Yesterday’s flower show suffered from what felt like a summer’s worth of rain but was still busy and enjoyable and a tribute to British stoicism. Just frustrating to have the only wet Saturday for weeks.

Church in our own village this morning and the Sunday paper looks like a plan though dodging the predicted showers will be necessary. The garden is already looking less beige so I am not complaining.

Good morning from a brightish E E Essex, not sure we will get any rain today.

Absolutely nothing planned for today, other than roast pork later (6/7ish)

I shall enjoy the peace and quiet of a house empty of builders, kindle, coffee and probably biscuits on the sofa.

Wishing Mr.pantglas a very happy birthday 🥂🎂🥳🥞🫐

Swish bags Karmalady 👍

Enjoy your day 🙋‍♀️

Good morning from Shropshire.Dry at the moment.

We had a good visit with mum yesterday although she is struggling with her cast.We then went to Chester to the exhibition at the cathedral. We lit a candle for my niece and the assistant Dean prayed for her.

Today I have a follow up hospital appointment in Shrewsbury.

Wishing everyone the best day possible🦩🌻

Good morning from sunny Suffolk after a little rain overnight. DS and 2 DGC are coming this morning whilst 3rd DGC from the Ipswich tribe goes shopping for’school stuff’we are told.

DS is going to sort out some scratches all down the side of DH’s car. They are superficial and hopefully can be done without too much bother. DH was going to Dunwich with the little dog for a walk on the beach a few mornings ago and had to squeeze past a huge very badly packed delivery van. He couldn’t avoid a large low hanging rose from a garden and couldn’t wait as cars behind him would have been backing up on the turn off from the A12.

As farm machinery gets bigger every year and the single track lanes around here don’t,it can be quite difficult to avoid scrapes as you edge into the verges…..a small compensation for living in glorious countryside.

Hope all have the best day possible.

Your talk of washing made me smile madeleine. My Welsh ma in law would do laundry on a Sunday, fold it and hope to be the first to have it on the line on Monday morning. A bit of a local competition. Hope you can get through what you need to today.

Good morning from a much brighter Black Country, where it rained for quite a few hours from 3pm yesterday. The lawn looks better for it though.

A lovely family and friends get together at Brothers house for his 70th. Had to be a buffet indoors instead of the planned BBQ. A shame as their garden is spacious and absolutely stunning. SIL and brother worked so hard, there was a delicious array of food, where we were spoiled for choice.

No real plans today, I may ring my friend to see if she fancies a walk, not seen her for a while as she was in Florida for 3 weeks and only arrived back Tuesday.

So pleased to hear your DD is recovering well kitty and may be back home today.

Happy Birthday to MrPantglas wine

Good morning from a sunny and bright midlands.
madeleine45 - are you a typist? Your messages are so long. It would take me ages to type all that out.
I’m going to tidy the garden up before more rain.
Just started knitting a cardigan for myself then doing dinner.
Two granddaughters might come tomorrow until Tuesday. Haven’t seen them since march so I’m excited but a bit apprehensive. I’m estrangement from their mam, my daughter.
Hugs to all suffering 🤗🤗🤗

Good morning all

Bright sunshine at the moment with a slight breeze. It rained quite heavily last night which is good for the gardens.

Have an easy day today, Mick and I hope you feel a bit better.

Wishing everyone a pleasant Sunday.

Good Morning from Durham. There was a bit of drizzle last night, but another bright and breezy start today.
I thoroughly enjoyed yesterday’s empty - if you can call laundry, food shopping and dog walking empty?
Little Dog will get a late afternoon walk, as this evening, I’m meeting both DDs at a Chinese restaurant to celebrate DD2’s birthday and exchange gifts - mostly vouchers requested this year. DD1 will also get half birthday gifts, as there’s exactly four and s half years between them - yes, I know, we are mad!

Best wishes to all. X

Morning Mick, morning All from a dry corner of Somerset.

Some heavy showers yesterday, more to come it seems. The new iPad is usable, hooray, a couple of things to sort. Our internet speed is dire so it took a while, fuelled by several cups of tea and some paracetamol but we came to an understanding. I’m sure a much easier process with properly functioning eyes. I can do nothing about desperately needed reading glasses until the course of treatment is over.

Some ironing this morning, Mr C has put in a request for a wander out, some admin if I get around to it (doubt it), general faffing about otherwise.

Birthday wished to Mr Pantglas, the brunch sounds good.

Take it easy today mick. Good luck grandmabsmile. Go gently maryd.

Safe travels to all on the move. Have the best day you can everyone.

Good morning Mick and all GN's on a slightly windy, greyish morning but with a hint of sun coming up.

