And they will keep on coming. Shabana Mahmood has her work cut out.

Allira obviously completely off topic, but the way resident doctors are treated is pretty disgraceful, it adds huge stress to what is already a difficult job and with all the constant moving around is very damaging to relationships of every kind. It's no wonder doctors have become militant and want better pay. Thankfully DD is coming to the end of her training, passed all the relevant exams and the next step is a consultancy post. There's a shortage in her specialism but she won't rush into it as the role comes with even more stress and she'd like to see if she can start a family before she's too old!

J52 thanks for your post, the government has made a good start to sorting this out but it never gets reported!

It's obvious that France is limited in what it can do to stop the boats. Even Macron says so. Personally I'd rather France was paid on productivity, give us results first then we'll pay, but that's another issue.

Don't expect much from France at the moment. They're far too busy with a government that's about to collapse today, and Macron desperately looking for someone to replace PM François Bayrou. (French lunchtime news) - worthy of a new thread?

It's disheartening, foxie48
We need these young people.
I know two who have just emigrated.

Allira When I read some of the venomous posts when doctors pay/strikes have been posted, I'm tempted to suggest to DD that she goes to work where she will be appreciated but selfishly I want her to stay here (at least until I'm dead!).

Anyway back to topic, yes France seems to have even more problems than we do. In fact look at most European countries and there's the same problems facing them that we have. With regard to refugees, try looking at the stats for countries like Turkey, Iran, Bangladesh, Colombia, Lebanon, much poorer countries who are taking in much greater numbers of refugees than we do. Most refugees escape over the border because they hope to go home at some point in the future.

It's time the Government starting 'talking up' their successes.
Thanks J52

These posts are getting more and more unpleasant. Why are we unable to discuss the original post in a calm and reasonable manner?
Imo it was a simple statement of fact, I have no recollection of any other posts by the same person that could lead to some of the comments here.

Doing that might help to remove focus on what they haven’t done, or the impact on those who feel they have been badly affected, when they were hoping for better after the last government.

We are getting better

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Mon 08-Sept-25 13:39:11

France isn’t though …

France’s efforts to stop the migrant boats are dysfunctional in the face of extreme violence orchestrated by people-smuggling gangs, a policing chief has admitted.

Marc Alegre, who represents officers in Calais and Dunkirk, said efforts by police and gendarmes were disjointed, plagued by a lack of training, faced shortages of recruits and spent British money on the wrong type of equipment.

He said his Unité police union was pushing for the French government to set up dedicated police units to specialise in tackling immigration and taking on the people smugglers so that they could reverse the record level of migrant small-boat crossings this year.

My medic dd is in a training post. She’s one of very few of her cohort who’ve been fortunate enough to get into training. Many of her peers have either left medicine altogether or they’ve gone abroad because they can’t jobs in the UK.

As Foxie refers, there are currently 20,000 unemployed UK-trained young doctors in this country. Some have no work at all, some work in Costa/Aldi, some have gone to jobs outside medicine and many are working abroad. She knows of entire friendship groups who’ve left, four or five doctors who emigrate together. Some are now settling down with buying houses and starting families and won’t be coming back.

Isn't the other way to look at this none arrived in the previous week?

I think that was due to weather conditions in the channel

Yes, I said this from experience earlier in the thread! 🌊 🤢

None travel for a few days, then it's double the number when the sea calms.

escaped Mon 08-Sept-25 14:13:59

FGT is right at 13.39. There's no point seeing all this in isolation from our side of The Channel in the UK. Come to France, listen to them talking about the challenges, the lack of money and the lack of personnel available to police the area and to make any difference.

theworriedwell Mon 08-Sept-25 14:17:45

Right GrannyGravy you could just seasiky say the figures were high on that day due to weather conditions.

I think quoting one without the other is disingenuous, none arrived for seven days - no problem. 1027 arrived in one day - big problem. Neither is balanced is it and we know some people just read headlines so they probably think 1027 or similar are arriving every day.

Er no .... in this instance, FGT's headline clearly stated in the last 24 hours, not daily.
Since S Mahmood took over, in effect from last Friday.

I have just googled

As of 07/09/2025 small boats crossing the channel has exceeded 30,000 reaching 30,100 after a single day total of 1,097 migrants in 17 boats. This figure represents a record breaking pace, with the 30,000 mark being reached must earlier than previous years

All main stream news outlets have been leading with this story.

There is nothing wrong with the OP, it is factually correct.

Sorry, I had to laugh, seasiky. 😆

Thankfully I've recovered from my crossing, and back into the wine and nice French foods!

woodenspoon Mon 08-Sept-25 14:41:21

30,000 too many. It’s unacceptable to most right minded people. We will see if this new Home Secretary can walk the walk. She talks a good game. No visas for countries who refuse to take them back, she says. Time will tell.

Well the French PM has lost the vote of confidence. He'll be gone tomorrow. Goodness knows who Macron will call on now. What a meltdown!

A seemingly never ending list of hopeless Home Secretaries. Rinse and repeat.
This lovely country has been ruined by their inability to stop and return those who have no right to live here.

Spot on.

Well Rome wasn’t built in a day. It does show progress, though obviously we are a long way from a humane solution.
