and weight and that's how I found myself in bed with a gentleman stranger in full public view.
He was right; great way to really test the support and comfort of a mattress.

I dont think her topper is a deep one. Magenta can you remember where you bought it?

I bought mine from ebay. I am afraid I can't remember the name of the trader. I ordered a 4" thick one with a cover.

We got round the heavy mattress problem by buying a zip-link bed. Two single mattresses to lift or turn.
Need a King size topper though as there's a dip where the mattresses join.

Note re buying new beds these days in the first place = with the way they've gone and changed the mattresses so = when I recently bought a new bed the thought hadnt occurred to me that the mattress would be noticeably heavier to heave up a bit to tuck a sheet edge underneath it.

Whoops! It is indeed noticeably heavier and I struggle with it. Might not matter too much if someone is buying a single bed - but my bed is the same width as my last one (ie 5' wide).

Yep....I wish the whole buying a bed bit was still the same as it used to be. I just wanted "same again" - ie a 5' wide soft mattress Myers bed - and with 4 drawers underneath the mattress. Couldnt even find a Myers bed - don't think they make them any more. Hadn't realised there's this funny extra layer thingie on top of the mattress - as that never existed back in the day.

I have been very pleased with my Dormeo Octaspring topper. It is the zoned one, but if buying again I would go for one which could be turned in all directions regularly. I also received a free Octaspring pillow which is the most comfortable ever.

No Clicketyclick it does not make us hot we find it extremely comfortable.

I was going to recommend the John Lewis one too! Very comfortable and a reasonably price but definitely need the extra deep sheets.

We use a Panda mattress topper in our camper van which makes the rock hard bed reasonably comfy.

The suggestion of trying a duvet to sleep on is a good one. And even though DD has a doublr bed she could use a single duvet which would stretch from edge to edge but not overhang and be cheaper.

I bought a not terribly thick one from Joh Lewis, can’t remember the brand, sorry. They have a good selection, though.

Was that one of those policies that if you’re not satisfied/don’t like it for whatever reason you can return the item ? I was thinking if you started off comfortable on the mattress for the first few months and now it’s become very uncomfortable perhaps it’s developed a fault. If that’s the case I’d definitely have a go at contacting them to complain. Surely there must be a manufacturer’s warranty in place for at least a year?

We recently bought the Ezysleep 4 inch thick mattress topper from Debenhams due to our mattress making my arthritic hip ache every night and preventing me from sleeping. I have had no pain since sleeping on this, and we have bought a second one for the mattress in our static caravan in North Wales.

Foden7 - I had no idea that some divan bases are sprung edge. My mattress is but there was no mention in the shop about the bases being the same.

Just give you my take on what happened to us
We had a rest assured base and Laura Ashley mattress worked great for years
Then I decided time for new mattress
I bought a silent night full headboard and divan base from Costco because I wanted it matching, I then purchased a Harrison Spinks from another shop like you waited 6 weeks for it.
When we put the mattress on the divan base and sat in it , it was like rock 😱🤷‍♀️
Couldn’t understand the mattress was expensive
Until we spoke to a bed person
The silentnight divan wasn’t sprung edge
Luckily Costco accept it back and we got a new sprung edge divan and full headboard from another shop. Fine now

ClicketyClick I think you would be justified in contacting the supplier if your mattress has suddenly become very uncomfortable after just months of use. It may have developed a fault.

If it was very expensive then presumably it’s from a reputable company who should have good customer service.

If you’re dreading going to bed then it’s clearly not fit for purpose within a very short period of time. I think you have grounds for complaint.

I use a duck down duvet (that was to heavy to sleep under) as a mattress topper and it works perfectly. Have a look at what is out there, duvets are generally cheaper than toppers.

I need a new one too. Look forward to recommendations.