I dont know if any of you go back to look at the days posts, I usually post in the morning and dont always get back to see more later, so just wanted to say I posted later yesterday that I had managed to go out to a little village thing and came back feeling calmer and wanted to thank everyone for their help and care, and how much it had helped on a day when I felt so alone and miserable. So here I am today, still in a lot of pain, and it is taking me ages to get going, but I am here and the best I can say is that things are looking a bit better than yesterday.

Plans for today are quite simple. I am going to enjoy my desert island discs and private passions and lots of other radio programmes, which can keep me company as I continue to wade through the shambles. I did make a beginning yesterday and already have a big bag of mostly paper for the recycling, so I could actually see a way to walk to my chair without falling over stuff today! I am being careful to rip off any address or information about me from any letters adverts or information leaflets from the hospital etc and they do not go into the bag. We have recently been warned about this from our local police group, who said they had found someone purporting to be a dustman collecting bags to go through for information. Well fortunately , from my background I have always been very careful to do this, as I am not risking people getting information from my rubbish. I also tend to rip up such letters and when I hear anything about wretched Trump trying to get his greedy paws on another country it gives me great strength to rip things up with him in mind!!

I have a feeling that I didnt send my sons card off in all the hassle of yesterday , but cant see it at the moment so must carefully go through a towering pile of papers , put to one side to deal with later. I will carefully take half off first, or the lot will fall and jumble up everything. While I am doing all this sorting I shall also be being kind to myself and making cups of coffee and thinking of something that I will really enjoy eating , both to have something to look forward to, and giving me something else to think of apart from what I am going to do with the dresser. But now I have calmed down somewhat I shall be able to make a list , and add names to it as I think who might want it. I cant take a photo of it yet as the top is all cleared but there are a variety of piles of papers, books and bits still on the lower shelf, and of course it is still surrounded by bags of bits from the top half. Still by tomorrow, I hope to have at least cleared all the bags if nothing else. I am treating myself like a small child with promises to go out somewhere tomorrow if I get this all sorted!! Anyway once again thanks to you all for your support yesterday. It was so good to feel that there was someone knowing how hard things were and being on my own does make days like that worse, so it is great to feel part of the fellowship of gransnet.

I wish we could all meet up one day, for a grand , put the faces to the names, and descend upon some unsuspecting hotel or town en masse and take over the place! Well perhaps we might manage a get together in more local areas, or if we are on holiday somewhere near other gransnetters. Anyway long may we be there for each other every morning.

Ah , the sun has just made a welcome appearance and things are looking brighter now. Might even put a bit of washing in too. Does it show my age when I feel slightly guilty about putting washing out on sunday? As a child I remember my mother having quite a routine of what jobs were done when. This was partly because with at that time 2 children , who came home from school for lunch, an electric copper in the outhouse, but no washing machine in the beginning , just the mangle etc and not many gadgets , it was quite a full time job keeping the house clean with in those days coal fires too, so you had to have some sort of routine to cope with things.

She usually but not always washed on monday. Part of the reason would be that we would have had a roast sunday dinner, so there would be cold meats and pickle, with a bit of salad and either jacket potatoes or some saute potatoes, which didnt need a lot of preparation, whist she battled with the mangle and hanging out clothes etc etc. So as I loved the pickles etc I was very happy with mondays dinner. Sometimes she would just make a big jam and lemon curd tart too. She would put raspberry or strawberry jam - home made , on one side and lemon curd on the other with twiddles of pastry across them. We could then choose to have either one or the other or a bit with both jam and lemon divided by the pastry bit. I thought it looked lovely and she would always warn us that it had just come out of the oven and not to eat it until it had cooled down a bit. Once I couldnt wait and learnt the hard way how hot jam burns your mouth!! Most of the women down the road would be doing the same, and the one thing that you didnt do, unless there was illness in the house , was put out washing on a sunday!

Sunday was seen as a day of rest, even if you were not church goers and only disorganised or slutty housewives needed to hang washing out on sunday. Well it wasnt a day of rest either for wome of course, with sunday dinner to prepare etc. People would go out into the vegetable garden to collect some home grown veg to go with the dinner , and so we could not have had fresher vegetables. It was usually our job to go and collect veg for mum, and I loved the runner beans and peas, not so keen on the boring cabbage and brussel sprouts in season. Ah a long time ago, and after sunday lunch we all listened to the radio for things like Round the Horn, and the Navy Lark. It just shows how good the actors where when you thing that Ronnie Barker and Lesley Phillips were on those programmes and then continued for many years on radio and tv. I miss the plays that they used to have on the radio. They were always worth listening to and you could get on with jobs as you listened. Suppose that is where I started the habit of listening and although much has altered I still enjoy radio 3 and 4 , learning new things every day, and having the chance to hear great concerts and orchestras that I couldnt affort to go to live.

