Posting little details of our life on various threads…

I am probably being overly cautious and overthinking this, but having just had my main credit card hacked and used has focused my mind.

Each time we post our favourite book, old fashioned names in family, our favourite this that and the other, gives a would be hacker a helping hand into what may (or may not be) one of our passwords.

We celebrate our GN friends birthdays and anniversary’s on here daily, it is not beyond the realm of someone with dubious motives to put these little gems of information together and wham bam thank you gran they are in.

It is not my intention to frighten, just to be more careful.

Apologies if I sound like an old worry wort 🌸

I remember all that JenniferEccles and being terribly upset. I thought about it for days afterwards. The wonderful bucolic lifestyle that was served up to us daily reminded me of the food feasts and general largesse in the programme “The Darling Buds of May”. It was superbly crafted over many weeks to draw us in.

“Fool me once …” etc.

You may be interested to know I have just asked Gemini "What can you tell me about "notspaghetti"

First it talks about not being pasta - and then

It appears that "@notspaghetti" is a username on Gransnet, a UK-based forum for grandparents. While I can confirm the existence of this user, I cannot access or provide specific details about their posts or profile due to privacy and security reasons. Information on Gransnet is generally for members only, and sharing personal or private information from forums would be a violation of their terms of service and user privacy. Therefore, I cannot tell you what this user has posted, what their interests are, or any other personal details.
However, based on the platform, it is safe to assume that the user is a grandparent and participates in discussions on topics relevant to that community.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Thu 04-Sept-25 17:07:41

But from a photo you’d have to know which apartment number and the GN user’s real name. I think we can be pretty safe on here providing we change one or two smallish details and proceed with caution.

However, thank you GG13 for making some of us a little more aware. A timely reminder of over-sharing.

Yes the alpaca one was the most dreadfully deceitful one I can ever remember.

The poster built up a seemingly idyllic lifestyle on a farm in Norfolk or Suffolk.
She interacted with various posters and on the face of it was totally believable, until the ‘daughter’ came on early one morning to say her parents had been killed in a hit and run car crash the night before.

My suspicions were aroused about the speed at which the ‘daughter’ posted on here, within hours of her parents supposedly dying.
That was when I knew it was all a hoax.
What was the motive? Who knows.
Some sick character who thought it would be funny to fool a group of grandmothers presumably.

Some other oldies will remind us of this but, am I correctly recalling the lovely phoenix had some of her negative comments about her workplace forwarded to her employer

What kind of weird gets off on that kind of behaviour. Somehow identifying the area, the workplace then setting out to cause mayhem..

But what COULD you do with such information really?

Steal your identity I guess is the ultimate.

I watched a true documentary once, and that had happened to someone.
I cant remember many details.

Forget the kettle, a nice glass of a certain rose` would do nicely 👍

I thought wine would be better after I had posted.

Definitely GG13 🍷

Boz

The worst thread for this was "What can you see from your window".
One poster gave the area - the fact that the flat was over Sainburys and over-looking a railway station that was named.

Gobsmacked by so much info. I Googled and found the location within 2 minutes.
Frightening

I worked out quite quickly which town someone lived in, a few months ago.
She had written lots of info.

fancythat Thu 04-Sept-25 15:48:20

Good idea to post this.

Personally, it wouldnt help anyone in the slightest with mine.
Mine are several, and very random to say the least.
Put it this way, people laugh at mine!

I am not totally anonymous as I have met up with local GN members.

I am being more careful since my card was hacked, as these horrible people gain information from all sorts of areas.

I do remember a while ago there was a meet-up I thought of going to. A kindly Gransnetter offered a poster (new name) a lift but the new poster sounded very dodgy and it turned out to be a troll or, I thought, potentially a scammer, or perhaps someone who could alert another person about the Gransnetter being out and leaving her property empty.

Allira Thu 04-Sept-25 15:35:47

Yes, it's a timely reminder, GrannyGravy because scamming is big business.

Oreo Thu 04-Sept-25 15:33:34

It is upsetting GG13 and happened to me over 20 years ago. They had a great spending spree in London with it.
Took a while to sort out.

I think that might have been someone close to me.
So what?
Just ignore anything dodgy surely?

Do come round again soon but kindly lay off the choccy HobNobs, you only left one on the plate last time.🤬
Hobnobs? Surely cucumber sandwiches on Park Lane?! Can you not get a Fortnum's delivery?

BlueBelle Thu 04-Sept-25 15:19:26

I remember the farm story (weren’t her family killed in a road accident or similar)
I thought there was two around the same time usedtobeblonde but I could be wrong

I warned a new lady a couple of weeks ago who was posting photos of her grandson I explain why she shouldn’t and she was very annoyed and then posted another one just to ‘prove me wrong’ I guess , but then the thread was removed so maybe someone else reported it …lso silly

Oreo Thu 04-Sept-25 15:13:27

TMI I should leave this thread before I give the address and my phone number 😲

Oreo Thu 04-Sept-25 15:11:54

Either Brad or the rottweilers then🤔

Allira Thu 04-Sept-25 15:07:45

^Do come round again soon but kindly lay off the choccy HobNobs, you only left one on the plate last time.^🤬
I don't eat Hobnobs - it were Brad!

Allira Thu 04-Sept-25 15:06:42

Oreo

Ta Allira the butler looks like Brad Pitt, which isn’t surprising as it really is Brad Pitt, I hired him as he’s between films at the mo and needs a few bob.
Do come round again soon but kindly lay off the choccy HobNobs, you only left one on the plate last time.🤬

He could be an AI version of Brad Pitt, Oreo and be after your Park Lane mansion.
A clever scammer. I thought his ears looked a bit odd.
