Shocked this is happening to women in 2025

I live in Southwark and just came across this tonight. A group of lesbians applied to the council for a small disused unit to run as a female-only community space. They offered to pay rent and charges and said they’d take any suitable unit.

The council refused purely because it would be single-sex. That decision is now going to court under the Equality Act.

I find it especially shocking as someone local. Women having to fight in court just to have one space of their own – when men’s and trans groups get support as a matter of course. It makes no sense to me.

I've never seen a case like it. Anyone else following this?

Ok. Third thread on this. I am gender critical but am wondering what is going on here.

Off topic, I know , but I was so pleased to see a transgender person on Mastermind today.

Did't know which one of these two boards was best to use. I have just seen there is already a main post.

Thank you. Is there a way to delete this post? I notice the main post has answered everything.

You’d have to contact HQ, to do that you click on the report tab on the grey bar above your post..

I don't think anything is 'going on'. The post on N&P has an ambiguous title - I only noticed it because of the thread in Chat, which pointed out that it is there.

Is this because in the past women have led fights against men-only clubs and spaces such as Working Men's Clubs, the Garrick and Bars in the stuffier Golf Clubs? The Authorities would then be accused of discrimination.
We cannot have it both ways, although I am aware some of the more unpleasant trans supporters target Lesbian gatherings.

Parsley3 Tue 19-Aug-25 10:16:54

Excellent point, eazybee. Men only spaces must also be allowed.

Galaxy Tue 19-Aug-25 10:21:21

Men only spaces are allowed, under the equality act, so for example you can have a mens health group or you can advertise for a male personal assistant. You can have an activity group aimed at fathers and their children and so on.

GrannyGravy13 Tue 19-Aug-25 10:24:56

I agree with men only spaces being protected.

I cannot see why women cannot have women only spaces protected.

Why is it men want to invade our space?

Parsley3 Tue 19-Aug-25 10:25:44

I take it that women are not challenging these spaces, Galaxy like the golf clubs etc were.

Galaxy Tue 19-Aug-25 10:36:51

I think there has been a bit of an attempt for women to access the 'men's shed' movement, nothing on the scale of the attempts by men to access womens spaces but still something that should be challenged.

eazybee Tue 19-Aug-25 11:13:34

Male-only spaced didn't bother me, but I thought jobs had to be available to both sexes. (I am trying to think of those that would be forbidden.)
The most important thing is that access to lavatories and changing rooms should be single sex and protected.

Galaxy Tue 19-Aug-25 11:21:20

Personal assistant jobs to those with disabilities are protected under the law, so for example it is fine to specify female only for someone who will be providing personal care.
M and S have also just clarified that their bra fitters will only be female.

We don’t need multiple threads on this do we.

Galaxy The Men's Shed do allow women to join.

Galaxy Tue 19-Aug-25 18:07:49

Some do after pressure from women to join, some are single sex from whst I can see. Men are entitled to a space with regard to mental health issues without women.

Maybe, maybe not. Threads take off or don't, and some people sort their reading of GN by forum, and others, like me, use 'Active Topics' and look for interesting titles. I didn't realise the N&P thread was about this issue or I would have looked at it as soon as I saw it. I was just responding to the idea that something might be going on.

Doodledog Tue 19-Aug-25 19:26:35

I think Men's Sheds should be able to be men only, in the same way that the WI should be women only.

Golf clubs and so on should not, particularly if they are used by workplaces as opportunities for networking that exclude women, or if 'Ladies' can only play off peak and are restricted to certain areas of the clubhouse.

It's very easy to see the difference, and understand why one sort of sex-based membership is acceptable and another not.

AGAA4 Tue 19-Aug-25 19:45:15

I hope those women win their case. I fully understand why a lesbian group would not want the possibility of transwomen gaining access.

Doodledog Tue 19-Aug-25 21:56:12

Absolutely. Given that most transwomen are heterosexual males, one wonders why they would want to join a group of women who are attracted to other women. The only reason I can think of is that they are autogynephiles who think that they 'pass' as women so would be attractive to lesbians, and this would be the ultimate AGP fantasy. The little matter of the fact that their having a penis males them unattractive to most lesbians seems to escape them, as does any respect for the women concerned.