Well Mick , hope you are having your quiet day and good to know you are on the mend.grandMattie, you sound as though you have set yourself a mammoth task with your new blocks. Hope it goes well. I am with you and not interested in the Bond books , never my cup of tea. You will be pleased to think it is september tomorrow and things getting back to school and jobs and people around. I hope it also means that you get some more help in the church. Even if they do not normally help you would have thought that one or two people could see you struggling and offer to help for once. I think they are rather taking you for granted and other people should step up and take a turn. Greyduster, hope the jam making goes well. I had a lovely victoria plum tree in my last garden and miss ifs bounty for jam and crumbles etc. Dear Susan56 so sorry to hear you are back in hospital. Hope they can improve matters for you and that you will soon be home. Glad you can now look at all the posts and see what we are up to. Kalu, know just what you mean, as you get involved in a job you forget to have a break. I am a great one to talk as I do just the same but one idea I did for a while and should start doing again is to have a timer that buzzes. I set it up for whatever so perhaps 30 minutes or 45, and when it buzzes you stop and have a rest. When things are going well you cannot believe you have been working nonstop for that length of time, but of course you then pay for it the next day. So although I am irritated by its buzzing it is a useful reminder .Hope your ankles improve today.

So wishing everyone a calm and peaceful sunday I shall now return to my sorting but not before making a welcome coffee , why not join me?

Good morning all from Glasgow, where the sun has just peeped through the clouds.

We had an enjoyable day for our indoor barbecue at Dollie's. DS called outside, while we sat inside with the patio doors open.
DS is an excellent cook and I managed to eat a little more than normal.
We came home to a blob of wet plaster on the kitchen floor!😱

I am looking forward to an empty this afternoon. DH is going to watch the football at DD's, which I didn't know about.
He said I should know, when the important games are on.
Who actually cares, let alone bother to check dates.🤣

DH has offered to take me to Mass (no working), I am going to see how I feel, when I get up. This bone numbing fatigue is getting me down.

Wishing you all a happy Sunday.

Jaxjacky Sun 31-Aug-25 07:48:28

Morning, it was clear here in S Hants, now clouding over, we had copious amounts of steady rain yesterday.
Friends coming for a late lunch, I’ve made sauce ready for lasagne, they’re bringing a pud, it’ll be a good catch up.
Happy Birthday MrPG 🎂
Happy travels to brook and I hope the FGT’s have the best family catch up.

Good morning everyone from a bright and sunny 🌞 Northampton. Some rain showers forecast later, but hopefully not while I am at the rugby.

Yesterday's England match was a foregone conclusion, England triumphing over Samoa 92-3. An amazing atmosphere, lots of little girls there.decked out in England kit, not to mention their mums and grandmas! I had quite a good seat, and was sheltered from the persistent drizzle. I was lucky enough to see the England team arrive at the stadium; have posted photos of yesterday in the Sports forum. DD and DS-in-law, plus a friend of theirs met me in the bar.before the match, (where else?). Later this morning I am off to the next world cup match, Ireland v Spain; haven't decided who to support, probably Spain.

Just about to have two slices of toast, then need to prepare a hotpot for the slow cooker.

Wishing all a pleasant day. Now to go back and read everyone's happenings!

Gingster Sun 31-Aug-25 07:38:27

Good morning all and it’s a glorious start to the day here on the Suffolk coast. Despite bad weather warnings, we’ve had mostly warm, pleasant days, breezy but very little rain.

Had a lovely long walk along the beach with little pooch, late afternoon and didn’t see a soul. That’s the beauty of our part of the coast, as touristy villages both ways would probably be heaving.

Dh took himself off to watch a local football match. I offered to take and pick up but he was adamant he wanted to do it himself 👍. All went well and he really enjoyed it.🙏.
I’m just pleased he’s wanting to do things.

Our friends are staying just up the coast from here so we may meet up today, although they have family staying for the weekend, so probably tomorrow would be better.

More pottering and weeding today, it isn’t a chore here as we can sit and watch the sea and have a cuppa when we tire, before getting going again.

Take care all and thoughts with all who are feeling ‘not 100%’.

Good morning. We are now in our holiday house in Salcombe. A very wet drive down but by the time we had unpacked it was pleasant enough for a walk into the main town. It’s very steep so tested my muscles!
I think it is dry at the moment with the sun trying to peep through. Don’t know what our plans are for today, we’ll decide once DDs are up.
Wishing all a good day.

