Induction hob

I’m thinking of buying an induction hob but have been told that you should not have cutlery stored underneath the hob. All my kitchen gadgets and cutlery are stored in a large drawer underneath where the hob will be fitted. Has anyone heard of this before I purchase one.

I love my induction hob! Incredibly easy to clean, just a quick wipe and it's clean. Nothing burns on it. It is so much quicker than any other hob that I have had.

You do need to make sure you have the correct pans for it otherwise it won't work. My stainless pans were fine, my frying pan wasn't. so had to buy a new one.

I love my induction hob. It’s so quick to heat up and just wipe with kitchen roll to keep clean.

I love that the whole area is functional so that no matter what size of pot/griddle you put on it that’s the area that heats up.

Also that I can’t accidentally leave it on. Pot gone, hob switches off. It turns itself off if something boils over too much and also if something boils dry and the base of the pot begins to overheat. I’m not a dedicated cook and am given to wandering off in the garden and forgetting the kitchen🙄😱

The cutlery drawer is right underneath. It’s fine but it does need to be installed with the correct insulating board underneath.

You can’t have one with a pacemaker which I did have to think about a bit. My post Covid heart troubles seem to have sorted themselves out though, so I’m glad I made the choice.

I have had an induction hob for years and the cutlery drawer is underneath with no problems at all. Perhaps a modern induction hob is somehow different though. As for cleaning, a wipe with detergent and a soft cloth is all you need. I don't regret getting this hob after having had a gas range that I had to dismantle for cleaning.

Induction hobs are incredibly easy to clean. Just wipe them over after use. They are extremely quick and most pans now are suited to them.
I wouldn't be without mine.

Our kitchen utensil draw is directly under our induction hob and we haven't had any problems with this. The draw seems to be the same temperature as before.

Thank you Greyduster that really does sound easy, especially compared with other types of hob.

I have had induction hobs for 20 years and always stored cutlery below, no problems at all.

Greyduster Wed 03-Sept-25 05:50:45

Warm water and washing up liquid is all you need. Dry with a microfibre cloth but it’s not strictly necessary. Ridiculously easy compared with other hobs.

Another question for everyone who has an induction hob.
You all say how easy they are to clean.
Please can you advise me on suitable cleaning products.

I have knives and other metal utensils in a drawer underneath my Neff hob and it’s never been a problem. So has my DD who keeps her cutlery directly underneath her hob. I’ve never heard of this.

I have my cutlery drawer under my induction hob and I’ve never had a problem.

Thank you Retread for the magnet tip. Very helpful to know. Now I must look for my magnet.
All very reassuring to hear that no one has had a problem with the cutlery drawer.

My cutlery drawer is under my induction hob and has been for 15 years with no problem.

Same here, no problems at all.

Both my lads have a cutlery drawer beneath induction hobs. The drawers overheating has never been an issue.

I’m another who would never go back to any other type of hob. I saw my first one twenty years ago (friend had a two zone inset IH to supplement an AGA cooker) and I was immediately smitten.

Not all stainless steel pots and pans are good for an induction hob - if a magnet sticks to them, they work - quoting from memory! I've learnt now to read on the bottom of everything whether it is "Suitable for Induction Hobs".

Aldom Tue 02-Sept-25 20:43:12

Is it ok to use pans made of stainless steel on an induction hob?
Thought I would ask as there are people here who have used IH for a good while.

I too have a utensils drawer beneath my induction hob, and a cutlery drawer beneath that. I haven’t noticed any heat in the drawers. Mine is a Neff.

A side issue - if you are buying one look carefully at the controls and try a few out to find one that suits you. We have three hobs in our family and they are all different. Mine has a magnetic twirly knob which is ok once you get used to it but we misplaced it for a couple of days which was a pain! (It had attached itself to the base of a passing baking tray)

I have metal kitchen "accessories" (e.g. serving spoons, potato masher, large knives, tin openers) immediately below the hob and never noticed anything amiss at all. We've had it ten years and it's still like new. I wouldn't consider any other type of hob now, after a lifetime of gas. No greasy, hard-to-clean bits, almost instant heat (only where it's needed), sleek-looking as well.

Yes, they are a no-go if you have a pacemaker, and you must make sure your pans are induction-friendly (most are now, not so ten years ago).

I hadn't heard about not having knives below an induction hob. I have a pots and pan drawer below mine. I've had induction hobs for about 25 years now. Before I was a devotee of gas hobs, but since having my first induction hob, I wouldn't want to go back. As others have stated here, very quick to heat and easy to clean.

Visgir1 Tue 02-Sept-25 19:30:25

Also, you can't have one of these if you have a Pacemaker...

Oops I have no idea where the grin emoji came from, that word is “or”.

I have a cutlery drawer directly under my induction hob, with no gap. If/when I use all the plates, the cutlery is warm to the touch, but certainly not too hot to handle.

It’s not a problem at all if the use is short term, grinr only one plate is used.

I too love my induction hob. So easy to clean!

I did burn a few things at first ..

keepingquiet Tue 02-Sept-25 19:01:43

When I had one there was a gap underneath, I presumed to keep air circulating.

I'm pretty sure we had a large drawer underneath but didn't keep cutlery in it.

I really miss it.

OldFrill Tue 02-Sept-25 18:56:12

Apparently the bottom of some hobs can get very hot. I have had a large Hotpoint hob with a cutlery drawer beneath it for around 5 years. No problem at all. The hob itself is incredibly quick to heat and cook, l used to love gas but no longer, induction is SO easy to clean.
