I can’t bear this announcer’s voice because he gabbles and runs his words together so I can’t understand him. He also annoys me by saying Ay for the indefinite article, as in ‘I had ay sandwich and ay coffee’, but that’s a personal dislike of mine.
Surely if you work in broadcasting you should speak clearly so listeners can follow what you’re saying?

We think he's ideal for University Challenge and like his pleasant manner towards the students, especially when they have been close to a correct answer.

vegansrock Thu 11-Sept-25 06:09:17

I’m team Amol. Love him.

I think he's great. He is so polite and supportive of the teams on University Challenge, unlike Jeremy Paxman who was always making scathing remarks and humiliating them.

My hearing isn't 100% now but I can always hear what he is saying. I don't think he is at all cocky.

University Challenge has been more exciting since he took over; so many close finishes.

I’ve stopped watching University Challenge because of him… nothing against him as a person, but he gabbles and says ‘you guys’ too many times!

I started watching UC again when Amol took over.
Paxman used to irritate me intensely.

I listen to the Today programme every morning on r4 and find the way Amol Rajan enunciates annoying because it starts off slow, one word at a time, before ending up gabbling. It’s sometimes hard to understand him and he hasn’t got any better over time. All the other presenters are fine. Sorry Amol.

He’s brilliant! Lively, funny, clever, and warm.

...and he's way too self-important for my taste!

Hear, hear NotSpaghetti, irritating little twit!! 🙄

He wouldn’t have been taught to say AY anything because that’s a recent fad, popular among politicians and Americans.
He may be delightful, gorgeous and lovable but he gabbles, slurs his words and I can’t understand what he’s saying.

Deedaa Fri 05-Sept-25 19:30:35

It does grate on me that he always says haitch instead of aitch, but apparently that's what he was taught.

NotSpaghetti

Yes, brash and rocky.
Used car salesman.

I couldn't agree more, NotSpaghetti.
He's cocky, slimy & far too big for his boots! I also don't like Aled Jones, for the very same reason. I do like Matt Baker though, & the slightly, chubby gruff one with the funny eastern - european surname.

Esmay Fri 05-Sept-25 11:00:11

I didn't like him at first -he seemed so impatient and arrogant . Now he's much nicer , but his pronunciation is weak .

Gummie Fri 05-Sept-25 10:34:36

I like him

NotSpaghetti Fri 05-Sept-25 10:17:54

I confess, Janeainsworth I switch it off if I hear him on it but do listen, at least for an hour or so, if he's not.

janeainsworth Fri 05-Sept-25 07:58:28

Amol Rajan was the reason I stopped listening to the Today programme.
I decided it was bad for my health to get so angry so early in the morning.
I messaged the Beeb about his unclear diction and his use of hard A’s for the indefinite article, but got no response.
They seem to have a policy of encouraging regional accents (Chris Mason is another) but I think this is divisive more than inclusive. Some accents (Birmingham, Geordie, West Country) are never promoted.

NotSpaghetti Fri 05-Sept-25 07:48:39

Or maybe *cocky!

I can't bear him either Ilovedogs with his wordy, puffy, self importance.
Just go away and puff up off air.

Never gives other people a chance to answer during conversations either.
He apologises for interrupting and continues plowing on with his endless monologues.
Nearly everything he asks the person interviewed is complicated, verbose and winding. First you need to untangle the salient points of the question!

I have never seen him on TV - my thoughts about him are all radio based.

keepingquiet Fri 05-Sept-25 00:27:33

I really like him on UC too- it does seem to be more exciting and entertaining that it used to be.

He has also done some excellent interviewing. I don't find him the least difficult to understand.

Gin Fri 05-Sept-25 00:10:16

I like him. On the Today programme (Radio4) he is less confrontational than some of the older presenters.

He is very good at relaxing contestants on UC or people he interviews. He does gabble at times but I find him comprehensible.

Flippinheck, you are so right about the BBC overseas broadcasting that is on during the night on 4. I find many of the presenters very difficult to understand. It is good for sending me to sleep as the programmes are often very boring. The funding has been cutback so much that now, what used to be a flagship of excellence produces very, very inferior content.

Iam64 Thu 04-Sept-25 20:49:49

I only know him on radio 4 6-9 am
I like him

Oldbat1 Thu 04-Sept-25 20:44:44

He does a regular presenting stint on Radio 4 in the morning from 6am until 9am. He is guilty of speaking very quickly but I think he is trying to slow down.

Jamie Thu 04-Sept-25 19:22:34

I have given over watching as I can't always catch what he says as he goes to fast and speaks softly. It annoyed me that if I answered something that the team didn't know I couldn't find out if I was right or what the answer was as he just mumbled it quickly. He dresses very smartly though.
