Yes they were cheap and accessible - they definitely broadened my knowledge.

Good little books.

I have recently sent a selection to DGS (age 9 and 7) in Australia.
They were thrilled - iSpy Cars, Car Marques, Flags, In a Supermarket etc. Many are transferable to life in other countries.

I don't remember I Spy books , but I recall Ladybird books .
If I went out with my mother she'd buy me one at one of the London stations .
I kept mine in pristine condition and I loved the illustrations .
I had Observer books on birds and wildflowers . I used the latter a great deal .
I was very keen on pressing flowers at an early age .
All the Ladybird books have mysteriously disappeared , but I still have the now very old Observer books .

I loved my I-Spy books. I had On the Road, In the Country, At the Seaside, On the Farm, and several more.

The Observers books were excellent for identifying trees and many other things. I loved dogs and learned every breed in the 50s. They’re all different now, mostly poodle crosses and even trees have changed as diseases have killed once-common species.
Now we have Google instead of handy little books.

I remember them well. As I recall, the little I-Spy book cost 6d and you were supposed to fill in different pages when you had observed whatever the book was about. For example there were books about the seaside, birds, London and many others.

Until 1960, the books were affiliated to the News Chronicle which folded so the Daily Mail took over.

The address for correspondence was:
Big Chief I-Spy
Wigwam-by-the-Water
4 Upper Thames Street
London EC4

I am not sure what the connection with Big Chiefs and Wigwams was.

Oh yes, I learnt about sea anemones from the Seashore one Jaxjacky.
I seem to remember that they were very reasonably priced which I think is probably not the case now.

I had the little Observer's books of birds and wildflowers. I don't remember I-Spy books.

Yes, I loved the I-Spy book of trees and the book of Dogs! Maybe because I could actually spot those! I think I had Castles as well and certainly a couple more.

Yes, I- Spy at the seashore was a favourite.

My knowledge of trees is very limited, silver birch and a weeping willow are about it! So I have just ordered an I-Spy book of Trees, which I will put in my bag and attempt to improve my knowledge.

Did you have I-Spy books as a child ?
