Anyone who can work out my passwords from stuff I post on Gransnet must have worked at Bletchley Park during the war.
Same here!ššš
I am probably being overly cautious and overthinking this, but having just had my main credit card hacked and used has focused my mind.
Each time we post our favourite book, old fashioned names in family, our favourite this that and the other, gives a would be hacker a helping hand into what may (or may not be) one of our passwords.
We celebrate our GN friends birthdays and anniversaryās on here daily, it is not beyond the realm of someone with dubious motives to put these little gems of information together and wham bam thank you gran they are in.
It is not my intention to frighten, just to be more careful.
Apologies if I sound like an old worry wort šø

I just think this thread should be reminding us to be very careful of what and how we post but not be scared of posting anything at all.
Thanks GG .
Iām an over-sharer, so will be more careful in future. š¬
Ohhh! It's such a shame that even our lovely Good Morning thread could potentially be manipulated by ruddy hackers. "Stop the World. I want to get off!" š¶
Yes, it's not lying, it's being economical with the truth for good reasons.
No, not over cautious at all. It is so easy for info to be reused by an unscrupulous body.
Hackers and scammers are at the absolute bottom of my pile because of the anxiety they inflict just by being there quite apart from when they do something.
My passwords are very random - good job I donāt have many or Iād never remember them.
If anyone can keep up with my continuous movements, transactions and various passwords, then they're cleverer than I am! My dog is my giveaway information on here, but he has two identical brothers close by, so no one could even be sure if it was me speaking anyway! š š š
PS as for being abroad, I have people staying at mine to feed the cat and look after the house, so watch out!
But a good reminder GrannyGravy13 even do.

Exactly what I was thinking! Iām trying to imagine the process, where someone decides they want to hack Daddima, so they need presumably to discover my name and address and possibly date of birth, then maybe my bank details before they get to even thinking about trawling through my social media posts to start guessing my password.
Seems a lot of bother to rob me of £34.50!
Just don't be taken in by Donny Osmond, who loves you and needs £50,000 to enable him to come to live with you. He'll give up everything for you but he's a bit short at the moment and needs cash upfront.
He'll have lovely long chats with you online but in fact he's AI Donny superimposed on another body.
Anything about my grandchildren is directly from my daughter posting on FB, so public domain already. Iām suitably vague about holidays.
One advantage of living a long way away from most I suppose.
Agree GG
I have have raised my eyebrows a few times.
It's not the posters but the lurkers that are the problem.
A few years ago a poster posted a photo of husbands gravestone, they then mentioned a holiday on another thread .
They have several times over the years have mentioned area they live in.
With Ai all theses details will add up
I have been on gransnet along time .
I know that posts stay on the Internet for ever and will show up on Google and now AI
I don't post often and never post photos of people
Ai is becoming more intelligent everyday and will probably be quite good at face recognition.

Yes you do, but over the years I have worked out where at least two GNetters live. I have never met them or even been to their towns, but it wouldnāt be too difficult for someone unscrupulous to find their names and other personal details.
Yes that is it exactly doodledog, they are not my stories, so i do try to be careful.
I've just been contacted by instagram as they think I have difficulty logging in.I don't use it but was someone trying to hack it?
Another thing to think about is people who search through noiseless. My dil was questioned by a friend of mine asking some quite personal questions. The friend asked to befriend her on Facebook but dil said she didn't use it.
Next time she looked at Facebook this persons profile came up as someone you might know so she had obviously searched for her.
Nosiness not noiseless!
Thatās the place Iāve put up several times when posters talk of hackers sitting in their bedrooms
I will try again to find the film ( true) where a wealthy businessman had his identity stolen. He had the money to employ a private internet detective. Thatās the place they went to.
What we have to accept is that we are never going to beat them. And now with AI itās going to get worse š±

I watched that. There lies the problem. That lady wasnāt old so I can only assume she had bad eyesight. Did she not notice that Donnie had no ears.
Another goody bag for the scammers: fan websites. Youāre halfway there already because they know youāll do anything for your idol.
Anyone who has researched family history knows how easy it is to find past family members.
I have managed through Google, company house ( gives addresses) and even planning records , with only a few clues.
Thaanksfor a timely reminder. I was much more guarded when I joined but have been more open as time passes
Itās horrible to go through life being suspicious of people but unfortunately those are the times we live in.
Regarding what posters reveal on here, a few years ago someone put a picture of a granddaughter and daughter on here, along with a story about a teacherās reaction to some work the child had done.
The child and possibly the teacher could have been identified.
Then there have been posters over the years who have created totally false lifestyles. Alpacas?
Although my Username gives a small clue to my background, it doesn't relate to where I now live and I'm deliberately vague about personal and family details. I wouldn't for example divulge my previous employment, specific ages or locations of family members or pets' names. Scammers are always trying to get one over on us, sadly.
One thing that always surprises me is that people often use their name in their email addresses.
I donāt, mine is a made up name , and when I receive an email that says āDear Plinkrttyplonk for example, I immediately know itās a fake.
We all use pseudonyms on GN. Any scammers wanting to use any onfo on GN first needs access to our reaal names.
Like Galaxy I do doctor the facts slightly, something about an aunt might actually be about a niece and things like that, nothing to falsify the point I am making but done partially to protect their anonymity. Not because I am afraid of scammers but because I am friends with some people on GN and know their real names and meet them and, when i first meet them, I do not know whether, they happen to know people that I know quite independently.
