Welsh mistake Scottish Youth Group as Asylum Seekers

(38 Posts)

Residents in Wales mistook a Scottish Youth Group visiting a Summer camp as asylums seekers because they could not understand their accents! Everyone seems to be so paranoid these days. If a Welsh Person spoke in their first language or a Scottish person in theirs then of course we would not understand them but for goodness sake they were speaking in English. What a sad experience for these young people!

I don't think they met the Scouts, although I'm not absolutely sure.

Just some random racist bigot or two stirring up trouble and giving the good people of Newbridge a bad name.

The OP is rather misleading.

Not rather misleading but misleading. I am a resident in Wales
but I certainly didn’t mistake a Scottish youth group for Asylum seekers

To quote Paul Robeson “in Wales I can walk into any bar, I can’t in my own country” , he certainly couldn’t in England at that time, “room to let, no dogs, no blacks, no Irish “ .

I get your point! Just saying the accent is hard to understand for some people.

I can’t understand most Scottish accents on tv. Curiously I have no problem understanding English spoken with a Welsh accent or Irish accent.

Simply appalling.

When I first got with my DH, I use to have translate my mum & dads Glaswegian accent, & they both spoke with a soft accent.

I doubt if your DH thought your parents were child abusing asylum seekers. Having a different accent ;language or even skin colour does not excuse hate.

There is only one person on this thread referring to child abusing asylum seekers and that’s you growstuff

Why?

Because I'm the only one who's mentioned it! The numbskulls who posted abuse mentioned it - it's obvious to anyone that's the link they've made.

As it's been deleted, was it in the pubic domain?

As far as I know, it was only reported as "inappropriate and offensive" comments made online after a video was shared on Facebook last week.

I don't frequent such offensive groups on Facebook.

So it was just a few people posting bigoted untruths on social media and the whole area, indeed people of Wales, get labelled as racist.

We are all twp in Wales, obviously Allira.

The heading itself is quite inflammatory!

Thank you for the link Casdon

I expect that those responsible for any hate speech online will be prosecuted.

According to the '21 census, 13.8% of us identify as asian, British asian, african british african or british afro-carribean. That's roughly one in 7.

I say this because it is such a huge leap from seeing a minibus with a minority of white people, to "minibus of asylum seekers",that it's hard to believe anyone who wasn't racist would make that assumption.

I accept that the police using the site to train their dogs may have helped two & two to make six.But still.

Here is the story as covered by Wales Online.
www.walesonline.co.uk/news/wales-news/camping-teens-hit-racially-targeted-32248847
In summary, the youngsters were seen on a bus, the police had been seen at the scout camp earlier for unrelated dog handling training, and local scandal mongers misinterpreted, and posted inflammatory things on social media. I hope they get the book thrown at them.

GrannyGravy13 Tue 12-Aug-25 16:49:17

I haven’t seen those news item online or on the news, I can only comment on posts on this thread.

My first post was before growstuffs informative one.

My next post of 16.15.26 I say that I do not condone their behaviour.

Whatever I or anyone else think I stand by my comment that asylum seekers are an issue with some sections of the electorate

'Mistakes can happen'! Seriously, that's an excuse? Call it what it is blatant racism.

My first post was in response to the OP there was no mention of the ethnicity of these youngsters.

Why do you think it's being regarded as a "racially aggravated" incident?

I was responded to the OP

No mention of a racially aggravated incident in that, just locals not understanding their accents

I thought it’s a Scout Csmp

It is a Scout Activity camp.

I thought they were speaking with such strong Scottish accents they were thought to be foreigners.
However, there is absolutely no excuse for abuse.

Let's hope they don't hold a World Scout Jamboree there 😯

Reform have hopes for that area .

If everybody is the same (which I doubt), Reform will win hands down. It doesn't take much to create hysterical levels of hatred.

Well according to the Times they were mis-identified because they were staying at a camp site for migrants!!!

Wait fir the correction tomorrow in tiny print at the bottom of page 27.
