Andrew Lownie's book came out today. I have yet to read it but apparently Andrew and Fergie are both shown in a very unfavourable light.

I can't help feeling sorry for Beatrice and Eugenie.

The title of this thread shows what market it is aimed at:

It’s Kincora, which was a boys home. Huge numbers of boys were mistreated and sexually abused there and all attempts to unmask the guilty have been suppressed. Mountbatten was one of the high-up figures whose name is regularly mentioned by those who suffered the abuse.

Why suppressed ? Andrew’s relationship with Epstein and
Virginia Giuffre was very public , Mountbatten died about 50
years ago

I couldn’t be stuffed reading about them - sooner read about Henry VII

But read a thread about a book you “couldn’t be stuffed to read”

It's alright to waste a few minutes here and there.

Dear old Dickie M doesn't come out of it all very well does he?

That would be the book about the Mountbattens.
I think anyone who does read Entitled: The Rise and Fall of the House of York will have quite a lot to think about; but each to their own.

I think Sarah is a very troubled and troubling person. We don't know the half of it all.
How they can profess "money troubles" is beyond me.

You will if you read the book! Troubled and troubling is correct.
I have almost finished it now, there is a lot of very detailed research and evidence from many sources. It certainly isn't a quick read.

If I knew of a better system than the RF I would say without hesitation that they should be replaced, but I don’t.
I think at this time ,better the devil you know, but I think they are all far from perfect, being where they are because of the dubious antics of their ancestors.

I respected and admired our late Queen.
I think Princess Anne is a chip of the old block.
I would leave it there.

I think better the devil you know, too.
The advantages are many.
The alternative doesn't bear thinking about.

The late Queen and Princess Anne have the same ancestors as their blood relatives

I met Katherine Duchess of Kent many times over several years, we volunteered for the same charity. I was told during the harsh winter of 1976 she was a volunteer with Meals on Wheels,

I know The King when Prince of Wales was dry stone walling in a farm in Wales during a foot and mouth outbreak

I suppose we don't know these people? They could do good, not just open a few fetes or launch a ship. They could really make a difference.

Catherine, I'm sure has her own story.

Um, I don't think it's just opening a few fetes or launching a ship.
I don't remember them opening fetes and ship launching has dwindled considerably in the UK over the years.

There's a bit more to the affairs of State than that.

Iam64 Sat 16-Aug-25 20:44:10

I’m d sure she does. I don’t expect she will ever tell it

I’ve long felt some sympathy for the RF, they don’t chose celebrity but grow up in a spotlight most of us would run a mile from. I’m the same age as Charles. I had ordinary, loving parents, grandparents and extended family. In our family, we children were cherished, protected and had firm consistent boundaries, lovingly and consistently maintained. My mum n dad were far from textbook perfect parents (I don’t know any of them )., but I’m. Certain I had a more emotionally secure childhood than Charles, Anne, Andrew or Edward.
Charles and Diana - nothing need be said, other than I’m sure they loved their children but t their marriage was not a safe space for them, much less children.
Catherine seems to me the best thing to happen to William or the RF
Sarah and Andrew would as my grannie would have said, spoil another couple
Awful people with a sense of entitlement so big, people could drown in it

I do not have any feeling for these over privileged people they might love corgis but they don’t have any feelings for the birds they keep just to shoot out the sky do they and William and Kate took their children to a shoot not long back !!!
If they gave some of their wealth and palaces to the country and to the poor I d have a LOT more respect for them
I would think Andrew has no pride left Sarah is so thick skinned I don’t think it would worry her in the least

The Royals are just human beings living in a goldfish bowl. Some of them act appallingly most of the time, some behave badly most of the time and others behave badly very occasionally. Getting rid of a whole institution based on some badly behave members over the centuries without having a better system in place (which I don't believe a Republic is) seems misplaced. We wouldn't have the Church of England or many other religions on that basis! We don't have to look up to them, we can make that choice for ourselves as it is not yet a legal requirement.
So Andrew swore at a workman. Perhaps he took lessons from his sister who is well known for her use of Anglo-Saxon language but who is still well thought about by the press. It strikes me as double standards.

To say nothing of the excesses of the Queen Mother and the enormous debts she left behind. Or Lord Mountbatten and the Kincarra (spelling?) Children's Home scandal. Or indeed our King who furnished the Bishop of Gloucester with a house and threatened to "chase off" the victim of his pedophilia. Time to get rid of this over privileged, above the law and archaic institution.

Agree with you, an "archaic institution". Some of the rf seem very nice like the Gloucesters, Sophie and old Duke of Kent but we were invaded in 1066 and the rf is self declared. They are over privileged and some are entitled. Andy swore at some workers doing their job the other day, it was in several papers. Why would he swear at people doing their work?

why would he swear at people doing their work
Because he’s a pig.
To him they ( and all of “us” ) are beneath contempt to him.

Anniebach Sat 16-Aug-25 15:29:51

Is William to be condemned for the actions of Henry 8 ?

The royal families across the ages have not been anything wonderful, why these entitled, wealthy and privileged people are put on a pedestal is beyond me.

I agree. Throughout history various royals have behaved appallingly and yet we are still supposed to look up to them.

OK, not all of them have behaved badly but isn't that the least we should expect of the royal highnesses.

Anniebach Sat 16-Aug-25 14:53:42

Agree Allira their lifestyle is put forward to mock their wealth , they can afforded private healthcare, can afford private
schools etc. in all honesty how many would truly like their lives, children’s A levels mocked, health treatment? When Catherine was so very ill the newspapers and social media were
.brutal, I still remember a post on GransNet when there were demands to know more, “I have the right to ask,and know what js wrong with her “

Anne, William, Catherine, Sophie, Edward, The Gloucesters
Duke of Kent are working members, the press choose to cover
the others I assume the public want to read of them .
Charities want them as patrons and it brings money in.
I am fed up of seeing the Yorks on social media and the press,
The Yorks are hanging onto their house because he signed lease some years ago, will the book show money making schemes , The King wants them out

And, of course, the King and Queen, way past retirement age but still doing their duty.

Yes, why bother with any other than the working members of the Royal Family? Just let them fade into obscurity.
