What glorious weather!

I woke this morning and sticking my nose out of the duvet that I was wrapped in, I realised that the room was really cool.

When I got up I put on a heavy cotton long sleeved top, my hands are cold and 2 of my fingers are showing the familiar signs of Raynaud syndrome. frsst time for several months.

This time last week we were on holiday by the sea in Suffolk. The weather was baking hot, so much so we had to limit how much time we spent on the beach. DH had to spend a couple of days in the cool of our accommodation because the heat aggravates his heart condition and it triggered our DGS's disautonomia. Several outings were curtailed because it was so hot.

You will realise by now why I am greetingthis cooler weather with enthusiasm and just waiting for the rain promised for the end of the week!

My son took his son to the beach yesterday. He said there were masses of rock pools, but nothing was living in them. They found one small crab and two shrimps. It sounds very much like the effect of the extreme temperatures. I read that the Bristol Channel is 20 degrees, which is too hot.

Here in north Manchester lawns are green but the borders are dry
The trees are positively autumnal, the blackberries ready to pick. It’s been so dry

I don't mind the heat but I do miss the rain. There's no grass anywhere, we haven't mown the lawn for 10 weeks & all the lovely open spaces around the village are straw / bare earth with only a few deep-rooted plants like yarrow and ragwort seemingly alive. Even the wildflower spaces all went over by mid-july.
And I worry about the crops & animals - & wildlife when it's so dry there's no overnight dew.

I love autumn but loathe winter so the longer it lasts the better.

leeds22 Thu 21-Aug-25 16:34:39

I've been loving this warm/hot weather but it has probably been cooler up here in the north than further south. Out walking on Tuesday my hands were purple in the cold (15 degrees) and drizzle. Looking forward to our holiday in Portugal next month, to prolong the summer.

Hope you enjoy your new home M0nica.

I’m grateful not to be in the 37° + of our holiday weeks, but I’d welcome the weather staying warmer for a while longer, instead of having to wear a long sleeved top or even a jumper in August.

Hil1910 Thu 21-Aug-25 16:13:10

I’m permanently cold so haven’t been overjoyed by the falling temperatures unfortunately. And I switched on the heating last night so I’m far from happy about increased energy costs. Looking to be an overseas holiday to get warmed up ready to face the winter

I've been feeling energetic and human again this week for the first time for a couple of months. I just can't deal with heat.

Good to know you have at last taken possession of your new home MOnica. Yes, I well remember how hot and humid it was at the time of your move. I'm relieved that as my house move approaches the temperature is cooler. An 'Indian Summer ' would be good. I like September and early October.

Allira Wed 20-Aug-25 21:28:25

😁
Well, you can pray for rain - but only overnight!

Hope you enjoy your new home.

We took possession of our hew home today. We will not be moving in full time for a while but it was so good because it was cool we could walk round the house and think and plan.

When we moved out of our previous home in early July at the peak of the heat wave it was awful. I could not keep up with the packing because of the heat and lots of stuff went into long term store instead of short term and vice versa.

Unpacking some kitchen stuff today I realised I had mugs plates and bowls for the camping stage while work takes place - but no cutlery, I also found a box containing a copy of the bible and the Book of Common Prayer. Do not ask me why, I haven't a clue - but that is what hot weather does to one.

My sort of weather today. Warm but no coat needed. I made a sudden decision to go out on a short visit to a special place, which I wouldn’t have done in the recent heat.
The gardens and the farmers need rain though.

Still warm-ish here but better than all the crazy heat, Autumn leaves all littering the road here.🍁🍁🍁🍁

The only joy in summer ending is that the Christmas season will begin soon 🎄🎄🎄

You’ll be in the firing line😂

I'm in Scotland. It has never been too hot but we have had near perfect weather. A little rain and a lot of sunshine.
The harvest has been brought in, there are still Fife raspberries in the shops and my hollyhocks are still flowering.

Iam64 Wed 20-Aug-25 19:30:07

We have a wedding end August with the marriage outdoors 🙏🏽

It’s not just grey and overcast here in north Manchester, it’s fleece weather

Visgir1 Wed 20-Aug-25 19:26:53

Rain not predicted here until week Thursday, thank goodness.
Hate it when it gets cooler, darker, such miserable weather. I'm so glad I'm off to Mexico in September.

Nannylovesshopping Wed 20-Aug-25 19:12:15

Noooooo do not want anyone to say it’s feeling autumnal, thoughts of Christmas, urgh!! Nights drawing in, can’t bear the thought of it, have loved the light and warmth of the sunshine of the last three months, utter bliss!!

whywhywhy Wed 20-Aug-25 13:17:00

I love the warm summer days but not the extreme heat and the scary browned grass which could trigger a fire.

But there is something about going out for a walk at the end of summer and the early days of autumn. That drop in temperature and the change in colours of the leaves. Golden lights mam used to call it. The smell of garden fires wafting silently on an evening breeze. Yes, I love this time of year.

Winter - brrrrrrr. Long dark nights that can be dark, wet, foggy and windy. Not my favourite time of year.
Then we go full circle and watch the snowdrops pushing through the soil.

Babs03 sometimes September and October can have blue skies, but the days are so much shorter.

I love the heat, summer clothes, seasonal salads and fruits along with the long warm, bright days, definitely my favourite season.

I disagree. September and October can be beautiful autumn months, with a backdrop of beautiful trees with many different coloured leaves, a mellow season when it is possible to breathe and relax. Going away for a break in the UK is far more doable and enjoyable.

keepingquiet Wed 20-Aug-25 12:52:00

The rain will be welcome but nothing but grey cloud and cool here.

I will miss the warm weather- I don't like the cold at all and I'm hoping for a little more sunshine soon.

Another 🌲 fan here.
I’d rather from the extreme of last week we still had about 25 with decent rain, preferably overnight, for a good week or more.
I too have Raynauds and don't relish the start of purple fingers again over the cooler months.

Casdon Wed 20-Aug-25 12:47:57

For me there is nothing at all glorious about gloom. Cool nights are okay, but I dislike grey days intensely.

Yes, bring it on! 🎄

September can be a beautifully warm though. 🤞 I'm keeping the summer clothes at the ready, but the white linens have been put away. 😥