Redcar Sun 31-Aug-25 07:18:12

Good morning everyone from mid Essex. It’s dry and sunny and I think it will be a nice day. Yesterday was bright and breezy until the evening when we had some rain.
I had a disturbed night, coughing a lot, I seem to have a cold! Not sure where it came from but I’m not feeling very bright. I need to be better by Wednesday as I’m meeting some Australian cousins for lunch. They’re in London for a few days, then heading off to tour Scotland and the north of England.

DD1 and family came over in the morning yesterday and sorted out some of her dad’s camera equipment.
DD2 probably won’t be over today as she needs to get shoes for littlest and a waterproof coat for the 7 year old. Probably a visit to Westfield.

llfl I hope your friend behaves herself at lunch today. grandmabatty I hope your grandsons behave themselves for you for the next few days.

Thinking of those who are struggling for any reason. Have the best day possible everyone.

luluaugust Sun 31-Aug-25 07:16:01

Good morning from a damp W Kent. A quiet day today with a chat with DB and starting to pack for a short break away.
Best wishes

kittylester Sun 31-Aug-25 07:03:54

Good morning all from a brightening North Leicestershire. We too had lots of rain last night and it felt quite autumnal - lights on and curtains drawn by about 7.30.

We saw DD1 yesterday. She is doing really well and may go home today.

Today, DH and DS one are off to their first match of the season so a fry up is required before they depart.

I will make a Swiss cheese bake for supper and some apple turnovers to use up the large amount of apples given to us by a friend.

Have the best day possible everyone.

Ladyleftfieldlover Sun 31-Aug-25 06:59:19

Morning all from West Oxfordshire. It looks damp and there was copious amounts of rain yesterday. More is forecast today.

Church this morning at my favourite church in the Benefice.

Then I’m out for lunch with my old friend who sometimes behaves badly in restaurants. We have known each other for a very long time but I sometimes wonder if this friendship has run its course . We live some distance apart and meet up half way. She used to be an academic based in Oxford so it was easier to meet up. She is a very interesting person but can be very difficult.

Have a good day. I hope the FGT2S have a wonderful time visiting their family.

Grandmabatty Sun 31-Aug-25 06:53:09

Good friend* that should read. Clumsy fingers

Grandmabatty Sun 31-Aug-25 06:52:24

Good morning all from Polmont where it's currently 12° and bright. Yesterday was wet on and off. Happy birthday to your DH Pantglas.
Yesterday I had a lovely catch up and breakfast with a dry. Her daughter came too and is good company. I bought the magic bubbles for the boys. Dd messaged a few times from Majorca, with photos of brilliant blue skies. Back home, I pottered about. My brother arrived but didn't stay long (thankfully) and we sorted what needed doing. Then Tesco delivered. I decided to have a curry for dinner and finally got the issue I've had with their website sorted. It was delivered later. So a very pleasant day.
Today prepare to repel boarders! The boys are being dropped off by their other grandparents at some point and I'll have them until Tuesday. I will be taking them to school/nursery tomorrow and Tuesday though, DD was at pains to tell me. 😀 Apparently I have the easier shift. The painter will come over for his money this afternoon too. I'm going to make steak casserole in the slow cooker and put a lot away in the freezer. Have a good day all

grandMattie Sun 31-Aug-25 06:29:40

A commission, allsorts. A cheerful change from the grey/black/white one im making for DGS.

RosesandLilac Sun 31-Aug-25 06:22:13

Good morning from south Glos where we’ve had a reasonable amount of rain at last!👏 I’m hoping there’s much more to come.
I had a lovely long WhatsApp chat with DS yesterday, he’s home alone until Tuesday when DDIL and the DGCs will return. They’re having their house reconfigured, major works but it’s going well. I heard all about DGC1 and DS’s cycling adventures over the summer, they covered over 900 miles and had a great time. Such wonderful memories for the 12 year old.
DS starts a new job in two weeks, he’s been headhunted and is looking forward to getting stuck into something new.
Nothing special planned for today, just another quiet one.
Wishing you all a pleasant day 🌹

Greyduster Sun 31-Aug-25 06:13:48

Good morning, Michael and all GNs. A soft sunrise in South Yorkshire this morning and a cloudless sky, but we’re in for a mixed day. When I came to bed last night it was absolutely pouring down - the most rain we’ve had for a long time. DD and the menfolk are coming over today for a late lunch so I shall have plenty of time to put it all together today. I will also make cream cheese frosting for the Guinness and chocolate cake I made yesterday.
Take it easy today, Mick.
Have the best day you can, folks.
