Do you like silence?

I was just wondering how many of you do things with no background noise simultaneously? So perhaps crafts, or cooking, or housework etc…with no radio, music or tv …or anything else going on.
When I was younger, there wasn’t much silence, with family and a busy life etc. Now, there could easily be, but in an odd way, I really want it and yet I’m frightened of it. I do live a quietish life but I think I’m worried that if I get used to it, the external world will eventually become too much, leading to me being intolerant of any noise at all…if that makes sense..

I like quiet. Never have any noise on when I am on my own. Can’t stand the continuous noise in shops & restaurants. Never put the radio on when in the car on my own. Worst thing is having speakers in your ears.
When D H has sports on the TV I usually leave the room.
I do enjoy music but on my terms . I would much rather hear natural sounds like birds, children playing, wind in the trees.

The only reason I don’t like silence is because it highlights my tinnitus, so the radio is usually on in the background.

Absolutely. I always have the radio on 24/7, usually ClassicFM or R3.
It helps damp down the buzzing in my head.

Yes, especially from Farage and Jenrik.

No I don’t like silence, I’m an over thinker and listen to something all the time to drown out the thoughts.
The only time I like it is when I’m going to Sleep, fortunately I drop off quickly.
I have tinnitus too, but since getting my hearings aids last year I barely hear it. I love that they’re Bluetooth so I can have something playing all day long.

I will "break" the silence for chosen things, otherwise, why have it on? Its a big "up" to living alone.... doing/listening to what I want when In want.

JamesandJon33 My sentiments exactly. DH puts radio on Alexa in kitchen during breakfast, I have to turn the volume right down even though it is music for our generation. I love it when he is out but sadly not so much lately due to health issues. I sometimes feel I could happily be a hermit.

yes, yes, and yes!!!!!!!.

I have tinnitus for 30 years but somehow learnt to by pass the tinnitus and listen to the silence. (the tinnitus is regular and if it increases through stress then relax and it goes back))

I am sitting in silence now. Typing this response on my Fire, s o no keyboard noise and listening to the sound of the wind in the trees and the occasional bird.

Thanks for the replies. It inspired me to sew in silence this afternoon and I enjoyed every moment of it.

I don’t consider it suffering Bellasnanna it’s just something that’s there and I can forget it a lot of the time only if I think about do I realise it’s still tinging away in the background

Norah Wed 13-Aug-25 17:12:04

Yes, I prefer silence.

Bellasnana Wed 13-Aug-25 16:56:27

I love silence but I also like a bit of music on while I get ready for the day. I listen to playlists on YouTube as I don’t have an Alexa and don’t like the radio.

I’m also shocked by the number of you suffering with tinnitus. 😞

I prefer to have the radio on especially when cooking (radio 2 usually) or knitting (radio 4, or a sounds drama).

OH prefers silence and finds noise distracting; radio off for him especially when doing a crossword. I had to put a tiny solar powered flower ornament away in a cupboard the other day because its clicking was distracting apparently.
Not quite sure how we have managed to stay married for 40+ years!

Visgir1 Wed 13-Aug-25 16:38:19

No I find it disconcerting. I always have music on the radio on.

Me too

I love silence, need silence and also need to be on my own now and then.

I long for silence . I am on a busy main road , constant 24hr traffic . Sirens etc . I never have total silence even with the double glazing . Recently spent 5 days in an isolated cottage . Oh the silence was so beautiful . Waking to silence apart from birds . It was wonderful

Whitewavemark2 Wed 13-Aug-25 16:04:09

Yes I do like silence.

Surprised at the amount of people suffering from tinnitus - you’d think something would have been found to cure it by now.

Skydancer Wed 13-Aug-25 15:36:56

I don't like silence. I like having the radio on. I like hearing nearby children playing and I like the sound of traffic.

NanKate Wed 13-Aug-25 15:29:11

We have 5 Alexas which play quietly most of the time. Also helps with my tinnitus.

Grannybags Wed 13-Aug-25 15:27:56

I have Radio 4 on in the background if I’m doing housework or cooking etc, unless my DH is around. He talks over it so I switch the radio off as I can’t switch him off! 😁

BlueBelle Wed 13-Aug-25 15:21:52

I dislike silence very much I like noise (nice noise preferably) silence to me is the morgue, the coffin, being dead or in a cell on my own, I never have silence, even at night I go to sleep to my radio, silence to me is a waste of time that needs filling As an only child I used to often play in quietness and now I fill it all the time even when I go swimming in the sea on my own I find someone to talk to if I m in a group and no one says anything I m uncomfortable so have to think of something to say I ve tried meditation and I just can’t do it I find it so boring (another tinnitus sufferer)

Woollywoman Wed 13-Aug-25 14:47:26

I love silence… Please don’t be afraid of it, Stillness - trust yourself as I think you will know when it is time to put the radio on to hear some voices/music, or head out into the world for a short while.

I have Tinnitus too, as so many do. I don't think of suffering from it, it's just there and luckily, mostly, I can zone it out. In fact, I only really hear it when I come across the word! smile

Flippin2 Wed 13-Aug-25 14:17:01
