I don’t know whether this one has already been posted but just in case…. It is obviously a scam as the offending product is not mentioned.

Thank you Greenfinch.

Never post on a link in a message purportedly from a firm you might have bought from.

I’ve just had a text allegedly from the DWP saying records show I haven’t registered for £300 to help with winter fuel. Asks for bank details so they can pay in
It’s very convincing including its address

Another scam

I've recently had an email purporting to be from a long standing friend.
I was asked to purchase an Amazon gift card.
The email was immediately reported as Spam. But it was very convincing.
So please beware.

Bellanonna Fri 05-Sept-25 13:41:54

Thanks Greenfinch. Tbh the https address looks a bit weird too

Delila Fri 05-Sept-25 13:43:10

Aldom, I recently received a similar email from an old friend, using her correct name and email address. Apart from the fact that I absolutely knew she wouldn’t be asking me for emergency financial help, especially in the form of Amazon gift vouchers, I hadn’t heard from her for many years. So the whole scenario was ludicrous. I reported it to [email protected].

I have just been in ‘conversation’ on Messenger following a friend request from someone who is already a friend. He was telling me about the CERF (Central Emergency Relief Fund), from which he had received £100,000, and adding a link for me to click!

The DWP one is definitely a scam, although it does like real.

But people who haven't previously received the winter fuel allowance do have to give those details to DWP to claim it.
Along with NI number.
So presumably people who are aged 66 or 67 by 15th September.
15th to 21st September is the qualifying week.
So try not to be in hospital or a care home or rehabilitation centre or prison
During that week.
I don't think the system for claiming has opened yet.
So perhaps yours was a scam.
Can you tell by the email address?

AGAA4 Fri 05-Sept-25 14:50:19

Amazon will automatically send a refund for problem goods. No need to apply.

NannyJan53 Fri 05-Sept-25 15:51:11

If you receive State Pension you do not have to claim the Winter Fuel Allowance. They have all your details already. I never claimed just received it when eligible.

It is the State Pension which you have to claim when reaching the state pension age.

Iam64 Fri 05-Sept-25 19:41:19

It’s definitely a scam, the email address included gov. And dep so very convincing. I asked google, that confirmed it’s a scam.

I had a request for help from one of my children who had damaged their phone. As it happens not one of them calls me ‘Mum’!

On the remote chance of one of the family receiving one of these text messages we have a word to sign off with if it’s genuine.

Elrel Fri 05-Sept-25 20:15:33

Petra, Good idea!

welbeck Mon 22-Sept-25 21:08:15

I b3lieve people who have not previously received the winter fuel allowance do have to claim it.
So those aged 66 or 67 on 15th Sept.

welbeck Mon 22-Sept-25 21:13:41

OK I've just checked it on DWP.
As you were.
It says you do not have to claim if in receipt of various benefits including state pension.
I heard incorrect advice on the radio from someone who should know the details.
