Cooler weather means my Birkenstock look a-likes have been put away and my new M&S trainers have come out!

It’s lovely wearing a pair of new springy trainers..

What have you got on your feet today?

Tenko Tue 19-Aug-25 17:39:02

Barefoot in the house, crocs for in the garden, sketchers trainers for walking the dog and Birkenstocks or fitflop sliders for going out . My nail varnish needs redoing but I’m waiting until nearer to my holiday .

These. I never go barefoot. We have two cats who occasionally leave feathered or furry gifts on the floor! I have some very smart sandals too which I wore for dinner on the river cruise.

Having seen that plantar fasciitis is a problem for a couple of people (apart from myself) I can advise that when I have unfortunately got it I have found that a chiropractor can usually help. Visiting one straight away at the onset of it can even result in maybe only one (possibly two) treatments. Just need to go ASAP!

Birkenstocks all year round indoors, just with thick socks in the winter.

Me too. The wool socks are always knitted by me but I have yet to tackle colourwork socks. Baggs are fabulous and obviously twice as warm with all the floats. You’ve inspired me to have a go Baggs!

Baggs

Baggs your socks are stunning! I had a great aunt who knitted socks but certainly not to that beautiful standard.

Thank you, dogs! This is another pair I knitted. Mad sock knitting is a challenge I set myself to help me deal with grief.

You are very talented I do think these are fabulous!

Recently I wore these to DD's wedding. I was amazed how comfy they were and they took me back to the 70s . I was surprised that platforms are back in fashion - mine certainly fulfilled the brief to wear something suitable for standing on grass! Mostly I'm barefoot or in my trusty black leather Strive flip-flops in the summer.

As an aside, I did laugh recently when I read about a new health fad called "grounding" and read a bit further - it's walking barefoot! 😂

Pretty shoes Witzend

My recently acquired smarter-than-usual shoes, from the granny shoe shop. Was surprised to find some that didn’t look at all granny-ish, not to me, anyway. Very comfortable.
The style is Robyn, in case anyone would like to know, and they come in IIRC 6 colours and 2 width fittings.

Worshipper boots??? Slipper boots!

I thought they might just be for wearing to church! 😁

If anyone has sandals that can accommodate thick orthotic insoles please show a picture of them and share the details of the make, etc.

Widerfit shoes, Ramblingrose.
The insoles are removable so you can insert your orthotics, using sticky-backed Velcro.

They might not be as pretty and delicate as some but they are fairly supportive and they have a huge choice.

Young feet are likely to be much better padded! Muscles and joints stronger.
I have flat feet and over-pronation too, nothing to do with age as it was first noticed when I was a small child. It's a ligament problem.
Endless exercises given by a chiropodist made no difference at all. Going barefoot is just not possible as I need orthotics.

If only I had lovely feet like some of you!

Ramblingrose22 Mon 18-Aug-25 22:43:43

Agree with Grandmafrench about the need for those with flat feet or overpronation to avoid walking barefoot.

I have flat feet and normally wear my trainers with orthotics, but to avoid having hot feet during recent hot spells I abandoned the trainers and wore sandals with bare feet inside for nearly a week to avoid my feet getting burning hot.

Bad idea, as I am now suffering from plantar fasciitis, which is unbelievably painful. I have no idea how long it will last and have been doing exercises for several days to loosen my calves.

If anyone has sandals that can accommodate thick orthotic insoles please show a picture of them and share the details of the make, etc.

Bare feet round the house at the moment worshipper boots in the colder months. I don't wear trainers. Call me old fashioned but I think they are clompy and ugly especially with a pretty dress. I suppose that when I was growing up, women's feet were small. Also, trainers irritate my Achilles tendons. I'm alternating the pictured shoes at the moment. The brown suede were from ASOS and the zebra print from M&S.

Grandmafrench Mon 18-Aug-25 22:05:43

Walking barefoot on a nice lawn or a sandy beach - nothing nicer. Indoors, on hard floors, wood, tiles, concrete is a risk I won't take. Plantar Fasciitis is very painful and limiting and often starts for someone with dropped arches, flat feet or overpronation, walking barefoot on very hard and unforgiving surfaces. Problems with pain in knees, hips and feet can then follow.

Young feet are likely to be much better padded! Muscles and joints stronger. The general advice is NEVER to wear any shoe or sandal which is completely flat. It's the flatness that causes the problems, especially forcing a bare foot against hard surfaces.

My everyday ( indoor and out) sandals have always been Birkenstocks, and clogs if I am working outside. Lots of very lightweight sandals to wear for a change but always with a padded/shaped insole and a raised sole. I had P.Fasciitis once - years ago - and that once was enough !!

@Suzysues I love my Hotter shoes, they are primarily made in the U.K. in Skelmersdale I believe. The quality is great and so comfortable from first wear. I have several pairs and can’t fault them.

arum Mon 18-Aug-25 20:52:45

Trekking sandals for cycling, gardening and at work. Otherwise, always barefoot until temps go below 5°C.

CanadianGran Mon 18-Aug-25 20:52:08

My knock-off birk style from a Canadian shop. I wear these as my house shoes until the weather gets cooler.

And you get a bonus shot of Jersey having a rest on her bench by the window.

lemsip Mon 18-Aug-25 20:51:19

sketchers go walk made my feet so hot I can't wear them.

sazz1 Mon 18-Aug-25 20:47:20

Socks and shoes today my old warn out comfy clarks unstructured shoes. Have 8 pairs of shoes but love these as they are really comfy. It's 19C today so no sandals

CanadianGran Mon 18-Aug-25 20:43:18

Baggs - love the socks, beautiful work! I have knit socks for myself, but find them a bit warm. I admit to liking socks and sandals; for years it was a no-no, but is more acceptable now!

TillyWhiz Mon 18-Aug-25 20:16:35

Need to wear my orthotic insoles all the time so M&S mens slippers in house (they don't fit in ladies), Merrell or Rieker sandals outside with insoles held in by stickyback Velcro

Cabbie21 Mon 18-Aug-25 20:14:39

My feet are always cold ( except when they are very hot!) and I once broke a toe, so I never go barefoot. I wear slippers indoors. Outside I wear Sketchers slip-ins, so comfortable. I get them from Boundary Mills, in the Pavers section. I have several pairs of sandals I can no longer wear. Recently I bought a pair of flat, white sandals but with filled in toes and they look nice and are reasonably comfortable.
